- Carrie TCranberry Lake, New York16 contributionsGreat Relatively Easy Hike with Nice RewardThe hike to Middleham Falls is well marked and safe. There are no river crossing NY a and one small stream crossing. This out and back trail is 1.7 miles with an elevation gain of 639’. A guide is not needed unless you want some help to find the best scrambling location to get to the pool at the base of falls. There is a comfortable and safe viewing platform available at the falls. The hike was a lot of up and down with many steps. There were lots of tree roots and it was muddy in some spots but it’s been raining on and off the last couple days. There was a $5 USD charge per person the enter down road to trailhead. Also area at the end of the trailhead is under major construction. It didn’t affect us. The attendant that we paid for pass to said park wherever you can and that worked fine.Visited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 March 2023
- Camper7054035 contributionsGreat time with NilbertWhat shall we say. Middleham Falls was a great hike but strenous with peaks and valleys. It took us 1.5 each way to get through the hike with of course rest stops. The altitude was quite high but we took breaks to rest and stayed hydrated. We cannot thank our guide Nilbert enough for his patience, great and positive attitude, spirit was beautiful with a great smile. He was knowledgeable and helped us alot. Took good care of us through the hike going up and coming down. Middleham falls is absolutely beautiful and nature picture perfect. Once, we reached it, it was like something out of a book. We had a great time and would like to sincerely thank Nilbert for being a great tour guide and friend. We hope to see you soon.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 14 November 2023
- Chanteze M6 contributionsGreat hikeIf you’re not a fan of hiking don’t do this. This hike was awesome. Early morning hike took like 45mins to an hour. A lot of trees, forestry; hence the reason it’s cool and chilly between there.Visited November 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 6 February 2024

Strenous hike, but worth, took us longer than sign says (45 minutes vs 1 hour). We were lucky enough to be there completely alone.

All the falls in Dominica have a slightly different character. This was the most remote of all the ones we visited. Access to the site is up a very steep road which is good until the last 500m. This is because major reconstruction is underway, the visitor centre is completely closed and from speaking to the engineers on site, they are building a new luxury resort. However this makes a 4x4 essential to gain access anywhere close to the trailhead entrance.
We would describe the walk as moderately difficult. The trail goes through the most dense and pristine rain forest of all the falls we visited. The three mile return trail is primarily uphill on the outward leg in a series of clearly marked log steps but many are uneven, steep and some are mud covered. Early in the walk you cross a stream by walking across stepping stones. The environment is hot and humid. Towards the end of the hike as you start to approach the location of the falls, the path falls steeply downhill and care is needed to avoid slipping. This eventually takes you to a viewing platform giving a good close view of the 200-foot waterfall, one of the tallest in Dominica. Here there is space on rocks to admire the view or a further descent can take you to a series of pools a little further away from the falls themselves. The trail is well marked and a guide is not needed.
We took our time on the walk up stopping frequently to admire the sights and sounds of the jungle. As the path is narrow, you also stop frequently to allow fellow hikers to pass coming in the opposite direction. We saw a parrot in flight, several brightly coloured crabs, gecko’s and interesting flora. It took us about an hour and fifteen minutes to ascend and under an hour coming back down. Walking poles are a great benefit that helps with the uneven surface and good shoes are needed to cope with the terrain.
This was the best of all the rain forest walks we did in Dominica.

Our day started off great as we met our guide and made our way to Middleham Falls. CAN anyone do it without a guide? Probably. But having Chadi.767treks with us provided several things: 1. Confidence about getting to the trailhead so no stress trying to figure that out. 2. He is very knowledgeable about Dominican and Caribbean history as well as local flora and fauna. 3. He is passionate about his work. 4. He’s a great photographer!
The trail itself is moderately strenuous. Typical ups and downs. We’re 61 and I’ve had two hip replacements and we did fine.
When you get that first real look of the falls it takes your breath away. I thought that was it until our guide said there was another view from the platform. Absolutely stunning!
If you’re in Dominica you don’t want to miss this hike. You also want to give chadi.767treks an opportunity to put a fabulous day together for you.

This was our 3rd visit to Middleham Falls, but more than 20 years have passed since our last visit. The hike was moderately strenuous but well worth it and our guide, Chadi (chadi.767treks on Instagram) was patient and wonderfully helpful when we needed it. We were two older, fairly fit women and our 19-year-old, extremely fit nephew. While we ladies rested from the hike in, Chadi took our nephew to the pool and directed him as he climbed and jumped off multiple times. Well worth the hike and delightful along the way. We saw Jaco parrots several times! Along the way, we saw several Chadi is a wonderful guide and I dearly love Dominica!

I travelled to Dominica alone to trek The Middleham waterfall and the boiling lake and it was a fabulous and enchanting experience. An absolutely awesome trek through such awesome and jaw dropping beauty that is Dominica. It isn’t called the nature isle for no reason. The trek was about an hour and is a must for anyone who has a love for nature and hiking. I would definitely recommend using a guide because it is easy to get lost. I used Chadi, he was the exact mix of professional, deeply knowledgeable of all aspects of the flora, fauna and nature. We even heard the famous 'Hunger Games' Mountain Whistler bird. It was captivating and an experience I'll never forget. The falls were worth the trek, so high and spectacular, we got into the water and the power was magical. Look for chadi.767treks on instagram. You won’t be disappointed

Are taxis available at the cruise port to take you to Middleham Falls and return? Cost?

I bet their are I was on an excursion. The hike is a tough one have good shoes. And watch the razor grass
Could you provide costs and time of the adventure? We have heard that this island is not a beach island but rather about waterfalls and rain forests. Thanks

The previous response is right on the button, Dominica is definitely more about waterfalls, hot springs and hikes rather than the beaches. The actual hike will take about an hour up, but you do need to drive to the beginning of the hiking trail, so if you are driving yourself there (as in having acquired a rental for the duration of time on the island), please get a guide to take you along the trail. As long as you are a nature lover, you will definitely have an awesome time hiking to Middleham. Have fun!!

Do you have to be able to swim and would you take a four year old? Thanks

Our tour group provided life belts. It would be a much more enjoyable experience if you are a confident swimmer. A 4 year old could wade at the entrance but I wouldn't recommend taking them in the gorge.
