My husband and I went on the Munchies in Macao tour with Mike. He's very easy to communicate with (contact him through Facebook or WhatsApp). He will give you a scheduled time to pick you up and take you on a very small and personal tour. There were only 4 of us on the tour which was great. We got to ask questions and get all the time we wanted. We started the day by going to the barrio and visiting with a family there that Mike knows. The kids were so friendly and lovely. We got to see the "real" Dominican Republic during this part of the tour. The family we met with had almost nothing, but they were just happy to interact with us and show us how they lived. We went to a local private school and the kids were so friendly! They wanted to pose for photographs and say hello and get hugs from all of us. After this we went to a cigar factory where my husband got to roll his own cogar and we witnessed the process of how a cigar gets made. Mike is a wealth of knowledge on the subject. We also got to eat chocolate and taste rum. All of these things came home with us! After this part of the tour we went to Playa Macao, but we went to a very isolated part of the beach where we ate an incredible lunch made by "mom". There is no menu, because you choose your lunch from whatever they have caught that day. We had red snapper and it was incredible. Mike is incredibly personale and knows his stuff, as he has lived in the DR for many years. My husband and I are thinking about moving there at some point and he answered all of our questions about where to look and how to move there. I would absolutely do this tour again and will bring school supplies for the kids next time.

My family of four including two kids aged 5 and 9 took the Munchies in Macao tour with Mike on 7/31/21. First a little background…my wife and I took Mikes tour 11 years ago on our honeymoon in Punta Cana. It left such an impression on us that we said when we had kids and came back to Punta Cana, it would be a priority to take them on the tour. Now about the tour... Mike picked us up at the scheduled time in the resort lobby with our driver Jordan. First, we headed to the Hoyo to get a look into the area that many people in Bavaro and Punta Cana call home and visit with some of the locals. This was truly an eye-opening experience for all of us. We got the chance to see the school that Mike has supported for many years and drop off some school supplies for the students. After that we headed to a cigar factory to see cigars being rolled. Mike is a wealth of knowledge on the cigar making process and does a great job of explaining what goes into making a cigar. This location also produces chocolate and sells rum and jewelry. It is a great place to get all your souvenirs while learning about the products at the same time. The final stop of the day was Macao beach for some relaxation and an outstanding lunch of fresh fish or lobster, plantains, rice and beans. This was probably my favorite meal of the trip! I would highly recommend Mike’s tour to get a real look at Dominican life outside of the resorts and have a lot of fun doing it. We stayed at a wonderful resort, but our day with Mike was the highlight of our trip!

Excellent and well worth the money. Mike was personable and it was amazing to connect with a fellow Canadian. This trip will show you a side of the Dominican that takes you away from the resort.

My wife and I have been to every Caribbean island and have done dozens of excursions, including in the Dominican Republic. The Higuey excursion with Punta Cana Mike is hands down my favorite excursion we've ever done on any island. Mike is Canadian and we are American, so there was no obvious language barrier between us. He was able to explain things, answer questions, and dictate the tour with ease of understanding for us. He picked us up from our resort in Cap Cana in his air conditioned car and off we went. We went to several cities including Hoyo de Friusa, La Saba, Punta Cana, Higuey and probably somewhere else. We first stopped at a rum/cigar/chocolate place which was nice. It was modern and very relaxing. It helped we were with Mike and beat the tour busses there. When we arrived, it was just us. First we sampled some chocolate and got a short lesson on cocao and the making of chocolate. This was very good chocolate and we ended up purchasing some. Afterward, we walked over to the cigar factory where we got to see some people making cigars which was pretty neat. We saw the process all the way through, which was really cool. After that, we went to the rum store where we got several samples. We ended up buying 2 bottles here. This was a nice facility and I would recommend it. However I would recommend taking bug spay as I got eaten up by mosquitos here. After we left the rum/cigar/chocolate facility, we went to another town where we would visit a local store. There we got to see the store, how it's run, and the people in the complex. Behind the store were their houses. It was very eye opening. However the people were amazing and so friendly While here we walked down to a local school. There we saw how the school operated, met the kids and teachers. The kids here were amazing and so friendly. We did give a monetary donation to the school though it was not asked for. *IF YOU GO ON THIS TOUR, PLEASE BRING SCHOOL SUPPLIES!! Mike has this on his website but I missed it.** After we left the school, we went into Higuey where we would stop at the car wash. Here we got to play a few rounds of Dominos with Hector. I have never touched a Domino in my life neither had my wife. However we caught on really fast and it was super fun. This is a stop we loved. After we left playing Domino's with Hector, we went over to Basílica Catedral Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia which is a pretty major church in the area. This was very pretty inside looking from the door. We could not go in however because my wifes shorts did not cover her knees. We still got to peep in and get a picture. Once we left the church, we went to the market where the locals shop. There is nothing to buy here from a tourist perspective but it's super cool to visit and see how the local Dominican people shop. Here you buy everything from produce, to meat, to spices. They have everything. It's a very busy place but something that is almost a 'must see'. After we left the market, we went to a regular modern supermarket to see how things are there. This was cool because we got to see their prices, what they offered, and buy anything that we may need. After we left the supermarket, we went through a few other cities just to see the areas as we journeyed back to our resort. This is something we'll always remember. When we go back to the DR next year, I'll probably book this exact same tour again with Mike. It was that amazing to us. I highly recommend it, and highly recommend Mike for any tour you're looking to do. Mike, thank you so much for a memorable day and one that we absolutely loved. We cannot wait to see you in the future my new friend.

We really enjoyed seeing all aspects of the Dominican Republic. Mike was extremely knowledgeable and friendly! We feel this tour was very authentic. It was awesome to meet some families and see how their everyday life is. When we come back to the Dominican Republic we definitely will be booking another tour with him!
