Stumbled upon this gallery during a coastal walk. The art is out of this world. Incredible. James was welcoming and it was great to see his studio. What a talent.

Won’t be back.

The artwork is okay but it’s far to pricey. There is not much to see here so I convince everyone not to come.

James is a renowned international Landscape painter who has work in private and public collections throughout the world. We are sorry that you failed to appreciate his work and that it was not affordable for you.

Rhue art gallery
Sep 2018 • Family
Having heard this gallery recommended as a place to visit, on my NC500 app, we called in to have a look, as the weather was pretty grim. It was well worth a visit. We met and chatted to the artist, James Hawkins, whose work is pretty awesome, and ended up coming away with a beautiful print of one of his paintings. A special souvenir of our NC500 trip.

A Must See
Aug 2018 • Couples
We had discovered the website before visiting and made sure we stopped by and we were blown away by James Hawkins’ dynamic work! He is truly talented and captures the majesty of the area perfectly. This is a high compliment coming from a photographer (me) who finds it a challenge to capture a region that is so dramatic and awe-inspiring. Absolutely beautiful work and our purchases were the highlight of our trip in being able to bring a piece of northwest Scotland home. Absolutely stop in!

Lovely space and wonderful pieces. We bought a print (and would have bought an original if the budget had gone that far!)

Great to have access to a real artist!

It’s a must to visit this studio and gallery, whether or not you like the paintings, the serious nature of the well established studio gives a great insight into an artists world. We thoroughly enjoyed this visit, just a shame we didn’t meet the artist himself. I think you normally would. There is also a separate gallery and we viewed a wonderful exhibition of metal animal Sculptures. A great wee hidden gem this place is well worth a visit. A single track road but very easy to get to.

Superb art in lovely surroundings
Nov 2017 • Couples
We are so glad we have at last visited this wonderful gallery - a long overdue visit as we have been to Ullapool regularly over the past few years. We were delighted to meet the host artist James Hawkins who showed us his collection and also that of French artst Dominique Gais. Both exhibitions are absolutely superb. James is one of the best contemporary landscape painters in Scotland and Dominique's work is inspired by the Rhue landscapes. We also enjoyed the incredibly fine scultures of Helen Denerley. The Galleries are small but exquisite and we recommend anyone interested in local art at its best to visit. Aside from originals which would be a serious but very worthwhile investment, you will find high quality prints on sale. We look forward very much to returning here on our next visit to Ullapool in the spring of next year. If you are thinking of going in the winter season, a phone call before arriving is agood idea as the Gallery will be opened for you. During the summer season it has regular opening hours.

Inspirational art
Oct 2017 • Couples
With a bit of time to spare while travelling the NC500, but weather being particularly Scottish, we looked for something to do indoors rather than simply admiring the scenery on route to our next campsite. We recognise the style of Helen Denerley's sculptures (having seen a fine sheep sculpture outside a restaurant not too far away) and thought it would be fun to see more.

When we arrived, a lovely friendly lady met us - turned out that she's a friend of the owner/artist James Hawkins, house/gallery-sitting while he's away working on a commission.

James Hawkins' paintings fair take your breath away. Although very brightly coloured, they have a calmness from his handling of mirror flat pools of water, reflecting surrounding mountain - view the photos the artist has provided here. The original oils will be beyond the pocket of many passers by, but the high quality prints are well worth consideration.

There's actually two gallery spaces (one for James and one for an invited artist, currently a water-colourist), plus metal sculptures outside.

Friendly private artists studio
Sep 2017
A private studio of artwork by James Hawkins an acclaimed artist, we have passed by this place often, but finally made it to look in. His work is unusual and unique in 3 dimensional textural and colourful works inspired by the local landscapes. We had a friendly welcome with our kids and were invited to look "behind the scenes" into the studio. We didn't buy, but well worth visiting - if you really like one of the pieces you might well be tempted!

During the summer of 2017 a separate exhibition by Kevin Percival was open at the studio showing a photographic landscape of the people and places on Tanera Mor the well known island of the Summer Isles off Achitibuie, also outstanding.
