- P FUckfield, United Kingdom23 contributionsA perfect evening with the stars and universeThoroughly enjoyed a 'Stargazing evening' at the Science centre. We learnt so much, saw so many things including Jupiter, Saturn and Neptune through the telescopes (lucky with the weather) . The volunteers and staff cannot do enough for you and love to part their knowledge with some famous historical facts that happened at the centre years ago and what is up there in the sky (some mind-blowing). To also be allowed to see/try out the science experiments in the centre was an added bonus. We will be back again one day.Thank you for your review. Stargazing evenings are a great experience, especially when the weather permits night sky viewing. All of the evening team are passionate about astronomy and always happy to share their enthusiasm and knowledge. We also offer Astronomy Courses through the year and for something completely different - you can even now be married beneath an historic telescope!Written 6 December 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 8 October 2023
- MWEastbourne, United Kingdom25 contributionsKids didn't want to leaveBehind the slightly foreboding appearance I was really surprised at the depth of displays and activities within. Our kids found a tonne of stuff to hold their interest and the science show was well presented and just long enough to hold younger kids attention. I'd never been inside the Observatory before and for the hours we spent here it represents terrific value for money. The cafe was pretty reasonable also. We certainly be back with friends.Thank you for your review. We are delighted you all had an enjoyable visit. We rely upon visitor income but aim to offer great value for money. - Charlotte16 contributionsStargazing EveningWhat an amazing evening, my daughter was captivated from start to finish (as were me and my husband). We were very lucky with the weather and managed to see many things through various telescopes. A very big thank you to the staff and volunteers for giving their time to show and explain what we were seeing through the telescopes, as well as the history and answering questions. You certainly have further fuelled an 11 year olds love for space. We will definitely be back later in the year when we can hopefully see Saturn 🪐Thank you for your review. We are delighted you all enjoyed your evening visit. We offer stargazing evenings every couple of weeks through autumn / winter, and hope you can visit again.Written 1 November 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited February 2024Travelled with familyWritten 24 February 2024
- Joanna BHastings, United Kingdom9 contributionsFabulous Star GazingWhat an absolutely fantastic evening we had. Went to a Stargazing event and it was amazing, informative and just spectacular! This is a gem of a place to visit day and night and was a fabulous event for our family. It's very dark there and lots of steps involved so be aware of that. The people there doing the talks etc were lovely. They let us all take our time looking at Orions Belt, Jupiter, Uranus and the Moon, right down to the craters. Honestly it is an incredible thing to do and very affordable. The main centre was open too so we got to experience that too.Thank you for your review and positive comments. Clear evenings certainly offer a fantastic opportunity for stargazing in this dark site. - isaac w22 contributionsHerstmonceux Observatory is the star of SussexGreat for the science Great for the science history. The hands on science exhibits are numerous and working and so well designed. The explanations about the telescopes are clear, and interesting. The staff are charming and helpful. Probably the best parts were the talks. One is aimed at adults and older children (say +7) looking at the telescopes and another for younger children. I did not see the science presentation for youngsters but the telescope presentation was so professionally delivered that it came to life and engaged the audience. Ten out of ten.Thank you for your review and positive comments. Through the local school holidays we always aim to include fun, interactive science shows which can be enjoyed by all. These are included in the admission price as well as Telescope Tours. We hope you can visit again.Written 1 November 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited March 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 17 March 2024
- MrsP20 contributionsGreat day out - good value for a familyGreat day out with our grandsons aged 7 & 12. Lots of hands on stuff to do with an interesting observatory talk geared for children as well as adults set in two different domes. There was also an interactive science talk in one of the tents. It all made for 4 hours of science fun which the boys loved. You can take your own food and get hot drinks from the cafe, they do have a small selection of hot food sweets & cake. The main outside equipment was shut off due to the recent wet weather but that didn't spoil our enjoyment.Thank you for your review. Our outdoor areas are open until the weather dictates otherwise, and the start of 2024 certainly gave a lot of rain- infact the wettest March on record! - laureneroffeyWorthing, United Kingdom35 contributionsWonderful day out, would recommend. We had an absolutely fantastic day out at the Science Centre this week. All the staff were friendly, informative, and keen to help. Everything was set out in a way so easy to understand and accessible. Lots and lots of hands on activities, great talks (really engaging for the children), large picnic space. Spent over three hours here and would have been longer if weather was dry. Would definitely recommend (visited with 6yo, 7yo, 10yo, 39yo and 64yo).Thank you for your review. Our aim is to offer 'Spectacular Science for all', and I am delighted you all enjoyed your visit! - Dave CLondon, United Kingdom123 contributionsA pleasant discoveryI visited here on an organised group trip, and as I never heard of the place before, I was intrigued on what would be on offer. The site is impressive with the domes dotted around (including a hidden one behind the trees), interactive displays both outside and inside and friendly staff. Very interesting tour with access to the domes to learn about the telescopes; special mention to Jack for his knowledgeable and captivating explanation and dealing with a fairly large group. All the exhibitions will entrain both adults and children and facilities include a cafe with a good choice of food and a gift shop. The nearby castle and gardens can also be visited (although currently the castle is closed for renovation). For enthusiasts, the centre organises stargazing evenings throughout the year with the opportunity (weather permitting) to see the telescopes in action.Thank you for your review. - Simon8 contributionsLots of interaction for children to discover scienceWe visited here with our 2 1/2 year old and had a great time. There is loads of interactive things for kids of all ages to do. It’s interesting to find out about the history of the site. The cafe was fairly basic with toasties, sausage rolls and jacket potatoes being the main meal options. The staff were all very friendly and even with lots of school trips visiting whilst we were there it didn’t feel crowded. We combined this with a visit to the castle gardens next door. They are separate tickets as they are operated by different organisations which is a shame but neither was overly expensiveThank you for your review. We are a popular educational venue for school trips and all visitors, and we are delighted you enjoyed your visit.Written 1 November 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 8 June 2024
- EK11 contributionsAmazing interactive museum for all agesThis place is amazing! There are so many interactive displays which are really interesting and fun. The exhibitions cover so many things; the planets, the history of the planet, how electricity works, optical illusions etc. Great for small children and for teenagers. The entrance price includes science shows and a tour of the observatory. The place is very clean and there’s a really nice cafe too although there’s plenty of picnic tables if you want to bring food with you. The staff were lovely. I would highly recommend this place for a really great day out for the whole family.Thank you for your review. This is so good. Lots to do and great for any age. My children have always loved it - it’s sort of like a much better version of the Science Museum in London but everything works and is accessible. They also do star gazing evenings through the massive telescopes.
Lots to do outside as well which is really good.

