My husband and I were lucky to arrange a private tour of the distillery and we were not disappointed. We received a warm welcome from Emma who was a fantastic host. She had a great knowledge of the history and production side of the distillery. We had a stroll to the beach where we sampled our first dram, the rain didn’t spoil the atmosphere. This was followed by a tour of the distillery and then a tasting. We had a great visit and would recommend a visit.

After having visited several distilleries in Scotland, and having visited Glenglassaugh two times, I have to say that this is my favourite tour!

Why?

Glenglassaugh has been mothballed for 22 years. It was reopend in 2008, and during the tour you will be informed about the process which brought the distillery back to live and all its small and not so small problems which had to be solved (and still this process has not ended yet)
For me as an engineer and also as a whisky enthusiast this tour is absolut outstanding.

You will see much more as you can see in other distilleries (e.g. bottling station (hand made!!) and also cask filling station) and you will be given very interesting information about all the stages of today's production and also what is now different in comparison to the production before 1986.

You will have the chance to taste matured whisky which has been produced before 1986 and after 2008. Both is really great stuff!

Simply highly recommend to every whisky enthusiast who is also interested in getting more detailed information about the whisky production.

Tours are only by appointment

Not to forget:
Have a beach walk after the tour directly from the distillery to Sandend.

A lovely tour led by Gill around this truly traditional distillery, although now owned by a global drinks name, this distillery is not an example of the latest high tech production techniques.
It is all done in the way my great grandparents would have expected with the sole exception of computerised heat control for the mash.
Plus you are visiting a distillery that is truly finding its feet again having only just come out of mothballs in 2008 so the first aged malts are only becoming available now: which adds a feel of pioneering to the visit and a real discovery in the tastings
All explained with charm and humour by Gill.

We popped into the distillery as it was on our doorstep to where we were staying. Having always had a very pleasant experience before when we have been staying at Sandend, we have been twice before, we called in to see what was new.
There was a very strong smell of disinfectant, not what we expected.
We had done the tour previously so didn't need to do it again,
They sell whisky straight out of the barrel, you get to bottle it yourself. Nice idea. Except that when my husband asked if he could sample it they said no as we had not done the tour.
So he asked if he could pay the price of the tour & have the sample then take the price off the cost of the whisky. They said no they don't have a licence to give samples.
But we know if you do the tour you get a sample. So do they or don't they have a licence to give samples?
He was disappointed & we walked away without buying anything. We were going to buy 2 bottles one for us & one for a friend, special request as he'd been there with us before.
It was all very sad as my husband felt it's a tough call when you can't get a dram in a distillery!!!

Had a wonderful guided tour of distillery. Great knowledge of the whisky process with a superb understanding of the local area. Sampling the whisky's afterwards was fun -again our guide Lesley was very informative. Can see this whisky being a great investment.

We had a tour with Brenda during the distillery 'silent season' which meant that there was no production in progress at the time.

Though this meant there was less activity to see but Brenda made up for this with making sure that we got an in-depth viewing of the production process as it would be when active.

Brenda was knowledgeable and I came away with more understanding of the differences in Stills and how this affects the final product. Though I've always known the importance of cask types in the creation of the product, Still differences was new to me.

Chatting to the warehouse staff about the barrel types and how they move the whisky between them to improve the product was fascinating.

This tour was part of a visit to the region connecting with my family roots and I came away having had a great experience.

The tasting was also great, Brenda listened to my tastes and gave me appropriate samples.

I came away with both the peated and classic Octave cask whiskies to remember a very special day by.

Had a great taste and tour of this little gem.
Our guide was most knowledgeable and helpful.

re-opened in 2008 i was surprised to see that most of the old interieur is still there, the mill, the still pots, mash tuns etc., guides were very charming and welcoming and the tour was held short and entertaining. the shop is small but hold a good selection of new and rare spirits. The Distillery is situated at the sea which makes it even more special

We live nearby so went on a wet Monday afternoon with our visitors. As we wanted to taste the whisky we each paid for the £15 tour. Our guide, Jeannine was very good; she has an excellent knowledge of the history of the distillery and the processes involved in distilling. The tour lasted about 40 minutes and we were encouraged to ask as many questions as we liked. Unfortunately the distillery was not operational at the time but the smells and atmosphere were still there. The tastings were very good - I bought a bottle! Please note that there is a toilet but no cafe. There is a tiny shop with the usual fayre. I wouldn't recommend Glenglassaugh for the very elderly or infirm because there are steps, some quite steep. Glad we went, quite expensive but that's the going rate for similar tours so didn't begrudge paying. Would recommend.
