If you like modern church architecture and dalle de verre (slab glass) windows, then a visit to this church is most worthwhile. The church was completed in 1954, following the destruction of the previous church by the Allied Bombardment of 7-8 May 1944. The windows, designed by Gabriel Loire, and created by the Loire Studio near Chartres, cover a range of themes, the two most important being the Crucifixion of Christ and the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The windows in the apse represent the seven sacraments of Christian life: Baptism; the Eucharist; Confirmation; Reconciliation; Anointing of the sick; Marriage; and Holy Orders. The windows depicting Christ and the Virgin, in particular, are beautifully crafted and executed. It is no mean feat, for example, to convey Christ's impaled and bloodied hands with small chunks of glass and a matrix! (see photo)