We've just got home from a great day out at the Observatory Science Centre. There are lots of interactive exhibits helping kids to understand things like mechanics, electricity, magnetism and light. Some are fairly small and there are some large pieces outside. There are a couple of large water table type activities outside which our two (5 and 7yo) could have spent hours playing with. It was a science weekend and we went to a talk on sound, a planetarium show about cells in our body and a tour of the telescopes - all were very good and the kids enjoyed them. The astronomer giving the tour on the telescopes was particularly good, I think his name was Jack, his enthusiasm about astronomy really came across. We spent about 6 hours here today and felt the family ticket was a bargain price compared to other days out. We've travelled for about an hour and a half today from SE London but will definitely look to come again for another science weekend.

We visited on a recent Monday whilst on holiday in the area. We had seen the buildings on a recent painting competition and were keen to see the buildings in real life, as well as having an interest in astronomy too.
Unfortunately on the day we visited, there were many schoolchildren visiting - not a problem per see as it’s great to see children learning in an interactive environment. However it didn’t seem that there was any control so it wasn’t possible to see many of the exhibits as there were children just randomly running around pressing anything and everything but not really seeing why. It seemed like they’d all eaten too much sugar and were trying to run off all their extra energy!
Needless to say, we just took a few photos outside and left within 30 minutes so not a good value trip or one where we were able to really learn anything.
Also agree with other reviewers that the whole place is quite dated. This is perhaps a better place for families rather than a couples trip.

