We did this walk on advice from the NPS rep. It was not as taxing as Bear Fence trail but had nice views at the peak with a small covered rest area and plateau for views and photos. I would recommend this walk if you...More

The upper trail hike is short and sweet. Views are nice but really not that different from the skyline drive overlooks.

It's listed as an easy hike with just a 500' grade. It's pretty much all uphill for the whole mile from upper hawksbill parking lot. My 76 yr old husband said a couple of times that he wasn't sure he could do it (especially after...More

Relatively steep, crowded and without a view not worth the effort. It probably would be if there was clear weather so wait, if necessary.

We took a hike up here after we heard it was the highest point in the park. They said it was a 360 degree view, but it wasn't. Maybe in winter, but that didn't really take away from the stunning view. It was amazing. We...More

Hawksbill Mountain, at 4050 feet above sea level, is the highest point in Shenandoah. There are a couple different ways to reach the summit. We hiked the Upper Hawksbill Trail, which is probably the easiest route. Starting from the Upper Hawksbill Trailhead at milepost 47...More

This is a great hike — somewhat challenging with an incredible view at the top of the mountain. We took the extra side trip to the Rock Creek (Springs?) cabin which was really fun! There is a composting toilet at the shelter and cabin.

great 270 degree view, especially after heavy snow. Highest point in Shenandoah National Park. A good hiking route is whiteoak canyon trail -> whiteoak fire rd -> skyland/big meadows horse trail -> lower hawksbill trail.

If you are in good physical condition and you enjoy hiking up tall mountains and taking pictures of spectacular landscapes, you should plan to tackle one of the trails that leads to the summit of Hawksbill Mountain in Shenandoah National Park. Located near Stanley, Virginia,...More

Upper Hawksbill is a less traveled narrow rocky trail with uphill and level path and a good rock scramble. The lower hawksbill is a steady uphill climb to the summit. Glad we hiked upper to lower! It took 1:40 to do the circuit.

It took us about an hour mostly because we stopped for husband to rest, also to explore the trees, tracks, etc.
