We were taken to this castle by Shearings (as part of the holiday). It is more a stately home than a castle, but nevertheless it is a beautiful place to visit. It seems it was a castle for defence at one time, but it has...More

A fascinating castle with links to some of the most important periods in Scottish history. The guides present throughout the building were well-informed, friendly and helpful. The accounts of the lives of the Maitland and Maitland-Carew families were interesting and educational. A very worthwhile visit.

Thirlestane has a real sense of history; the architectural details such as the remarkably ornate plasterwork, some of the furniture, the historical portraits and the old kitchen and servants details span the centuries. At the same time, it also gives the impression that it is...More

Thank you for your very kind review. We are glad you enjoyed your visit and found lots of interesting things to look at. Life as a servant in the castle was certainly a different world to what we're used to now.

Beautifully kept with many interesting features especially the ornate ceilings and some of the doors. Staff were on hand to explain the history of the Castle and answer any questions but were equally happy to let us wander and discover for ourselves.
