The gothic-looking church, Chiesa Collegiata is in the centre of the small, medieval, hilltop town of San Ginesio. This 11th century building is one of the oldest in the town and is dedicated to St Ginesio, a Roman musician and mime who was beheaded by the rabid anti-Christian emperor, Diocletian.
It’s a heavy stone structure with a strong German influence, which is not surprising when you learn that the upper facade was built by Henry the German. A 1421 inscription names Enrico Alemanno as the maestro builder (the name literally translates as Henry the German).
Sadly the church suffered during the 2016 earthquakes. Steel cable ties and scaffolding cover a large part of the facade and are also wrapped around the top of the large square tower. Due to the damage, you can’t go inside any more.
However the lower facade remains uncovered. We were intrigued by the single arched portal or entrance, with its seven rows of arches and beautifully muted pink and white striped travertine. Tucked away amongst the detailed patterning, we spotted a small, grim looking face on the right hand side and an extended hand holding a globe on the left hand side. Hidden symbols?
The tower also remains largely free of scaffolding. With its bulbous onion-like spire, it is one of the church’s most dominant features.

One of the oldest buildings of the inwall old city. Old wall paintings, a legend of knight Templar that is buried somewhere in the building but the place unknown ( with secret maps? gold of the Order?) and you can feel inside as at year 1100 AC.

Well worth a visit this church overlooks the Piazza Gentili and contains some great artwork amidst spectacular architecture - and it isn't swarming with people with selfie sticks!
The crypt has some amazing frescos but we all felt weird down there - hairs sticking up and the like!

The church is not only exceptionally pretty but also very unusual. The onion dome is strange for one, at least in this part of Italy, and the striking, ornate brick (or is it tile?) screen-like top part of the facade is also completely unlike anything else in the area. We didn't have time for more than a few minutes inside. There's a beautiful fresco in a niche on the west wall to the left of the door. We'll have to go back.
