We drove (July 10, 2018) from Woliso to Wenchi--about 1.5 hours. Current state of road very poor. 4wd vehicle certainly helpful. If not, at least vehicle with high clearance. (Addis to Woliso about 2.5 hours).
Nice trail (no guide needed actually--easy to follow trail. However,...More

We drove from Ambo to Wenchi, and the lake was amazing to be seen from the top of mountains. Horseback riding is also an option to reach the lake shore. Church priests has a lot to say about the monastery's establishment and its relics.

Sorry, only just seen the question - hope I'm not too late! It's a couple of hours, depending on traffic in Addis which can be busy. It's easy to visit in a day if you're short of time but better if you get a chance to spend longer and take time to walk around. I believe you can walk all the way around in about 5 hours but there are lots of shorter walks you can do. I swam in it this visit!
nice, you can choose from two alternatives
the 1st from Ambo road to Wonchi
the 2nd from Woliso to Wonchi
