It's fantastic place for trekking, hiking, biking, birdwatching and Cultural tours. There are facial tattooed women, the tradition of Chin culture and local ways of life that you can observe and you can even interact with locals to participate in spiritual rituals, ceremonies and celebrations. If you would would like to visit Chin state, please contact a licensed tour guide called Philip whose contact details are written:

Amazing hiking through the Chin Villages and meeting local families even being invited into some schools. The Hike is through the hills so can be hard but is worth every step. Stayed with a beautiful family and shared freshly prepared meals together. So many beautiful moments on this trip. A really untouched place in the world.

There is no vehicle access and without a guide interaction would not be possible.

To support healthy tourism go with a licensed tour guide. My guide was Phillip who spoke local dialects as well as really good English. Phillip is from one of the Tribes and could provide great insight into village life as well as knowing local families to visit and share some snacks with.

It is important to speak in advance to tailor a trip to your travels and needs. Contact: kingphilip23.8@gmail.com

I stayed at Monicas guesthouse which was a great spot and Monica was really helpful with everything in the area.

I had a very good experience doing a short 2 days/1 night trek through some villages around Mindat, with a local guide called Philip.
He is a friendly young man who speaks a good English and has a very good knowledge of the local culture and folklore.

It was a pleasure to be guided through the villages by him also because he knew many of the people in the villages and seemed to be in very good relations with them, which was perfect in order to get to know local people and ask them any sort of question regarding their way of living (Philip was of course often acting as a translator... he speaks not only Burmese, but also the local language).

As all the guided tours in Chin State, the price for the trek was a bit expensive, but it was actually cheaper than the ones offered by other guides and trekking companies based in Mindat, plus his price included food as well (which often is not with other companies).

He has got a facebook page called "Chin Trekking and Cultural Tours", where you can find his contact details and photos from some of his tours. He also organises longer trekkings, I think even up to 8 days.

I was fortunate enough to have Nay Chay meet me in Sittwe and take me upriver to Minbya and explore the town and nearby villages.
If flying into Sittwe you are best to arrive around Midday as boats upriver leave around1pm or 2 pm.
We then headed north again to Mrauk-U which was another fantastic and unique experience. Nay Chay was a very accommodating guide and I would not hesitate to use his services again. If you are thinking about exploring the region, please do not hesitate to contact Nay Chay. He is reachable via Facebook.

Go and visit close by villages. Take a bit bigger boat and enjoy. We went on river 2 times, local boat drivers were a bit fearful of going too far.

Although there are roughly 20 Chin villages accessible from Mrauk-U, no more than eight are regularly visited by tourists. Of these eight villages, Pan Paung is the one most frequented and most touristy. Popular enough to rate an icon on Google Maps, my friend Nay Chay comments that the tiny village has “many souvenir shops”. “Shops” is a bit of an exaggeration. The families of the four old tattooed gals that live here do indeed weave and sell scarves, but hanging scarves from the bamboo fences in front of their homes hardly make Pan Paung a shopping mecca.

Having previously made three very enjoyable boat trips up the Lemro River and visiting a half dozen different villages, Nay Chay suggested we do something different and go somewhere off the beaten path.

Located forty kilometers south of Mrauk-U, Minbya Township is well off the tourist radar and currently qualifies as off the beaten path.

Here the Chin villages, there are many, are also situated in close proximity to the Lemro River but can be easily accessed by road utilizing either a car or motorcycle. The most remote of the villages we visited required a short hike through lush farmer’s fields or a five-minute boat ride across a narrow creek.

These small villages, really no more than clusters of houses with the occasional school, are typical of Rakhine state: no running water, electricity or any signs of tourism. The villages we met were generally friendly and often invited us into their home for green tea and a chat.

So, for those travelers who want to stray off the common tourist route and visit some truly remote areas, suggest you contact my friend Nay Chay and tour the Chin Villages of Minbya Township.

Nay Chay can be found on Facebook as: Nay Chay - Mrauk U Tattoo Village Guide or phone him, at 09250126742.

His friend and fellow tour guide Mg Than Tun can be reached by phone at 09250761329

I went to the Chin villages near Mrauk U with Nay Chay who’s good reviews found here. He’s really a very good option: full of initiative, talkative, flexible for your needs. And it’s absolutely worth it taking a guide because without interaction there is no any sense visiting the villages.
His English is not perfect, but good enough to make simple conversations.
You can find Nay Chay on facebook as Nay Chay - Mrauk U Tattoo Village Guide.

It's very important to choose a guide that knows the villages and the inhabitants. There are many agencies that organize the trek (1-2-3...days) but if the guide is not a native you will not stop to talk, drink tea, take pictures or other with the inhabitants of the tribal village. You 'll risk to walk from a village to another without meet someone or only children. If you guide is a local, women and men will call you, invite you for a conversation or a drink in the hut. Be carefull in the wet season: often the roads land , it's dangerous. If you want a picture of a tattoo woman you have to take it far away with a zoom or you have to get a conversation with her, so you can ask to photograph. Mindat is not a nice town but in his market and along the roads (especially in downtown)you can meet many tattoo women. Perhaps they can ask money. Always in Mindat you can listen to the flute played with the nose. The musician is a 93 years old tattoo woman. To be seen! Remember: don't donate nothing to the children on the way: do not get used them to the charity.
