We did the trail in April 2022
First night Right at the ocean in large Wood houses. A bit rustic but great views
Dinner was in substitute tent since the restaurant is under rebuild. The large tent had no Charme whatsoever, food was ok. But not a place to stay

2nd night was in misty mountain lodge which principally is quite nice, but was rather unmanaged and staff didn’t really care. Dinner and Bfast were quite basic and could have been much better.

3rd night was at Fernery, all luxury back. Superb cabins, superb food, very caring staff.

The hike itself was nice and not strenuous at all. Easy peasy for all a bit trained

The guide Werner was very caring and super educated about the entire surrounding , great value to the hike

All in all a nice trip BUT I think, given comparisons what you get For the money it is quite a bit overpriced. The food and lodging doesn’t stack up to Garden Root experiences

This hike is absolutely spectacular, vistas around every corner and up every hill. Our guide Ashley was amazing, shared so much area knowledge, and generally was a pleasure to be around. He kept an eye on us, as my husband is 77, and I am 64, so we did not find the trail easy, however it felt like a major achievement at the end, and the whole experience was so worth it. The accommodation was top drawer, spa bath and jacuzzi for the sore muscles were a joy to behold. We enjoyed our stay in each one of the properties, food was great, and friendly people. I think its important to mention that you will enjoy this hike more if you have a reasonable level of fitness, however there is no rush so you can do it slowly but there is some rock scrambling which could be a challenge for some, but Ashley guided us expertly, so it was all good. I would also recommend trail shoes or hiking boots not trainers. If you are on the trail and it rains, the correct shoes could save twisting your ankle or hurting your knees. Walking stick/s are highly recommended. I loved every second of this hike, and will be back again.

We did this 3 day adventure in March 2023. It was an amazing experience! Our guide's name was Ash. He was so knowledgeable and friendly. He was also patient and helpful. My husband and I are in our 60's. I can walk for a long distance and many hours on regular paths. But I found this hike extremely challenging due to its many uphills and downhills. It's following a rugged coastline. It was often a test of sheer endurance. I'm so glad I didn't give up. Ash and the others were encouraging. I was talking with Ash about this, and he said he heard this quote "Difficult roads often lead to beautiful destinations". That was true for me. There was so much beauty to appreciate along the way. The journey was completely worth the effort! The views were stunning. It was great being out in the "wild", enjoying the fresh ocean breeze, the sound of the waves, the dramatic cliffs, the jungle paths, the trees and plants! Each of the three lodges/hotels were great in their own way. Our first night was spent at Storms River Camp and the simple cabin was right on the coast. The second night at Misty Mountain was beautiful (excellent chef too!) and our third night at The Fernery was even more luxurious. All the meals were delicious and very high quality. I learned so much personally through this experience and had a wonderful time. As I look back at the photos, I'm extremely grateful for this experience. On a practical note, bring a walking stick. It's helpful!!!

The trail could have been so good and ended up being really shambolic and poorly organized , with the accommodation in the middle at misty mountain a long way below the standard of the first and last places we stayed. Fortunately we did the trail with a really good group of people who made it work well for us overall , but the organization was a constant disappointment that we had to rise above.

it started on the first evening , when no one turned up to welcome the group and so we effectively introduced ourselves to each other . Then we arrived for the start of the trail at the restaurant in the camp the next morning and again the guides hadn't bothered to turn up. We then had a split in the group about whether we should just start without them and let them catch up , or sit around waiting for ages. In the end we half started and then the guys did turn up . A quick 'sorry ' but clearly this was normal and the guys gave the impression that it wasn't them who overslept or whatever and maybe the bosses had messed up the rota . We then walked in the rain that was setting in by now , after all the delays ,but all the same we had got to know each other well by now ( shared disgust at of the organisers etc ) , so it was an adventure still - as we finally got to the middle camp with lightning sparking around us .

This place, misty mountain , was a real budget place, but we were soaking through so at least the showers worked well .

The next day was good and sunny and this day was much better , with the guides turning up on time and a very pleasant walk . The last night was also good- they saved the best accomodation until the end .

On the final day they again messed up - using an old truck they knew was broken ( the guide explained it was beyond repair , but they kept trying to force it into service without funding proper repairs ) , so by the time a substitute was found we couldn't do the drive across the old gorge road , which was pretty poor again . They offered to substitute a short stroll to an old tree that most of us had already done , so we just opted to finish early and missed that day's adventure too .

