Sake Brewery & Museum - Definitely Worth A Visit
Jul 2019
Tamamura Honten Brewery is located in Yamanouchi and this location is very close to the Snow Monkey Park - you can combine both visits as they are rather close to each other. The brewery is in the hot spring area so maybe even try out the hot spring (onsen) after a walk in the Snow Monkey park. We drove to the brewery and arrived about half an hour before closing - they close at 6pm.
Tamamura Honten is one of the oldest brewery in the area making use of the clean water and excellent climate to make some very nice sakes. The sakes are free for tasting which is always great.
Located within the brewery is also a museum that showcases the history of sake making. Also laid out are the certificates awarded to the brewery. And upstairs, you may visit the museum and also view the brewery from upstairs.
For the sake, they have a full range of sake - from Ginjo to Daiginjo and they even make beer - craft beer. The sake is light and aromatic, sweet even. Very good sake IMO.
The attendant at hand speaks good English and very accommodating to the questions you might have. They have a list in English so be sure to ask. For beer lovers, I understand they craft their own beer and some have been winning awards.
We ended up buying 4 bottles of sake for our own consumption. A worthwhile trip if you are in the Nagano area.

Free sake tasting and beautiful museum of the brewery!
Mar 2019 • Couples
This was recommended to us by another Tripadvisor reviewer (Thanks, Pam). We walked into here on our way back walking from the snow monkey park. Was surprised when one of the staff member pointed us to the bar and asked us to help ourselves - and no charges! We sampled all the seven sakes and purchased a bottle after that to take it back to our ryokan and enjoy it before dinner.

The museum was quaint with beautiful artifacts of the brewery, which is over 200 years old!

Excellent sake
Mar 2019 • Couples
The museum itself is quickly overseen but if you are interested in sake a visit to the Tamamura Honten kura (brewery) is a must. We were fortunate enough to visit the city of Yudanaka for a few days during the nama sake "season" (the period where fresh, unpasteurized sake is released) and had ample opportunity to indulge in the fresh produce of the kura. The Tamamura Honten ginjo and daiginjo types of sake also come highly recommended.

Btw, their beers are great too :-)

great place

I actually didn't take the time to see the art, because I was hungry and wanted to find lunch. However, the sake tasting was helpful, and I selected some sake -- which I later found at a local gift shop for twice the price, so I was glad to have purchased it at the Storehouse.

Great place to stop to recharge!

Essential pit-stop on the way back from the snow monkey park, as they have free samples you can try of a range of delicious sake. There’s also a pay-for beer bar if you wanted to have a bit more than a sample, and all bottles are on sale to take away.

Fun time in a small town
Apr 2018
We had a decent time at this place. There isn't much of staff here, so don't expect too much. They leave out a few bottles of sake for you to taste. Sake was decent and they let you have as much as you'd like. It's place to stop after checking out the snow monkeys!

Good way to spend an hour
Jan 2018 • Family
The other reviews describe it well. If you're staying in Shibu-onsen, you probably have an hour to spare, and this is a great way to relax. Free sake samples (self-serve), and if you like it, the bottles are reasonably priced. My wife and I had our two year old son, which I wouldn't recommend since he was incredibly bored (no surprise there), but we like sake too much to miss a brewery so close to where we were staying.

Some sake and beers
Jan 2018 • Couples
If you have nothing else to do, then this place is worth a visit. There is no customer service here. There are two beers on tap...an IPA and a double IPA? There's also a row of sake bottles that you can help yourself to. I'm not a sake connoisseur so I tried a few. The house is quite impressive and well restored / maintained. We didn't stay long.

Quirky
Aug 2017 • Family
We were staying in the area and noticed this place on a map. Being sake fans we thought we would find it. It's a walk up a fairly steep hill and we saw a wild monkey casually walk past us. Inside there is a gallery and we had a quick look but the free sake tasting got our interest more. There's many to try and it was great to taste a wide range. We purchased a bottle of sake which was very well priced. There's also wine and beer available. It was a nice visit in a quiet town.

one for a slow day
Apr 2017
strange attraction here, not much to see in the brewery apart from a lot of machinery, and the 'art museum' is a random collection of carpets and paintings upstairs in a dimly lit area that aren't actually japanese for the most part, and with not much info... the building is 150 + years old, so if you're interested, the actual construction of the place is worth a look, massive beams etc...you can of course sample their sake from a row of bottles on a bar, but the staff pretty much left us to our own devices, maybe if you were on a tour instead of just wandering about like us, the reception would be different...their famous 'snow monkey' sake is very nice, but carrying liquids adds a LOT of weight to your pack so don't buy too many!
