About
Our role is to make Gainsborough's history and heritage accessible to all. Our archives include information on companies including Marshalls and Rose Brothers, schools, buildings, local newspapers, burials and cemeteries. We have a wide variety of displays and changing exhibitions, well established research room and a small tea room with full facilities. We welcome all visitors and have a lift to provide disabled access to all floors.

Unexpected treasure trove!
Feb 2020
My partner's sister, who teaches in Gainsborough, wanted to visit the centre, which is based in the old telephone exchange, with a view to taking a school party. We popped in on Saturday morning, and had a cheap and cheerful cuppa in the delightful little 'Exchange Tea Room' - free biscuits! - before exploring further. Staffed by charming and knowledgeable volunteers, this turned out to be an unexpected treasure trove of local history. They have three storeys of displays, artefacts and information, including a street scene. On the top floor you can see what was once a flat for the security guard, and still contains its original fireplace with cooking range. Gainsborough was once an important port, and later an equally important manufacturing centre - so the contents of this building are a fantastic resource for anyone wishing to delve into these areas of history; or to research their family history, as the archive includes the records of hundreds of people who were employed by the big companies in the past. I have no local links, but I found it a fascinating and delightful way to spend the morning, and have no doubt we will return.

This is well worth a visit. Council are not doing enough to promote and support this treasure trove of Gainsborough history. The museum is staffed by very friendly volunteers and we had such an enjoyable afternoon. Upstairs has recreations of old shops and rooms and makes you feel like you have gone back in time for a while. Highly recommended.

3 floors of interesting Heritage. Amazing if you are tracing your family history the top floor is given over to local archives including newspaper articles and photographs. Stop for a drink and a slice of home made cake at very reasonable prices.

Discover Lincolnshire Weekend 2019
Mar 2019 • Friends
When I've been in Gainsborough before I have just walked past the Heritage Centre without thinking of going inside.

Today I visited Gainsborough as part of the Discover Lincolnshire Weekend event, went for a visit and was pleasantly surprised how much there was to look at and explore.

My Mom saw so much she remembered and scarily I've gotten to the middle age when I have now started to be the same!

While it's a massive building they have crammed it full of stuff to look at. Quite often I'm the one to kind of ignore descriptions added for displayed items but I really did learn a lot from making the effort.

Definitely recommend a visit.

Full of interesting and informative facts about the town and its past. The staff were extremely helpful and went the extra mile in helping to find information about my family who had all worked at Marshall's in the past. Totally free with a small cafe attatched

Found the leaflet for this placewhen visiting Gainsborough Old Hall, only a few minutes walk away.A really excellent display depicting the past of the town and locality. Never realised that so many 'firsts' came from the town. It has a small street scene with shops from the area, and a a right trip down memory lane seeing all the things that were common when my wife and I were kids. It also has a huge archive and library. When we went they were experimenting with free entry and relying on donations, the price was only 3 quid anyway, so dropped the 6 in the donation box. A little gem of history and a great collection of artifacts. It has a lift as well as stairs to the 3 floors, so ok with anyone who has walking difficulty. It also has a very nice little tearoom. A good place to visit.