No offers of refunds of course .

I am hoping the idiots who run this can hire someone who can get their act together , as it used to be run well and should b a great trip - but it needs someone who knows what they are doing to grab it by the scruff of the neck and make it deliver what you expect from an expensive trip like this .

Very well organised right from the start.

You have your first night to relax in the national park. Although we were keen to start exploring, so we did the three hour round trip hike to the waterfall and had a quick swim.

Our luggage was collected in the morning and we met our lovely guide Marius and we were off. The pace was pretty slow to start with, stopping along the way to be told all about the local fauna. After climbing a steep hill we were greeted by two smiling faces and a picnic table of fresh drinks. It was glorious!

It turned out to be the owners of the Misty Mountain Reserve. They brought our packed lunches and gave them to our guide (we got to choose which sandwiches we wanted the night before).

After some more coastal path hiking we headed down to sea level to have lunch. After lunch we jumped in the rock pool to cool off.

It was then only another hour of hiking before we ended up back at the Misty Mountain Reserve where we were greeted with more lovely drinks and we feel into our private hot tub to relax the muscles.

We had dinner there in the evening which was good. Lots of star gazing in the evening and the sunset was beautiful.

We were tired in the morning and after breakfast made the mistake of lying on the sun loungers while waiting for Marius to arrive. This made us extra tired!!! We soon woke up tho and where back to our normal stride. The morning on the second day is mostly along the coast - we kept looking out to the ocean as we were so keen to spot Dolphins.

We had to venture through the forest and where shocked at all the spider webs everywhere. We each grabbed a stick and waved it in front of our face as we walked to make sure we didn't walk into any cobwebs! This was the only part of the trip that my husband and I didn't like. There was a lot of buzzing around our ears as well with all the flies.

After some time we came to a clearing where one of the guys from the Fernery had set up a beautiful picnic buffet. It was quiet a site to behold. Thankfully there were no flies around at this time.

Then after a lovely lunch we were back on the route. And after an hour or two (I can't remember how long exactly) we arrived in the grounds of the Fernery.

Marius gave us a tour of the working plant. It was very interesting to see as working in an office myself I never get to see anything like that.

Each of the places we stayed in got better and better as the nights went on (the first night was very basic). We stayed in this beautiful wooden chalet with our own private balcony.

The food at the Fernery was great with amazing presentation and care taken. The staff were very attentive. We thoroughly enjoyed our time there.

When Marius drove us back to our car on the last morning we were 10 mins from the car park when I look out to the ocean and see a pod of 30 dolphins swimming by. It was the perfect end to a great and memorable trip.

It starts by falling asleep to the crashing surf in Storm River Mouth, and finishes in the luxury of the Fernery overlooking the gorge, stopping overnight in the aptly named Misty Mountains.

Inbetweentimes was a lovely ramble along the coast, we saw Dolphins, Whales, the flora of the Fynbos and a variety of SA birds. The pace was relaxed, and Henry our guide was a fount of knowledge and good company.

Both the Dolphin trail and the Otter trail begin at the Storms River Tsitsikamma National Park Rest Camp. The Dolphin trail proceeds northwards while the Otter trail goes south. Despite the terrain and degree of difficulty for both trails being mostly similar, that is where all further similarities end. The Otter trail is a quarter the price of the Dolphin Trail, for good reason. The luxury of having your suitcase transported to each lodge along the way with the pampering of a surprise forest picnic at lunch time, are well worth the reduced weight in your wallet.

The process from Storms River Rest Camp to Misty Mountain Lodge and then The Fernery is an escalation of enjoyment that just gets better and better; much like the Emmaus Walk; for those that have been so fortunate.

The Chalets at Storms river are clean and good, but coupled with the most awe-inspiring view of the entire ocean, certainly escalates this resort to that of world-class status. However, the food offered at the rest camp restaurant is well below par; less quantity and more quality from the kitchen is sorely needed. Rain bucketed down during dinner on the eve before the Dolphin trail. The promised boat ride, weather permitting, into the mouth and up the Storms river simply never materialised despite perfect weather in the morning. We were somewhat sceptical of the necessity for sudden “pontoon-patching” which we viewed as a poor excuse to avoid taking the boat out for us few hikers.

