The tour through the monastery is very cool. It is just so old and things are labeled well, but mostly in German. The museum is absolutely amazing-there are artifacts as well as really great exhibits about the entire history of the monastery. Again all in German, but with the Google translate app you could interpret most of it. It is really beautifully done. Do the museum tour first and then walk around the grounds, so you have an appreciation for the history of the place. For very young children it may not be as interesting but our 9 year old son liked it.

It is not very famous, but impressive UNESCO site. The have a lot to see and learn about monks who lives there and their home. The only downside is very little information in language then German.

A nice afternoon in walkenried. The museum does not look it from the outside, but a an absolute must see. The audiotour takes you right back in time, while walking through the old buildings. The tour explains really well the life and time of the monks. You learn about the origins of these klosters.

The site is within 15 mins walk from train station but not enough signs for travller who goes on foot like me. So i followed direction sign for car and finally reached car park. But then i found out there are shorter ways.

Adult's entry fee of the indoor museum () costs 4 euro (no student discount). But ruins outside is free.
There is guiding radio available for rent but German only. The staff was friendly and spoke English.
The museum is well designed :
-route is one way , make sure we won't repeat the same way. i appreciate it.
-the Kloster is 2-stories high including big garden in the middle, corridors on ground floor ,exhibition rooms on the first floor & ruins outside
-sculptures including cerement stones are kept well. Though they are almost 900 years old but some words on the stones can still be read.
-I especially like the sound effect there eg. church sacred music (choir ) was played at the corridors as well as exhibition rooms, made me feel like in middle age; Verbal explanation is available on some displays items

Worth visiting

The Walkenried Abbey has been designated part of a World Cultural Heritage site by UNESCO and oozes of history. The museum is small but informative, with English captions on most of the exhibition.
The only downside is was, that they didn't accept VISA credit card when we visited, but thankfully we had cash.
Worth a visit. If not just to feel the presence of history.