We attended the stargazing event on the Friday and camped over for one night. The observatory is a spectacular site. The professional staff who did the tours and talks of the telescopes were incredibly knowledgeable, friendly and we saw some wonderful sites. Thank you. The toilets were clean. The food at the cafe was expensive and not hot enough. There was nowhere on the campground to get a coffee or tea. My main issue is with the extremely rude staff (I’m assuming volunteers!) who think they own the place and were patrolling like guards. These older ladies need to be replaced with people with manners. The way they spoke to us on two separate occasions was far too jobsworthy. We also witnessed one of them being extremely rude to a lady with a laser. Ughh. I understand the site needs protection, but none of us were out of order and in actual fact we were all assisting other people. They need to attend a customer service course and learn how to speak to people in the correct manner. All the other staff in purple were brilliant. The groups that attended need to be more open and willing to share. We hung around a lot waiting for any sort of interaction that never happened apart from Dave who was amazing and the bloke on the raised part who was incredible with the paying visitors. I’m still annoyed at the biddies who ruined our experience. Apart from that it was great.

Thank you for your review and we are pleased you enjoyed the 20th Astronomy Festival.
All of the 'purple team' are passionate about their involvement in this historic site.
Several astronomy societies have volunteers that are present during the festival and it is unfortunate that this experience spoilt your evening.

Great playground which is just as educational as the rest of the venue. My children (8 and 6) loved the hands-on experience, and the shows were great too. Very affordable and good value for money.
We had a few showers on the day but there is plenty to do both indoors and outdoors.
The only downside was that lunch choices were very limited in the cafe - just a few sausage rolls, pre-packed sandwiches, fruit and snacks. Outside there was a van selling hot dogs and burgers/chips.

Thank you for your review. We are pleased you all had a great visit and enjoyed the science show and interactive exhibits - all designed & built by our charity.
Operating in an historic Listed site means we do not always have the space we require as a tourist attraction. .. and our Cafe is located in the former Optical Laboratory of The Royal Observatory!
Fortunately we had just invested (pre-Covid) in our own external catering unit so that we could provide hot food and this is now invaluable to us. Thank you for supporting us and we hope you have opportunity to visit again.

Brilliant, hands on science exploration. Loads to do. We only had time to spend the morning here but could easily have spent the day. Lots of outdoor equipment so better on a dry day, but lots to explore indoors too. There was a science show which was really good fun, although some of the links between the demonstrations and the science behind them could have been made clearer. We came with a 1, 4 and 7 year old and they all greatly enjoyed the morning.

We visited today as a family of five, from my mother-in-law in her 70's down to our youngest child at 4 and what a great day was had by all. So much to do and the kids loved all of it. Particularly loved the sound section and playing the therimin and playing with the voice stretcher. The outside experiments were a real highlight as well, the kids loved the water parts and stayed at these for ages. The staff were so very friendly and extremely helpful, including the cafe staff when we needed to discuss the options for the allergy our son has. We stayed all day and watched the telescope tour and the other science talk as well which was all good fun and very informative. Totally shocked that this was not filled to the rafters with all this place has to offer. If we lived locally, we would be back regularly. Thank you for such a great day.

We live about 40 minutes from the science museum and about two hours from the Observatory in Hailsham. I recommend the Observatory.
The last time we went to the science museum we were there for about an hour and a half and Katie (9) complained that there was hardly anything to do. The interactive part was boring and not very interactive.
In comparison, at the Observatory Katie didn’t stop pushing buttons and asking questions, she learnt how cogs work, sound vibrations and light, how crystals are formed and listened to a great talk (for an extra £2 each) on stars, constellations and planets (Katie wants to go to Mars). We could have spent all day there. We didn’t have time for the science talk.

What age group for visits. Times of opening sat 14th January
Written 13 January 2017
Not entirely sure of opening times for January but we went with children aged from 18 months to 10. Probably not ideal for the youngest child but all the others (5-10) had the best time ever! As did the adults - tons to see & do & interact with for most ages but we wouldn't take the youngest again. Have fun!
