Amazing place. The town itself is fairly boring and very quiet. The main (only!) attraction are the walls and they are wonderful. Unlike other walled towns it's not just one wall - there are several 'layers' in the form of overlaid star shapes. It's a...More

I fall into the former category and was most appreciative of the genius of Vauban. Every detail is thoroughly integrated. The town in the center of the star-fort was designed for the military occupants and was spacious and comfortable in its day. My wife, who...More

While military history buffs will naturally find the ramparts fascinating, the sheer scale and beauty will attract others. Art intermingled with such an awe-inspiring setting makes for a thought-provoking visit. Accessibility is limited, but easy trails to meander ensure virtually everyone can explore at least...More

There is a path all around the fortifications. Temporary art installations are sometimes present. Worth a stroll even if you are not especially interested in forts.

We came here (my wife, 7 year old son and I) as part of our summer camping trip to Alsace. It is almost hidden away and not very well publicised but if you like your castles and forts I would highly recommend setting aside a...More

This fortress designed by Vaubon is worth a short visit if you are in the area..We were on a hiking trip and had an informed guide. This helped since the signage at the fortress is somewhat scanty. If nothing else, a visit will encourage you...More

This is our second visit to a Vauban-designed fortified city. (The first was Le Quesnoy). All we can say is that it is hard to wrap our heads around a public works project of this magnitude. 17+ km of high walls; perfect octogonal layout that...More

The town of Neuf brisach is an interesting fortified octagonal town on the French German border. Designed by the military engineer vauban who also designed the dam in Strasbourg design to flood the surrounding land as a defence. Built around 1700 it seems designed to...More

This is a small town. The kind of place where everyone must know your entire life, and vice versa. But for a stopover to see the history that gave rise to the place, it could be worth the side trip, if you're near Strasbourg or...More

Worth a wander around the old fortifications to try an understand the needs of that time. Must have taken years to complete and now they have a charming town within the old fort.
