A great informative tour. I did not know what to expect, as this was my first time going on a mine tour. The museum was interesting and well laid out. We had to drive to the mine but it was worth the drive. The 2 guides were clear . funny and gave a great insight as to the life of a miner. It is cool inside, so bring a sweater and wear closed shoes, as the floors can be muddy and slippery

Great tour and museum! The museum is just a treasure trove of interesting information, photographs and rocks/items. Kept our 14 and 10 year olds interested. We enjoyed the mine tour immensely. Well worth the visit!

Cobalt is a frankly quite sad place now, almost empty, but it didn’t use to be that way. This museum takes visitors back to the mining heyday a century ago when thousands of people were working to extract silver and cobalt from the surrounding hills. Recommended.

The town of Cobalt is nice and the people are friendly, but some of the smaller places don't have much updated information on their websites (if they have them). We missed this museum, when we went through on a Tuesday, because it was closed. That was too bad, because the mining history of the town was the reason for our visit.

Visited with my kids late summer. The staff at the museum was so wonderful. They shared so much knowledge and information. We unexpectedly ended up in the area this summer and absolutely loved learning about this little town. We quickly realized we had watched a show on TVO " Main St ... Cobalt Ontario" and it was great to learn about all the spots and visit them in person.
Little did we know, our visit here toed in so well with their social studies curriculum when they returned back to school!
We hope to come back north another summer and visit the underground mine!

Although the collections of minerals are fairly impressive, the staff seemed to consist of one bored looking young woman, and one really old woman who seemed to be either annoyed or hard of hearing or both. There was a real lack of publications to purchase other than a few thin paper booklets, very overpriced. Neither of those two "staff" seemed to be able to answer any of the most basic historical questions I had, the place was so hot and stuffy I couldent stay for more than a few mins. As a past member of a number of historical societys I would wish the people choosing staff for the museum would try to hire people that actually have a mining background, and like the collection enough to study it, for the benifit of visitors.

This small museum in the middle of Cobalt, Ontario is right across the street from the head frame of a former silver mine.silver mine. It houses a collection of displays primarily about the heyday of silver mining from the first decade of the twentieth century through the early post WW2 years including a rocks and minerals section and a huge silver nugget. A mining equipment display is outside and across the street near the head frame which houses the Cobalt historical society. The museum offers an underground tour of a formerly operating silver mine as well as a self guided automobile tour of a couple of dozen mine sites where old workings and other interesting ruins and geological sites. Also on display in the museum is a model of "Ragged Chutes" a fascinating natural source of compressed air which was piped around the the area to power many of the mines in the Cobalt camp. don't miss this if you are in the area.

The mining Museum in Cobalt is the place to start, then explore the area mines and go on a tour of an original mine or two! It's a great way to learn more about the town's heritage. If you're up north in Ontario hunting or fishing, at least visit. It's a neat place!

this entire town is very worth while to check out, Lots of history and a ton of mine sites to explore. Ontario's most historic town and Canada's silver capital. Only thing is there is only one motel and i would not even rate it a one star, there is one bar in town that is a nice little pub or there is the legion, there is only two corner stores in town.
