Basque Country Full Day Tour from Bilbao

4 reviews
The Basque country is one of Spain’s most popular vacation destinations, but with limited time to explore, it can be a challenge to cram in all the highlights. This full-day tour from Bilbao offers a jam-packed itinerary, visiting the towns of Vitoria, Orduña, Santurtzi, and Portugalete; the Salinas de Añana salt valley and the Vizcaya Bridge.

We were able to get to this museum without a car - its a 20 minute flat walk from Balmaseda La Calzada ( the end station ) and there is a pavement for most of the walk. Its a must see for anyone interested in textile history as it is a perfectly preserved factory containing all the original machinery much in working order. There is also the opportunity to visit the owners living accommodation above the factory which is like stepping back into an early 20th century time warp. We asked our hotel in Bilbao to phone up before we started the journey to check that they were open and so we arrived to find an English speaking guide there to take us round. She was charming and spoke excellent English. We are very interested in industrial history which is one of the reasons we visited Bilbao - this little museum is a great example of that history.

Together with food, clothing is perhaps one of the famous things of the country, with the Balenciaga museum as an example. Here we know better about how this company making Basque berets (boinas) used to work, and it is quite interesting how a hat doomed to disappear has reinvented itself to be trendy again.

A textile factory where most of the machines are from 1892 and it was in operation until 1992. Very interesting to see an early stage in the industrial revolution.

Perhaps, "Boinas La Encartada Museoa" is a very good alternative for people who wants to know how was the live in 1880, when the machinery works by driven belts

Here you can take a trip into the past and see where the famous Boinas (Basque berets) were made for many years until fairly recently. This is now a museum with many of the machines left as they were including a Spinning Jenny. There is a Jacquard pattern weaving loom which has been restored to full working order. This is recommended for anyone with an interest in engineering, machinery, textiles, water power.
