Great Experience in Death Valley
May 2021
My wife and I passed through Death Valley National Park on our way from LA to SLC. This stop was one of the highlights of our visit to the park. The sand dunes are majestic in every way.

Unique
May 2021
This is the type of stop where you can spend as much or as little time as you want. I think we spent about 45 minutes. There's no official trail so just park and walk around.

Sand gets very hot so arrive early if you want to walk in sandals or you have kids who want to play in the sand.

Parking and pit toilets available.

The Amazing Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes
May 2021
I visited Death Valley in mid-May, just as the temperatures were starting to rise. I spent one evening at the sand dunes, through sunset and the experience was just amazing. Temps were in the low-90s even as the sun went down and it was actually quite comfortable walking around on the dunes. There are no paths, you just head out. I suppose if you tried hard enough you could get lost but it is highly unlikely. You can walk as far as you feel like, up as steep a dune face as you think you can handle. The next morning, I returned for sunrise which was, also, amazing. The temperature was ~80*F, again very comfortable for a morning walk in the sand. These sand dunes are my personal favorite part of Death Valley. But, please, be considerate, and keep your voices down. Part of the appeal is how quiet it can be in this park and no one wants to hear your conversation or listen to your children yell or cry.

Stunning
May 2021
Go early or late in the day if possible. The sand can be hot. But when it is cooler it is luxurious to walk barefoot.

great for photos
May 2021
Worth seeing especially if you love photography. Very large area of sand dunes. Be prepared to get lots of sand in your shoes. Go early morning when there are no footprints in sand and also cooler.
Was around a half hr drive from The Ranch hotel.

Perfect Size Dunes

Get out before sunrise and hike well out into them for the best experience. Lots of animal tracks to find if you look. Take food, water and a camera.

Unexpected even in DV
Apr 2021
Just off the road are these very cool dunes of varying heights. Short walk but note the sand is hot getting hotter (we were there in late April). Very different from the other DV features. Short drive from the Furnace Creek area. Can spend 30 minutes or a couple of hours

Beautiful sand dunes
Apr 2021
This place is quite under-rated considering it is away from the main Furnace Creek area but is definitely a good place to check out. The sand dunes are beautiful and vast and there is a lot of space to walk around despite the crowds.

Definitely Get Out and Walk Here
Apr 2021
It's a short walk to the dunes from the parking lot. There is RV parking if you need it. If you take the dunes to the right, fewer people go that way and there are fewer foot prints. Sand is tough to walk on but that's just how sand is.

Wow, like you went to the Sahara Desert
Apr 2021 • Couples
We went the wrong way on Highway 190 (which we found out was a very common mistake) and just stumbled upon this major attraction out in the desert. We hardly saw any cars when we were driving through the park, but when we pulled into this parking lot there were lots of people here; some had walked way out onto the dunes which is permitted. Some people had their plastic sleds and were sliding down it. Allegedly, there is wildlife here, but all we saw were some very tiny little black bugs.

We came, we saw, we won’t be back to this park again.
