Kay our guide was without doubt the most friendly, knowledgable and passionate guide we’ve ever had the fortune of spending time with. We were running a little late and Kay was so accommodating in making sure we still got our 2 hour tour conducted. The level of safety briefing and Segway advice and guidance was exemplary throughout. Plenty of artistic photo stops merged with local history of the area and the environment and wildlife, made this tour a pure pleasure to attend. Well worth a booking! Thanks Kay, you are a true professional…

I decided to spend some money I was given for my birthday on an experience I'd long wanted to have - and the hour-long Segway adventure didn't disappoint! Our Guide was Madom and he was brilliant. Safety is paramount and so we didn't set out from the centre until we'd practised for 15 minutes and he was confident we were proficient. He was attentive and patient throughout and constantly reminded us what to do. You aren't allowed to take photos while you're riding the Segway but he offered to take both photos and a short video of us.
A really memorable 70th birthday present!

Great ride and safety was a key issue. Madoc put in every effort to make the ride enjoyable. Took great pictures of us and even made a small video of us riding the sedgeways.

I was in Tsitsikama as part of a garden route tour and picked up a Segway tours leaflet at the backpackers I was staying at. It sounded like fun so I asked my guide to book it for me and a fellow member of the group. It was r285, which is a bit pricey but an hour seemed ok.

We were told we had to go at the end of the day, and so turned up at 4.45 as requested to be told we had to wait for the segways to charge up as they'd had a busy day. I think we should have left at that point because it didn't get much better.
After waiting about 3/4 of an hour we went round to the training area. We were in a small group of 4.5 (a Chinese couple not with us had brought their fairly young baby who the guide had on his back and seemed to be a major attention grabber)
The training was reasonable, although we still waited around for our individual devices and we were ready to go after about 15 minutes.

Setting off, we followed our guide and we didn't get to the Main Street before my device started acting strange and pushing me off which meant it was out of power, so we had to wait for another one to be delivered. At this point the baby was crying so the mother decided to give up and so I was given her device and her and the baby were picked up by the person who was delivering the alternate device (more on this shortly).
We set off again down the road, got to the forest and about 200m in when the guide (who didn't actually do anything I would class as guiding, I expected some knowledge of the area) told us we had to turn round as the devices didn't have enough power to take us through the forest!
We headed back with a bit of a detour round a township (again, not a tour as the guide was off in front so didn't speak to us) half an hour after we set off. To say I was disappointed would be an understatement!!

I spoke to the girl who took my money (who happens to come from near my hometown) to ask for a refund and she said she would sort something out. Whilst I was filling my review form (which I filled out honestly with the above issues) a guy came and said we could have a complimentary drink and when we went to the bar he was very understanding and said he would come see me the following day with my refund.
The next day came and went and so I walked the half mile back to the place and spoke to the girl from the day before. She said she had spoken to her boss who said that we had had a tour and would not be getting a refund. She apparently said that because we had to wait for the Chinese people it took the time off the tour, which was bull because we waited for a replacement device for me. I asked to speak to her but was refused and told that her word was final.

If an hour wait followed by a ride up and down a road on devices that were not fit for purpose with a guy who didn't give any information about the place is considered a full tour then it is a complete rip off!
The girl then wished me a good trip in the most sarcastic voice, which did not help at all!

I've been in South Africa for 2 months and this was the first example of really malicious and bad customer service and a complete lack of understanding of how to manage an unfortunate situation and I feel completely ripped off and badly treated and lied to by the staff and owner of this company.

I hope that with this review they lose more than the 285 rand I paid for this sub par experience.

Avoid!!!

This is one of the most fun adventures our family of 4 has done together - and we've done a few!

A ten minute "training session" is enough to get you comfortable on a Segway. Your guide will teach you the basics on a little course set out on the lawns at the starting point. Start, stop, mount, dismount, forward, back, slalom... within a few minutes, even our youngest (a rather nervous 12 yr old girl) was comfortable.

Off we set, down the road, following the guide. Passing the blase locals and open-mouthed tourists, we trundled past the coffee shops and restaurants, and into the forest. By the time we reached the forest track, everyone has gained confidence, and the vehicles had become second nature. (That said, one of our party fell off twice, trying to do backward circles, or spin in the mud - boys will be boys! - he wasn't injured at all)

The forest is stunningly beautiful and happily the Segways are almost silent, so the peace isn't disturbed. Our guide took us onto little-used tracks and paths, over streams, all the time surrounded by huge trees and ferns.

The hour-long ride was enough for us (there's a 2-hr option too), as it's quite a tiring experience - one must balance all the time, so your muscles are working gently but constantly.

The Segways are such fun to ride. By the time we reached the turning point in the forest, I was wondering how much they cost to buy, and picturing a future where we all used them in place of cars... :)

Definitely worth doing. If you are in the area, don't miss it.

A few tips/pointers:
They provide bottled water to each person, and helmets.
Don't wear flip-flops, you need a shoe that will stay on your foot when you step backwards.
Take a camera, and ask the guide to stop now and then, and take a pic of your group
You need a little bravery to start with, but will quickly be comfortable
Price in Jan 2013 was R285 per person for the 1 hour ride.

From the moment I told my kids that we could possibly go on the segway tour they were on the edge of their seats waiting for a spot to open up. The fact that we had a 10 year old and a 7 year old made me worry about how the guide will handle them, specially seeing that the minimum age is 10. Welcome was brilliant. He never got irritated with them and patiently explained how it work. The adults and my 10 year old picked it up quickly but the 7 year old was a little light to do it properly (and that is why the minimum age is 10), but rather than leave her behind he "dragged" her segway after his and helped her ever single step of the way. I take my hat off to him. The experience is amazing with 20 minutes spent practising before heading through the village and then offroad into the forest and plantation. The outing can really be recommended to anybody looking for a wonderful experience.

What an amazing experience
Will definitely be back
Our guide, Chester was so very helpful in every way. From the few minutes training to the end of our tour. The tour into the forest was magical, the history informative.
Thank you all for an awesome experience.

Madom was great guide, the tour took us into the forest in a magical atmosphere. It was a great riding experience, the segway's were very fast and felt great. It was a great experience for the entire family: teenagers, kids and parents!

It was our first try at Segway, and it was great fun! Our guide was excellent, showed us all how to handle them and then we were off on the hour long tour through the forest. Great fun, and a wonderful activity to do together as a family. Highly recommended.

Sipho our guide was the best , made sure that everybody in the group knew exactly how to use the segway in a safe way, took the time to help those who needed some more practice and confidence.
the ride in thetsitsikama forest was beautiful, at the end we all wished they had a 3 hour tour.
