Over my 80 plus years I have been fortunate to have travelled many places. My last trip to Churchill with lazy Bear Lodge ranks right at the top of the list. The first day there we saw Belugas, Polar Bears and the Northern Lights. Jackpot!!!! I have mobility issues and use a walker. The young men who drove the tour buses, ushered us around activities, watched for our safety were teriffic. Not only were they very professional and competent they were kind and considerate. They helped me numerous times, on and off buses, Zodiacs, boats and Tundra vehicles. The best part ? they made it fun.
The staff at the lodge were equally thoughtful and helpful. It was a great, probably, final trip for me. Lois Perkins

My wife and I were amazed at how organized the Lazybear lodge was. We saw polar bear, beluga whales, northern lights, kayaked with whales, auga-glided with whales, had wonderful meals and a very clean room. The kayaks, zodiacs, boats, busses, vans, tundra crawlers and lodge were 1st rate.
We especially liked our guide Adrian and the barista named Paige.

Hubby and I had an amazing trip to Churchill on an Alexander and Roberts trip (with Lazy Bear Expeditions). A different sort of trip for us, as we wanted to experience the polar bears and beluga whales, as well as a different part of the world.
Our guide Deacon is the quintessential Renaissance man - extremely knowledgeable, personable young man. Who truly loves every aspect of his job and his hometown, it truly shows! Together with our driver Ryan (this guy was a hoot!) they guided us on some amazing adventures.
Our boat tour of Hudson Bay with Lazy Bear Expeditions was incredible - we saw several polar bears roaming the shores, a couple lazily swimming in the water, what fun. They were able to take us close enough to get some great shots and not disturb the bears. Several pods of beluga whales which was interesting (but nowhere near as exciting as when we saw them on the upcoming aqua glide tour). Really nice day, and sidenote - their hot chocolate on board is made with milk and whipped cream, not a packet, must have! ;-)
We next spent the next morning with Dave Daley and Wapusk Adventures - learned about dog sledding, had an opportunity to go on a dog sled run through the woods (those dogs are INCREDIBLE!!!!) and heard stories about the Hudson Bay Dog Quest sled race. I must admit, I have the utmost admiration for Dave, his family and their commitment to their dogs and their people. This was well worth the trip and not to be missed.
Then we went on to the aqua glide. I was a bit hesitant about this one so I chose to just ride in the zodiac, and let hubby have the fun. We had a group of 8 of us on this zodiac, and towed a large mat where 2 people would lie face down with goggles on, to look in the water and see the belugas up close. Wet suits were provided. Deacon found us a spot and advised us to sing (no kidding!) because belugas are curious want to check you out. Higher pitched the better. He was not kidding - the group in the zodiac would be singing (we resorted to actual high pitch tones which were atrocious but they worked) when suddenly we had pods of belugas swimming right next to us. Different experience from being on a boat, because in this zodiac they are RIGHT NEXT TO YOU. SO - MUCH - FUN!!!
Lazy Bear Lodge is beautiful, quaint. Rooms are small, but clean and well kept. Staff was genuinely nice and very helpful. We took a zodiac out to the fort, hit a wave and hubby and I were drenched - as in it looked like we took a shower with our clothes on. One of the housekeepers took all of our clothes and dried and folded them so we did not have to travel with sopping wet clothes. Really nice, and all because she noticed us when we returned from the trip.
I thought the food at Lazy Bear was exceptionally good - the elk in particular was done so well, not gamey at all. Great menu selection. Prices are really high - I am really impressed that the people who live out this way are able to handle these prices. But when you consider that the only way you can access the town is via rail or airway it all makes sense.
If you are considering a trip of this sort I would highly recommend Lazy Bear Expeditions to make it come true. Thanks to Deacon, Ryan and the entire Lazy Bear staff for a wonderful time!

We went on the Polar Bears and Belugas tour. Tour guides and staff at the lodge were all very friendly, pleasant and helpful. The food at the restaurant was very good at lunch and dinner and on an evening when we came back late from a tour they kept it open for us after regular closing time. Breakfast was a buffet. Rooms at the lodge are quite small with only a small desk and chair for furniture, and all have two double beds (no other options available).

The tours were generally well organized except for one glitch where 2 tours were scheduled too close together without letting us know. Our tours as a whole spent more time on belugas than looking for bears, which was a bit disappointing for us. We did see 6 bears on two of the tours, 2 of which were asleep among the rocks. The guides were very good at finding them and pointing them out. Our guide did say that they are solitary and range over a wide area, and we can generally expect to see 1 or two on the coast boat tour or the tundra tour, so seeing 6 was a good experience. We saw hundreds of belugas on the boat and zodiac tours, often quite close to us.

