The climb to the top of Saxholl Crater is a short 5-10 minutes (depending on your fitness) to the top. Up a series of winding metal stairs, the view from the top on a clear day is incredible. On a windy day, be careful as...More

The sun was out! Thank goodness! This was right off the main park road so we stopped. The stairs to the top made this easily accessible, if you can do a lot of steps. We were almost blown off the top of the crater -...More

This volcanic crater is located within Snaefellsjokull National Park in West Iceland. It has a very unique set of metal stairs which climb up to the rim and blend in with the crater. The view of the glacier in the distance from the top is...More

A fair few steps to the top but not steep steps at all I was doing two at once. Great views at the top somewhere special to be almost in the crater of a inactive volcano and free so well with a visit.

We climbed Saxholl crater because we were in the area and had a bit of extra time. Of the craters I have climbed in Iceland (Grabrock, Eldborg, Viti, Hverfjall) it is my least favorite.. this crater has been adapted for people on bus tours. There...More

There was a long metal staircase leading up to the top. It was windy up there, but the view was great.

This crater was a wonderful surprise! We just happened upon it and decided to climb it. They have built stairs along the side of the crater to the top, so it's a fast easy climb. Great stop!

This beautiful crater is easy to see from the road. There is free parking and wide metal steps lead to the rim and to magnificent views of the surrounding mountains. There isn't a handrail though which is a little off putting if you aren't keen...More

The Iceland tourism board really needs to work on their safety barriers, this hike consists of about 200 metal stairs to climb up and on the way up if you're following traditional road rules you are on the inside and you feel quite safe. The...More

Climb of many stairs (metal) up to a beautiful view from the top. It was very windy at the top and on the way down. The crater is visible from the road well before you approach the entrance road to it. A 'must do' stop.

My family and I were driving around and then we saw that it was a “secret” crater there. We stopped and it was definitely worth it! It was stairs all the way up to the crater and it was beautiful to see an old volcano.

If you plan on visiting the Saxholl Crater, be prepared for a hike and watch out on the road because the exit is hard to miss. We were traveling down the highway and we totally missed the path to the crater so we had to...More
