Built in 1946 this beautiful theater features performances of Rakugo which comprises comedy, music, juggling and magic. The theater is built out of wood and is very traditional in it's appearance and is open every Saturday. When walking past, one cannot avoid the very traditional look of the theater and it's Japanese characters. The theater is only 50m from the Tokyu Stay Shinjuku hotel where I stayed and 30m away from the Shinjuku-Sanchome subway station.…

As a westerner with only a basic working knowledge of Japanese, I thought it might be fun to take in the bargain Saturday evening performances for 500 Yen. I'm glad I went, because rakugo is something that most tourists never get the chance to see, and this theatre has a great reputation. Not particularly large, I was lucky to get a ticket, despite getting in line a bit after nine; the floor seating filled and I had to sit on a pillow on the side gallery on the tatami. A little uncomfortable, but not too bad. A very funny performance, even though I had difficulty following parts of it. A very varied crowd, but all locals apart from myself. A good show for those who want to experience the cultural immersion, but don't go in expecting anyone to speak English. It would be most appreciated by those with some degree of Japanese fluency.…
