We visited the vistor center of Death Valley in Furnace creek. The explanatory signs in the center were clear and simple, and we were amazed to learn that in Death Valley:
- the temperature often exceeds 50°C, with a record of 57°C!!!
- the annual average rainfall of only 1.96 inches!!!!
- is the place of lowest point in the USA at 282 feet below sea level

Great Place for an Orientation to all Sites in Death Valley.
Apr 2021
We stopped on the way to our hotel in Furnace Creek to obtain information and to frankly cool off and look at the displays. Thankfully, the center was open and the staff informative. Furnace Creek is the location of two of the 3 hotels located in Death Valley, plus camp grounds, and conveniently located roughly in the center.

The Views are Spectacular, the Park isn’t.

We planned reasonably well before our visit. We printed off their horrible map and thought it’s not too hard to navigate around the park. We came down from Northern Nevada and the northern entrance is closed as it was flooded out. So we automatically missed the northern part because we would not have time to backtrack to it. We came in at the entrance that comes from Beatty, Nevada. When you get to the entrance of this vast space, there are no maps, no Rangers and the kiosk does not vend the $33 park pass. The road immediately comes to a “Y” and, because there is no cell signal, we had no idea which way was the Furnace Creek Visitor Center. We came to another T in the road and ended up going west, not east and almost exited the park. You have to wait in line in the middle of the week in the middle of the day in order to get in a get a map that has any use at all. We saw the park, but had little time to get out of the car. One of the worst marked National Parks in the USA.

Must Stop
Apr 2021
The visitors center is a must see for me at each park I go to. We got our map and newspaper. At this park, the newspaper became more important than the park map because the park is so big. The newspaper marked out the Must See places to drive to and the best hikes in the park. We mostly went by this guidance as we planned our 3 days in the park.
I also like to do the Jr Ranger Program (even as an adult) and this is where to get started. They were kind enough to give me the badge upon visiting, in case we didn't come back by. (Which we didn't since the park is so big.)
The bookstore is on the small side and only 5 -6 people were allowed inside at a time due to COVID. Their selection was limited but I do like to buy most of my souvenirs in the park store to support the NPS.
The parking lot does have many covered parking spots. There is also a huge thermometer outside for a great photo opp. It's a good place to stop for bathrooms with running water.

Get’s the Job Done
Feb 2021 • Family
Not the most spectacular of NP visitor centers, but it gets the job done. It’s federal and in California, so I was pleased that the area was open at all. The bookstore was hugely disappointing, but we came to hike, so that was okay. Needless to say, all our DVNP souvenirs came from The Oasis. Staff was helpful and friendly, so that’s the main thing.

Hard to judge, not much opened there
Feb 2021
Everything was closed here except the restrooms, information booth and gift shop. I would recommend stopping here since only flush toilets we found in the park. Also can get maps of park if needed.
