My sons wanted to climb the dunes. My daughter and I thought we would at least walk over to them. It was very hot unless there was a lucky break of a cloud floating over. The sand is hot and deep. It is tough to...More

Our National Parks protect beautiful places and this one is so special. Worth it to hike out into the dunes whether you just go a little ways or to the highest one and beyond! Let your inner kid out and have fun running and jumping...More

There are no trails among the dunes. There are point of interest that change every few weeks, but there is no established trail. That's one of the best parts about GSD NP, you are free to make your own trail to wherever you want on...More

Amazing place - one would not think of sand dunes in the middle of Colorado - never been to the Sahara, but I could imagine a slice of the Saharan sand dunes here! No "trails" to follow as we hiked up to the top -...More

Come visit some of the sand dunes in this unlikely place. Startling in their vast starkness, but very beautiful at the same time.

My husband and I hiked up to the High Dune on the Front Range. He described it as hiking up the down escalator! :-) With every step we slid back a half-step. It was a lot of effort and it took a while, but totally...More

We added this to our Outdoor sporting trip to CO and UT this summer. We were trying to hit all the possible outdoor sports in a 10 day window. We had never Sand Boarded but have Snowboarded for several years. We rented the Sand Boards...More

Between the altitude and trying to carry out two kids up the dunes, we only made it about halfway!! Loved it though! Next time I'm in Colorado I want to come again!

I would also recommend a stop at Creede Colorado, the valley approaching it is absolutely beautiful, and Creede is definitely unique.

We stayed in Alamosa the night before we went to great sand dunes. The town doesn't have much to see but it made for a much shorter drive and a longer day available at the park and we were glad for that.
