The Shinkansen is a excellent way to get around Japan . Being a first time visitor to Japan we purchased a JR rail pass prior to our arrival, which was a great decision as we really got our money’s worth . The train is incredibly...More

Wonderful way to travel. It gives you so many options; in 2/3 hours you can be many miles away, see what you want to see and be back the same day. Easy, comfortable and reliable. During our stay we were using it for both long...More

The Shinkansen is the most efficient way to travel around in Japan . We went from Kyoto to Tokyo and Hiroshima , all with very less hassle. We carried only hand carry with us , sent our big bags from hotel to hotel . That's...More

It is the most indispensable means of transport for Tokyo, Shizuoka, Nagoya, Kyoto and Osaka. The characteristic of it is that there is almost no delay or discontinuities, and it is easier to purchase tickets and feel free to use it compared...More

The bullet train was convenient as was much public transportation experienced in Japan. The ticket counter staff often spoke English and were readily available to suggest travel routes and times upon request. It cost at least a hundred dollars for a one way trip between...More

I wish we had bullet trains in the US. This is a great way to travel, so much better than flying, clean, comfortable and spacious. Highly recommend.

With the Japan rail pass available to non-Japanese tourists, most shinkansen trains are free! They are spacious and comfortable, and makes travelling between major cities an enjoyable activity on its own. My son listed the shinkansen trains and the ever-present drink vending machines as his...More

For anything that requires more than 3 hours by bus or regular train, the shinkansen is the best way to go. Tickets can be bought right from the airport station itself and I would advise doing so there because it is not only convenient but...More

The greatest let down for foreigners. The Shinkansen tickets cannot be purchased from outside Japan but thousands of tourists need to use it. But once we arrive from other countries all the seats in all 4 types of Shinkansen trains are sold out for weeks...More

Questions & Answers
Ask a question
Hi, my family and I (4 adults & 2 toddlers) will need to travel from Tokyo to Kyoto on Jan 3rd, 2019. Planning to get a 7-day JR pass for the trip since we will be traveling between cities. I read that New Year holidays is busy season and probably difficult to reserve 6 seats on the bullet train. Unfortunately, we won't arrive at Japan until Jan 1st so we can't really make reservations ahead of time (I read we can only exchange for the JR pass and make reservations at the local exchange/ticket office). While I don't really care for having more leg room and a better seat, I am wondering if getting the JR Green Pass will increase my chances of getting a reservation when we arrive. I have read Green Pass is less flexible where you can't use it for the unreserved cars? But I assume Green Pass will let me reserve in both Green/Regular cars? Any other suggestions? Thanks

Hi there! Firstly, will your Tokyo-Kyoto journey be a round trip? If so, then the JR Pass becomes economical. The seats in Ordinary Class are pretty good; certainly better than Economy on airplanes. So you're really not... More

Carry-on luggage size baggage will fit overhead. But anything larger, you'll have to put your bags usually behind the last row or first row of seating, or in a designated spot, which you have to ask one of the staff to help... More
