About
At Springfontein we are not making our wines, we are supporting our vines to give birth to their kids - bottles borne through humbleness, driven by the willingness to go beyond the extra mile. Come by anytime to experience yourself. Our Ulumbaza Wine Bar(n) is open for tastings (and delicious snacks) on 365 days a year.

After driving a very dusty road to the Ulumbaza wine bar we had an excellent experience. The butternut soup we had was excellent with great service and a fantastic wine tasting. Driving in we expected something more but once in this beautiful cabin / Wine bar we were treated very well. We were the only two people in the room ( out of season) but the wien service and food was great. The wine is very expensive but delicious. If you wish to sit outside on clear days the views are also nice.

This is a must-have experience for every lover of good food and good wine. We have been there some years ago for an exquisite dining experience and made the promis to come back, as we did this year. First of all they have more spce for accomodation yet. We have been twice in their wine barn, enyoing the excellent dry aged steaks together with their outstanding wines. They are all certified as ecilogical/biological made (certified by the European label). My personal favourites are the Pinotages, but let me vome back also to the other restaurant. A few month ago a 2 Michelin star chef de cuisine from the Netherlands has started to implement extraordinary gourmet experiences here in a region where nature and a more or less rural population is based. We have been there for 2 different 6 courses menues which were extraordinary, no question about! This together with these great wines from this vinery has been a culinary experience we will truly never forget. So, congrats to Johst Weber, the CEO of Springfontein, for this extraordinary marriage of wines and food!

I went for a wine tasting as I was particularly interested in the White Pinotage, but there were no tastings allowed of the wine, but I could buy a glass for R115! Needless to say, I passed the White Pinotage, and just tasted the red Pinotage.
What impressed me the most was the knowledge and enthusiasm of the lady serving us

An absolutely fabulous weekend, good food, good wine and an amazing host, Bea-Marie. Bea went out of her way to make sure we had the best stay ever.

My first visit to EATS at Springfontein Wine Estate. It was a beautiful day so they had the lunch set up outside.
We opted for the 3 course menu. What a surprise. With all the anous bouche palate cleansers inbetween. So dont expect only 3 courses. ! The food was excellent. Service equally as excellent . Will definately return.
Only suggestion is maybe have citronella candles to keep the flies away. We know its a farm, but I prefer the flies not to be near such an incredible meal!!! Excellent job by chef and team. A definate hidden GEM. Thanks

Wine tasting in a beautiful renovated barn really sets the scene. Elizabeth was friendly and knowledgeable making the experience memorable.
There was a small tasting fee but we certainly didn't pay R400 for the tasting - sorry can’t remember exact price!

A group of us, having just completed a hike, came for a winetasting, but were horrified at the price - R440 per person just for a winetasting! I have never paid that price anywhere, not even in Stellenbosch or Franschhoek. The day was saved, however, by the delightful Elizabeth who found a way to keep us happy and entertained. Well done, Elizabeth, and thank you for your friendly and charming manner. We landed up having a fun afternoon after all.

During our holidays in SA we spent a day in Springfontein Wine Estate. The owner Johst Weber and his team Tariro, Hildegard and Jeanne showed us around and gave us a deep insight into the secrets of ecological top class wine making. After the tour we we sat together tasting a great variety of pinotage and chenin blancs. Don't leave without a glass of "Gadda da Vida Pinotage". The estate is a bit off the main tourist routes but definately worth to make a little detour

We visited this estate with the sommelier from our hotel Grootbos. Winemaker Tariro was kind enough to give us a personal tour of the vineyards and a detailed explanation of the terroir (limestone ridge) and wine-making philosophy (organic!). The tasting room was large and lovely. A solid food menu is available if you need something more substantial. The meat spring rolls were excellent.

It was our first introduction to South African chenin Blanc and pinotage. We left with two crates - the 2015 vintages were excellent!

Some animals spotted in the area - guinea hens, caracals, a peacock and a rather lovely farm cat!

The surrounding village is also very pretty. Well worth a stop.
