Rockefeller financed the building of these carriage roads in the early 1900's. You can picture the ladies and gentlemen of the day touring this lovely park in their best outfits. There are almost 60 miles of these roads that now, serve as great bking lanes.

These are great trails for hiking. We ended up on the carriage trail on a particularly busy weekend at the park when we were unable to find parking at the more popular sites. These trails were much nicer than I expected. They are gravel and...More

We rode with a large group of two families (9 people) and our two dogs. Not too difficult for our youngest riders (10) and manageable for those in ur group who aren't so fit. Bathrooms are "real" bathrooms, not outhouses, but they were definitely not...More

The Carriage roads and bridges were one of Acadia's biggest attractions to us. They are historically unique. However, as senior citizens, we didn't feel up to biking. So we decided to walk to six bridges which was easier for us than biking. We started at...More

In my opinion biking is the best way to experience the historic carriage roads. You can also walk or horse ride but no cars are allowed. We rented our bikes from Bar Harbor Cycle Shop for $50 two bikes open at 9am return by 5pm....More

I cycled the Witch Hole and Eagle Lake roads. The Witch Hole route is definitely the easiest, but don't be fooled...there are some steady inclines that some may find difficult. If you don't ride bikes often, you may need to walk some of it. No...More

So...... the Carriage Roads. Biking. We started at the north-end of Eagle Lake and then went up (south) around Jordan Pond. Pretty much the standard route as I understand it. We did have an unplanned detour though. The roads are not well marked at all....More

You can ride from the rental location, or put your bike on the island explorer (thank you LLBean), and get out at eagle lake or jordon pond.
