Although this fortress was on my bucket list I didn't plan its visit in this strange time. I thought it would make no sense as museums are closed and guided tours are not possible. But while hiking around Weissenburg I was enjoying beautiful nature and nice weather so much that I didn't want to go home, kept on randomly taking trails until I reached Wulzburg.
And I am happy for this. I enjoyed amazing views to the town, walking around, learning a bit about history of this place and taking a lot of pictures. I can truly recommend a visit. There is a small parking lot just in front of main gate if you don't want to climb the hill. During my visit the castle restaurant was open, offering coffee, cakes and limited choice of main dishes to go.

This castle, just outside, Weissenburg is a huge structure built on the top of a hill overlooking the town. The fort has a long history and is well maintained by the local authorities, free to park and visit and very atmospheric. There is a small restaurant inside the castle grounds which serves good local specialities.

This is an imposing fortress built between 1588 and 1610 by the Margrave of Ansbach.
It features 5 bastions (hence a pentagonal shape) and a dry moat.

The fortress sits on a hill high above Weissenburg. From Weissenburg, the terracotta tiled roof above the 5 story buildings dominates. The fortress looks very different from the ground. The fortress had a very deep (>140 m) well that is 2.5 m wide. It also has a very small chapel/church.

The fortress has been a jail, POW camp during WW1 and an internment camp during WW2.

Views over Weissenburg and to the north are spectacular, especially towards sunset.

If you are feeling energetic, the walk up from Weissenburg and around the fortress is well worth while. The path is very steep in parts, and not signposted. Expect to walk about 10 Km for the return journey

What started out as a Benedictine Monastery, then became a square fort and later a pentagonal fortification. The tour will take you through its many iterations. It is certainly worth a trip for those who have not seen many such structures. For the historian or those with an interest in architecture, it is far less interesting, though photogenic.

We walked up the hill to see the castle. It's so interesting to walk around the walls, both inside and outside the fortress. The views are breathtaking, both on the way up the mountain and from the top.

A great walk and interesting day out.

We always take time to visit the Wultzburg when we go to Weissenburg. This is a great example of German castles. It is forever being restored but has stood the test of time. It has a huge dry moat and inside you can walk around the buildings in the walls, see the huge water storage tank and the deep well with a manpowered treadmill to raise the water from the depths. In the centre is a very good café where you can sit inside, or outside, and enjoy good food and drink.
