Best beach vacation of my life
Jun 2021 • Couples
Loved Balos! It is the prettiest beach I have ever been to! Pretty pink sank and turquoise and blue waters. Elafonisi was pretty too but Balos was much prettier!

Could be windy
Feb 2021
This place has nightmarish parking places. The walk down to beach is alt not nice. Along the bad trail. It could be windy.

Beautiful beach
Sep 2020
About an hour and a half's drive from Chania (half the time was taken by the last few kms of the drive on a stony/gravel track, going very slowly).
There is a +/- 20 minute walk from the parking lot downhill to the beach (just remember you will have to hike back up!), and it yields spectacular views of the beach and lagoon. The beach itself has clear waters and is quite shallow, so safe for kids or poor swimmers like me! You are able to hire loungers for 10 euros for a pair. It does get crowded around lunch time - would recommend to get there early, as by the time we left, there was a very long queue of cars parked on the side of the winding road that takes you to the beach parking.
Personally, I preferred Elafonissi Beach, but this was nice as well.

Beautiful beach
Oct 2020 • Couples
A beautiful beach and shallow sea area which sparkles and glows when the sun shines. We visited on a boat trip having visited gramvousa first. It was October so late in the season so unfortunately balos was in part cloud for most of the time. The land mass behing balos is mountainous so cloud forms easily. Nonetheless on a beautiful day it should be stunning., my main reservation is the crowds , it was busy in Oct., I imagine in summer it will be mobbed. Dont try to access by car unless you have a good 4wd and be prepared to descend a small mountainside to the beach and an ascent when you leave.

Beautiful day!

I took a cruise to Balos and Gramvusa from Kissamos port.
It’s easy to get to Kissamos port from Chania - there is a public bus in the morning leaving just on time to be there before the cruise. The same bus meets the boat in the evening. You can buy bus ticket onboard.
I booked online ticket for the cruise but you need to still pay the national park fee, so you would be in the save queue - count with it.
The lagoon is incredible ... amazing water and sand... just wow. I saw a ray in the sea which was fun... brings Balos even closer to Bora Bora feel :).
In COVID time + October, it was not crowded. Before you go it’s best to check the wind - if there is a strong Western wind - maybe choose another day. I got this tip from a local fisherman - you can check wind up to 7-10 days in advance, so it’s ok for planning.
I would love to visit again.

A very good advertised place with no equivalent status.
The pollution and the crowd make the place disgusting.
There was an harship to arrive there and the place did not ';repaid'' us
I am very sorry.
That could be a special place.
