This is a must for any visiting. The trail from the parking lot is only half a mile but be prepared for a very steep hike up. It is all paved and there are benches/rocks to rest on the way up. Views are amazing and...More

It is only 0.5 mile hike to the top but feels like a lot more. However the hike and views are definitely worth it. We went in the morning and were able to see fog rolling in and out over the mountains.

We came here on a Wednesday morning when it was a bit foggy/rainy so when we got to the top around 8:30am we got a view of some of the valley/mountains below from the parking lot for a few minutes but by the time we...More

We visited here and walked up to the viewing area. It says .5 mile one way but it felt longer and it was uphill. If you are old and fat like me then take a rest at each of the benches. Plus I have a...More

6,644 in elevation you truly are on top of Ole Smoky. The drive up is long as you need to take your time with the winding roads but it's just so beautiful. Loads of scenic overlooks, streams, trails, waterfalls occupy your drive up. Once you...More

Planned to visit only Newfound gap since we’re leaving in the afternoon. Saw the signs when we were at Newfound gap and headed to Clingmans dome. Lots of parking available but we came early, when we were heading out, it was filling up fast. The...More

This was a "must do" according to the Suglarlands Visitor Center Folks. They also suggested we allocate several hours to this journey. It's a free experience. The road to Clingman's Dome was rather windy, so take it slow. We went in the morning, and we...More

Went around noon on a Saturday in August. A couple of things to be prepared for: 1) Limited parking. Popular destination but not much parking space. Be prepared to circle the parking lot. 2) I thought I had done my research but was surprised when...More

One of the best, most scenic places in the Smokies. The signs clearly say no strollers or wagons, but people still had them. I'm thinking some of the guests couldn't read English. The reason for no strollers or wagons is that it's a VERY steep,...More

At least 1 1/2- 2 hours if the weather cooperates. It was misting rain while we were there. Visibility was not very good and it can get chilly.

Clingmans Dome is the name of the mountain. The road to the Clingmans Dome parking area is a bit curvy and there are some drop offs. I would think your husband's problem would be that road more than the .5 mile paved hike... More
