On the last Friday of the month you can go to the Government House for High Tea at no cost. We were blessed to be in Nassau on that Friday so attended. A program called People to People puts on a splendid party with all the best of the Bahamas intertwined in the event. We were seated with Lady Joan Foulks, the wife of Deputy to the Governor, General Sir Arthur Foulks, who was the hostess. What an honor! A couple of visitors from Germany and a couple from Toronto, Canada completed our table, which was an international delight. The food was perfect with sandwiches, fruits and local island cakes. There was a band with the best floutist I've ever heard. We were entertained with a fashion show with women from a local school modeling clothing from a local store. When leaving, two nassau businesses were highlighted that day, so you could buy straw goods or jewelry to 'pay' for your experience. The tea incorporated all the highlights of Nassau and was the best goodbye we could have wanted since we went back to plain old Ohio the next day. The only glitch was that the famous Bahamas Police Marching Band was to perform but unfortunately one of their own had passed, and were at the funeral. The Tea is where you should go, if you are trying to enjoy and learn about Nassau, and want to skip the tourist traps.

Great to walk around and see the history of Nassau, very friendly people, just a taxi ride away from our hotel, and a short walk into the town

We just walked by here when visiting from a cruise port. Interesting that government building in Nassau are pink. You can't go inside but it's nice to just take a picture!

My husband, I and kids age 10 and 7 explored Nassau on foot. We first walked to Queen's Staircase at 8 am, not hot, not crowded. Take Bay St, then Elizabeth St and when it ends that's the beginning of the Queen's Staircase, just keep walking past the road end/metal barricade. Walk is slightly uphill there and downhill back (bring water and don't complain). I loved the old world charm, it's exactly what expected, old place with history. It was cool, shady, with benches to rest and enjoy. I loved everything about it. Then we went upstairs to Fort Fincastle, paid $1 a person, guide was excellent, funny, took our pics, I tipped him, awesome views, we saw a curly-tailed lizard (very cool). Market people there were not pushy, I shopped there (inspect what you buy to make sure it's not broken/damaged). We walked wright back down the Staircase and back the way we came to Bay St. Passed the Government House and other cool buildings. Band was playing island music my daughter enjoyed. I felt safe, there were many police officers and we stayed only on the major street.

I found out about the high tea through people to people. I was a wonderful expereince I found out a great deal about the country and had the opportunity to discuss the fact that for the first time in the countries history they had more than two parties running in the election. The models were very beautiful and although some were very young did a great job. I had a great time and would encourage anyone visiting when this opportunity is available to make reservations and attend.

Most of the pictures here are of The House of Assembly where government business takes place. There is a statue of Queen Victoria in front of it. There are a couple of pictures in the "visitor pictures" section of another pink house with a statue of a man standing on the steps, that is Government House and the statue is Christopher Columbus. This is where the Governor General resides. It is located on Shirley Street and Blue Hill.

Can't imagine a government house being pink - but that is, however, the Bahamas! It's really neat to go by and worth stopping for some photos. Across the street is Parliment Square where you can run around if you like (there is a large open area) or enjoy a sit in the shade on a nearby bench. Enjoy the lush greenery and beautiful flowers planted nearby as well, to take in this neat stop! And the best part, it's FREE!

The Government House looked really nice. Honestly speaking, Nassau was a kind of disappointing for me. We just stopped here for a while as part of our daily trip.

NOt to be confused with Parliament House, was a pretty neat experience. WHile the Government House was not offering any kind of tours (at least on the day we visited), we did get to witness the rehearsal for the changing of the guard; that in itself was worth the visit and something I am very glad my young son was able to witness. I hope to visit again.

It's free, it's better than the shopping strip, it has a ton of culture. We explored the front and back!