We were six in all, including Henry our very competent guide. I don’t know why, but I expected that we would walk along the beach for most of the two day, three night hike; as easy as a walk in the park. How wrong I was! We only walked along the beach for 5 minutes at most, on a postage-stamp size stretch of sand in the big picture of things. It was a “real hike” in the true sense of the word. One of our party even caused his expensive hiking-boots to fall apart, but the guide carried a bandage which he skilfully wrapped around the boot to keep “the patient” intact for the rest of the way. We experienced remarkably varied terrain as we ascended and descended the steep coastal hills of the Tsitsikamma. The most breath-taking scenery was often when the trail was just six inches wide and etched into the very crest of the hill. Without the shrubbery on the sea-side for perceived confidence, I would have crawled along on all fours.

Elevated coastal rock crossings were accomplished with the greatest respect for the narrow rock facing and height, which required our undivided attention; for just one slip would have allowed the rest of the party to divide that hikers lunch out.

On both hiking days, we began walking after breakfast, around 9:30am and we eagerly upped our late afternoon pace to arrive at our destination at around 5:00pm to chat about the day over cocktails at sunset and to anticipate the dining experience to follow.

We enjoyed our stay at the charming Misty Mountain Reserve where we were treated with warmth and friendship. The next morning, after breakfast, we continued our journey taking the steep decline through the forest, down to sea level. By the time we reached the rocks we all confessed to having “jelly-legs”.

An interesting fact which our guide mentioned was that no humans have ever been permitted to enter this section of the Tsitsikamma National Park except for Dolphin trail hikers, but only from 2001. The pristine condition of the area as well as the abundance and total freedom for all the fish in the sea, was testament to his words.

The February weather was typically hot and humid, especially when the path broke out into the open, but walking inside the protection of the coastal forests was like entering a naturally air-conditioned trail once again. The temperature transitions were distinctly noticeable.

One memorable occasion was one minute walking through a thick enchanting forest and suddenly coming upon a clearing in the middle of nowhere where staff of The Fernery appeared to have crept into the forest and laid out a surprise white-tablecloth lunch for us weary hikers; complete with orange juice, chicken salad and even filter coffee. I suppose wine tasting would have made us too lazy for the afternoon hike ... just a thought anyway!

Remember not to leave home without a tube of good anti-chaff gel. Coat your feet well before putting on socks; then a good dollop between the legs is also vital. A walking stick will assist with stabilisation when traversing the rocks, as well as welcome support during trail descents.

I recommend the Dolphin Trail wholeheartedly, for a maximum age of 70, despite what the official website may say.

The Dolphin trail is a great way to see what the Tsitsikamma National Park has to offer. Great views of the ocean and the forest, a really easy walk including some great bridge crossings. We were there in December when it was hot, and full of people. I'd advise going early morning to beat the crowds!

Dear Guest Thank you for this review. The hike is kept to small and limited groups, in order to afford you the privilege of experiencing the wonderful trail exclusively. It is a 4 day (3 night) slackpacking trail with luxurious accommodation and amazing meals. Kind regards, Diane

My wife and I enjoyed all about the tour except for the 'basic' first nights accommodation (Bolt on door not working, no blinds working), however I must say that it looked better in the dark once we had the lights on, in fact it looked quite cozy, and unfortunately it rained from the minute we set off on our first day and rained heavily all day but the six of us ( two from Switzerland, and two from Germany) did not give up, even after the guide (Werner) gave us the option of getting the vehicle to us. We did not stop for our lunch as there was no dry shelter and continued on to our second stop at Misty. By this time 14-10 we were soaked to the skin literally and the contents of our rucksacks were soaked and so pleased to see the 'great' improvement to our accommodation. We were greeted and taken to our lodge which was spacious and had a jacuzzi bath where we ate our lunch to get warm. They were very helpful and dried all our clothing, and some even had theirs washed and dried. The evening meal was lovely as it was at all of the venues.
The next day was dry and we had a good day followed by a stay at the Fernery which is magnificent. The accommodation and all the buildings were beautiful and luxurious, as was the service. If we do come back to SA, this will be on our itinerary.
All in all a great three nights with plenty of information from our guide Werner.