The only tour that did not go as well as expected was the Aquaglide tour, which is an additional large cost. The people taking their turn before us saw several groups of belugas, we only saw one group up close. The problem is that this tour is in the Churchill River, which is very murky, with very poor visibility. Belugas more than 3-4 feet away are just blurry shapes. Only one passed about 1-2 feet in front of us and could be clearly seen. No one told us this until we were already on the tour. From our experience I don't think I can recommend it.

We did get lucky and had a clear sky on two of the nights and saw amazing displays of the Aurora Borealis. On one of the nights a guide took us on a bus out of town to a very dark area which made viewing ideal. You can place your name on a list at the front desk and they will notify you (wake you up) when the aurora is visible.

Overall we were very happy with the trip and the experience. My only caution is to limit one's expectation on how many bears you're likely to see, even if they tell you that there are more bears around than people living in Churchill.

Churchill is remote. This is probably the nicest place to stay in Churchill and this guided trips we had were excellent. We had multiple experiences seeing polar bears and beluga whales on a bus, in zodiacs, kayaking, and in the arctic crawler. We saw many other animals too. The staff is helpful and informative. The log lodge is charmingly rustic. Rooms are clean and small. Food is well intentioned- you are not coming to Churchill for gourmet dining. An amazing experience.

How do you describe one of the most amazing places, fantastic!!! Lazy Bear Expeditions and Lazy Bear Lodge exceeded our expectations. Sue and the entire team made this a one-of- kind experience. The guides, kayaking, aqua gliding, food, and accommodations were top notch. On the final day we had the mama polar bear and her cub come to say good-bye. This is a beautiful place to see wildlife and experience some of the nicest people on the planet. Well done Lazy Bear!!!

I, along with a friend attended the Lazy Bear Polar Bear Tour. We went from November 10 - 16, 2022. We selected Lazy Bear because they were somewhat all inclusive. Pre-night in Manitoba, transport to airport for flight to Churchill, accommodations at the Lazy Bear Lodge in Churchill, a few meals, tours, and a return flight to Churchill with a final night in Winnipeg. We had our own rooms, as we required and our own bathroom. (not always the case with all tours)
As far as an organization, they were great. Tour guides were fantastic, they worked very hard, always felt safe. The accommodations were "good", food was ok. Overall, the people who work for Lazy Bear are really terrific.

As with any wildlife tour, you never know what you are going to see. We never saw a moving polar bear up close. We saw "binocular bears" and we saw a video of a polar bear from taken by a patron of our sister group, in another vehicle.

Binoculars were not provided, you may want to bring them.

Dog sledding ride was absolutely fantastic!

Not allowed off of arctic buggy, as most all land travel requires a "bear guard".

Our guides brought us into town to buy things, which we really appreciated. Not only to pick up that bottle of wine, but to support the local "chatchka" store.

I would research what you are looking to do and the time of year that serves you.
There were several flights heading north of Churchill that provided tours as well.

Saw Polar Bears in their natural habitat. Lazy Bear handled EVERYTHING, All good - no complaints - not one. Worth every penny we paid for the trip. "You" have to remember that you are going to a wilderness area. Anything and Everything can go wrong - max out the trip insurance and then leave the rest to Nature and Lazy Bear.
Everything went well for us - I honestly couldn't come up with a whine or complaint if I tried. This company is managed by professionals and the staff are all very fine service oriented people. We just relaxed and enjoyed ourselves. I am going to start saving for the Beluga adventure next.

My adult daughter went with me on my bucket list adventure to northern Manitoba to see polar bears. We went in mid October and the weather was turning cold. We traveled with owner/operator Lazy Bear Expeditions who handled our entire trip from hotels in Winnipeg, charter flights to and from Churchill and our lodging, meals and awesome bears viewing excursions in Churchill. Everything was organized and well run, but still relaxed. Lazy Bear was easy to work with in the reservation process and very prompt to respond when I had a question. It was easy to get Sue and the reservation team on the phone if I needed more than an email response. All the Lazy bear personnel were so nice, knowledgeable and helpful. We stayed at Lazy Bear Lodge in Churchill, which is a very cool lodge hand built by the owner with a great on site restaurant. Our non-polar bear chasing adventures included touring the local area's historic fur trading forts, Polar Bear Jail and a pretty cool dog sledding experience. The polar bear viewing excursions on the tundra in the tundra buggies were awesome! The Tundra buggies were warm, comfortable and everyone had seats with great views and an outside deck to get a better view and pictures. And we saw POLAR BEARS everyday! They are soooo cool and huge and seemed to totally ignore us. It was a great experience.
