About
Phillipskop Mountain Reserve protects 246ha of beautiful fynbos on the slopes of the Klein River Mountains. It is also home to Phillipskop Cave, an important local heritage site due to the presence of rock art - the only recorded rock art on the Cape Whale Coast. There are a range of hiking trails for all abilities leading to a small waterfall, the peak of Phillipskop itself, interesting rock formations, such as the David and Goliath Rock Stacks, as well as lots of magnificent views. The trails can be combined into longer circular routes. WATERFALL HIKING TRAIL (3.5km) An easy, more or less level, hike to a small waterfall with a popular picnic spot underneath a beautiful rock candlewood tree. This is also the route to take to access Phillipskop Cave. ROCK STACKS HIKING TRAIL (3km) A short climb up to admire the two rock stacks, David and Goliath, with great views on the way back across the fields of the Overberg. This trail is good to combine with the Waterfall Hiking Trail for a circular route. SADDLE HIKING TRAIL (4km) A chance to reach the highest parts of the reserve. Beautiful views from the Saddle into the hidden valley behind Phillipskop. You can go from here up to the peak itself or onto the ridge of the Klein River Mountains to look down on Tesselaarsdal.

Stunning views and hikes
Jun 2021 • Couples
We stayed 2 nights in the reserve. Our cottage Restio had views all round. The cottage is surprisingly very well insulated and we didn't feel the cold winter nights. Safe and stunning hikes, beautiful flora. Interesting San Rock Art. Rock Stacks David & Goliath was awesome. We did use walking sticks as some of the paths are steep with loose rocks. Love the quiet surrounds and the prolific bird life. Wake up to see the sunrise, you might catch that glorious red one like we did.

Lovely Location for a Group Trip
Feb 2021 • Family
A group of friends with young children rented all 5 of the cabins. The location was beautiful with tons of hiking options. The new pool really made our stay. We had a wonderful weekend. One word of caution- you are out in nature. Our cabin had lots of ants and a few spiders, so be warned. Overall it was a great weekend trip from Cape Town.

Phenomenal hiking in pristine fynbos.
Jan 2021 • Friends
Our hike up to Phillipskop peak through pristine fynbos on clear trails was rewarded with amazing views.

What a fantastic suprise to see the dramatic valley below as you cross the saddle... The cave with Khoisan rock art was easy to spot thanks to the informative notice board.

The appeal of this place is the unspoilt pristine wilderness and plenty of points of interest.

We'll definitely be back!

If my 7r old can do Haarkappers...
Aug 2020
This property is home to a few hundred different species of plants which makes it very special indeed. We loved it; managed to get the 7 year old to get to the Peak at the back - a fantastic view I am sure (when not covered in mist!) ; he spotted the Black Eagle too. We will definitely be back.

Special anniversary escape
Jul 2020
Everything about our first stay at Phillipskop exceeded our expectations. The stunning fynbos, the well kept trails, the bird life (fish eagles, Verreaux's eagles and sugarbirds etc) and the wonderful, spacious accommodation. We can't wait to return to see other seasons' flowers. It's perfect for nature lovers, those who want to escape the city and not have to drive too far, for hikers and families that need space. This was a perfect first wedding anniversary holiday for us!

Walk in the fynbos
Feb 2020 • Couples
This is definitely one to do in Stanford if you like to get (safely) close up to the the flora and fauna in this wonderful part of the world. Our guide, Chris is so knowledgeable, interesting, kind and thoughtful. Highly recommended as a lovely experience for all.

Thanks Judith, it was great to meet you both and your excitement at what we saw along the way (even the spiders) made it all the more worthwhile.

We stayed at Phillipskop for a long weekend as a wine club and thoroughly enjoyed it. The hikes were great, the chalets were comfortable and the environment was absolutely beautiful. A real treat.

Big Nature & Super Hikes
Oct 2019
The reserve is stunning and offers gentle hikes and if wanted, also longer ones.
We hiked for about 2 hours, great views all around and we were the only ones in the reserve. Pure soul food.
Afterwards we went to the Cheese Farm for a picnic! What more can you ask for!

A great getaway for the family
Jul 2019 • Family
For the second time, we had an absolutely wonderful time at Phillipskop. The chalets are very comfortable and spacious. The views are amazing. And the closeness to the outdoors is so good in helping you feel refreshed and restored. I definitely recommend a visit to Phillipskop.
