A really lovely old building, founded by Charlemagne and still just about an active convent. The very old frescoes are beautiful, although I understand the very oldest have been removed to a museum elsewhere in Switzerland. The old convent rooms are fascinating and give a...More

This place seems to be founded back in 775 and we were disappointed by the poor and scarce presentation in the museum. The way from Zug to Mustair is extremely scenic though but the monastery itself is not worth it.

We took trains and buses from Guarda Village through the Swiss National Park to Val Mustair. As we arrived at the church, the nuns were singing and it filled the fresco-filled room with a rich peace. We explored the whole site...the flower gardens, the cemetary...More

This little convent dates back almost a thousand years and was built right on the border between Switzerland and Italy. Inside there are the oldest and the largest Carolingian frescoes in the whole of Europe An amazing sight!

The Abbey of Saint John is an ancient Benedictine monastery in the Swiss village of Müstair, in the Canton of Graubünden. By reason of its exceptionally well-preserved heritage of Carolingian art, it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983.

We took this in following local advice en route to Italy - The very old painting are truly wonderful. A "must come back to this place" place!

We opted for a 1.5 hour guided tour (in German) of the museum. The guide was erudite, witty and enthusiastic resulting in a tour that was very interesting and well worth the money.

The church is really interesting and the monastery carefully presented. Overall a very nice exhibition and mixture of centuries of construction. Worth a trip not only because of the beauty of the trip but also this destination.

The church itself is perfectly beautiful and even the cemetery worth visiting, but what really stands out is the museum and gift shop. I came away with 2 booklets on the history of this community and its place in the valley, both physical and spiritual. Sometimes in...More
