Monkeys not at the official park
Feb 2020 • Friends
We wandered up here on a long walk back from Snow Monkey Park to our ryokan in Yudanaka. Monkeys climbing all over the building! Then we headed out on the 一茶の散歩道 walking path on the map, coincidentally right behind the monkeys who seemed to be heading back to the hills for the night. Well, after about 10 minutes one of the monkeys decided we had followed them enough on the path and suddenly turned around and charged us. We fled!

Came here as I was late for snow monkeys. 112 steps to the TOP by stairs but I took a taxi from The train staton which costs 700yen. It was quiet, offers a good view of the town. There’s a giant bell which you can ring for world peace prayer.,

Yudanaka is a VERY strange village to arrive in less than 24 hours after arriving in Japan. There is no time to really understand the village life, and this little piece is no exception. a very very large statue on a hill next to a scrubby temple in a scrubby car park and there is NO ONE THERE. Its more than a little creepy and forgotten bu the view over the valley is great.

Beautiful blossoms

The temple here is nothing special but the principle attraction is the impressive large buddhist statue, which is reached after a pleasant stroll from either Shibu Onsen or Yudanaka, and the expansive views across the town and valley to the distant snow covered mountains..

We were very lucky to be there when the many sakura surrounding the temple were at their peak. They are a truly beautiful sight, with a path meandering between the trees from the statue to the road at the bottom of the hill.
