Overview
More
The Torrs Hydro is located on the site of Torr Mill, a textile mill built in 1790 which was destroyed in a fire in 1912. The turbine actually sits in location of the original mill pit, where the water wheel would have been sited. Some of the original stones from the mill pit now line the surroundings of the turbine. The scheme has been built using local stone and is designed to blend into its post-industrial location. Careful landscaping and the provision of two picnic tables have enhanced the amenity of the site.Torrs Hydro works very closely with the Environment Agency, the guardian of the nation's rivers. They funded and own the fish pass incorporated into the scheme to allow upstream access for migratory fish. This will help the salmon which now enter the Mersey, downstream of the Goyt, access more spawning grounds. The slow rotating nature of the turbine itself is inherently fish friendly. There is no need to screen fish as they can pass through the turbine unharmed.Torrs Hydro is located in the Torrs Riverside Park in New Mills, Derbyshire. This amazing gorge is right underneath the town centre and is easily accessible by train to New Mills Newtown or Central stations, bus or car.Enter the Torrs Riverside Park from The Rock Tavern (Wirksmoor Road, Newtown), from New Mills Central station via the Millenium Walkway, from Hurst Lea Road, via steps from the town centre at the bus station or Rock St, from Hyde Bank Road and from Church Road adjacent to the entance to the Co-Op Car Park (Endsor Way on the map). There are great views of the Hydro scheme from the Union Road and Church Road bridges over the gorge. There are picnic tables close by to the Hydro and cafes and pubs in the town directly above the gorge. Regular Open days to see behind the scenes of the Hydro and fish pass will give you an insight to the countries first community owned and managed Hydro - check the website or torrs hydro blog for further details.

Came for an explore here while killing time before a train from New Mills, worth a visit to see it if you can as there is lots of information on boards telling you about it and the history of the area too. The only downside...More

Walking through the Torrs Gorge, came across the Torrs Hydro project generating electricity for local use using a modern screw, set in a 200 year old working water mill gorge. Old meets new technology. Very interesting.

Visited the Hydro as part of doing the bridges trail walk... Was unexpected but on getting closer was worth seeing for the engineering alone... It surprised us to see the Hydro was generating 58kw of electricity at the time purely from the flow of the...More

This has to be our favourite walk, the Park Under The Town is awesome, well worth a visit . There are picnic benches and the shops are at the top.of the hill. Walk down towards the railway viaduct and say hello to the Llama.

We loved this. It's an inspiring community project. It had been raining when we went and the Hydro was generating 50kw/h - free and green. Enough to power 50+ homes. We liked the fact that they were using the power in the water 100+ years...More

Set just off the main road in New Mills, this former wreck has come back to beauty with panache. It can form part of a lovely walk or just be home to a picnic. It's definitely worth a quick visit if you're in the area.

As far as I can see the whole idea of generating electricity from a water powered Archemdes Screw was a failure from the start! It has cost thousands of pounds with shareholder's expecting to get a return but they never will. Surely a better project...More

One of the more modern but equally fascinating aspects of the Torrs Riverside Park in New Mills. Just a short well signposted walk from New Mills Central rail station. The Hydro seemed to be generating a constant 37Kw while we were there at the weekend....More

A sweet small reverse archimedes screw the powers the local co-op. It is lovely to see it up close, and to see how proud the locals are of it.
