A drive away from Vila do Porto is Pico Alto.
A car is recommended to get here as it involves some steep roads to get here (it can be done by bike if you're a TDF champion)
A well marked hiking trail is posted out around Pico Alto. Me not being a hardcore hiking enthusiast found it fairly easy going and we completed the trail in around an hour or so. It does state it takes 2 hours so maybe we missed some out.
Take some water and a bit of food as there are no facilities up there. There will be only you and the wildlife, accompanied by the stunning views.

Great view of the island from the top of the mountain. Steps are steep but handrails are there so easy access.

another great viewing spot

Tallest hill on Santa Maria rewarding us with a great view of the island. The day we went up the top was clear but interesting to see the clouds surround the island but clear beyond them. A viewpoint that gives a good perspective of the island. A few steep stairs to climb but nothing serious enough to not go.

Well worth the climb !

First a drive and then some steps up to the top.. well worth it..it is like looking at two different islands sandwiched together.. one side to the north green and very scenic the other side the south side of the island a flat plain..where the airport and main town is situated. I have vertigo but felt fine at the top and so glad I made the effort.

Santa Maria's best belvedere.

Nice ride or walk upt to the top. Pico Alto hosts some communication artefacts and radar from the Portuguese Ministry of Defense but the compound is not closed and you can even park the car there and walk to the next view point. Total view over Santa Maria, if have time do not miss it.
On the way back maybe drive through Anjos, will find also huge Radio Telescopes from the European Space Agency.

You can drive almost to the top of this mountain on a tar,but curvy, road.A short walk takes you to some very nice views all around the island.

Clouds!

A beautiful drive to the top, but totally smothered in cloud when we topped out. Need to come back in summer as the summit didn't clear during our 3 days on the island.

The highest point of Santa Maria, a short drive up followed with a walk up the mountain. Once you get there you can see the entire island and the ocean surrounding it, stunning.

Beautiful and Highest Mountain.

Beautiful. It is the highest place in Santa Maria. At the top I saw coast to coast, including the different terrain.
