Lovely tidal pond at Milford on Sea. Lots of different bird life including a heron, lapwings, common gulls, black headed gulls, Brent geese, Canada geese, stone chats, egrets, etc. Good walk onto the spit and down to key haven along the marshes.

An interesting walk from Milford on Sea

An interesting walk from Milford on Sea, You can start from the car park in the village, where there is a pathway taking you around the North side of the pond. The pond is full of swans and geese and there is a footbridge across to the spit. The walk back along the spit takes you back to the lighthouse, offering takeaways during lockdown ( book ahead).

Bird lover?

Their is a good sized bird hide next door to the council sheds on the edge of the car park for the Marine and the pond itself. It gives you a great view over virtually the whole pond and is renowned for its variety of wildlife that can be observed. Binoculars and a camera with a photo lense are highly recommended. The pond itself is tidal and fed by a canal from Keyhaven. It is a favourate spot with kids who can go crabbing from the two bridges that span this canal. Sadly there are a number of dog owners who do not have their unruly pets on a lead close to the water and allow their pets to chase the wild life on the pond. Obviously they are not too intelligent and do not 'get' it that this area is a breeding ground for some quite rare species of bird.

Spent some time here while working in Keyhaven. Wonderful selection of bird life. Close to the interesting Hurst Castle also well worth a visit.

Good place for bird watching
May 2019 • Couples
Sturt pond is along the side of and on the land side of Hurst spit closest to the main car park. There is also a bird hide to the rear of the council storage depot, accessed through two wire mesh gates. It is clearly marked and is open to the public every day (locked at night) The hide gives you an elevated view over the whole of the pond (actually it is more of a small lake and is tidal) There are pathways on two sides. It is frequented by many keen bird watchers and if you fancy an hour or so quiet time whilst watching the wild life, it is a good place to go. Dog owners are asked to keep their pets on leads when in the vicinity of the lake as some wild life has been disrupted (even killed) as a result of poor control of mans best friend.
