We did the Table Mountain Platteklip Gorge hike tour and strongly recommend for anyone looking for a guided way to summit Table Mountain! Our guide Kathy was excellent. She was very knowledgable about the mountain, its history, and the flora and fauna we saw along the hike. She was also indispensable in helping guide us safely up the Platteklip Gorge, and especially on the way down as weather conditions became wet and windy and prevented us from taking the cable car. And of course the views on the top were absolutely worth the trek, truly some of the most stunning views I've ever seen! That said, definitely a fair warning to those considering going that weather conditions change quickly, so be prepared to hike down if the cable closes. Abseil Africa made the booking smooth, and Kathy was very communicative in the days leading up with information on where to meet and what to bring. If you're willing to brave the hike, Abseil Africa is a great option to help guide you along the way!

One of the best and most thrilling views of Cape Town is rappelling from the top of the iconic Table Mountain with Abseil Africa!
We've been rappelling before, but this takes rappelling to a whole other level. Abseil Africa is a 1000 meter rappel with beautiful views of the beach and mountain coastline below. Our rappelling guides, Warren and Owen, made the entire experience so fun and safe. Anytime you are planning on bouncing off the side of a 1000 meter mountain, you want to make sure safety is the #1 priority. Abseil Africa uses 2 professional rappelling ropes that hold a total of 5 tons! (So even if you had a big breakfast that morning you still don't have to worry about the ropes holding you =) For extra safety, the guides are there to hold you so there is no chance of anything going wrong. The rappelling itself was so much fun. Bouncing off the wall is probably the closest I'll ever feel to walking on the moon.
Whether you are looking to conquer your fear of heights, or just looking for a thrilling way to see Cape Town, we definitely recommend checking out Abseil Africa on Table Mountain!

There is no denying that the beautiful views from the top of Table Mountain are simply breathtaking. But now, after my experience abseiling down Table Mountain, I can tell you: the uninterrupted views while abseiling down one of the most majestic natural wonders of the world are not to be missed.
The abseil itself is just over a hundred meters, but you step off the top at a thousand meters above sea level, making this the world’s highest commercial abseil experience.
The qualified and seasoned guides are friendly and do a great job making you feel safe and putting your mind at ease every step of the way. They show you the ropes, do a safety demonstration at the start, and from your first interaction with the team, you feel like: “these guys know what they’re doing.”
I’d say this magnificent experience is a must for real adventurers and thrill-seekers.
Remember to bring along some water for the hike back up to the top of the mountain after the abseil experience.

We did a bungy jump, shark cage diving and other similar activities in south africa but this was definitely the stand out! I wouldn't recommend it for people with a fear of heights though as I'm usually fine with them but did feel nervous doing this (even though I've done abseiling a few times before). The location is just amazing and we had a blanket of clouds below us as we started our descent which made it even cooler. The guys were all very reassuring and it was all very safe (the challenge us just telling your mind that!). One suggestion would be to get soneone to take a picture from a side angle if possible with cape town in the background. The pictures/videos the guys take from the top don't do it justice as there's some ledges below. Still awesome to do though and highly recommend. Takes about an hour including the c30 minute walk back up to the top

I had the most amazing experience, hiking & abseiling at Gordon's Bay.
It is not for the faint hearted. I have never abseiled before, but it was well worth the experience:)
I would like to say a big thank you too Gavin, Howard and Bongani for making us feel safe.
We also got to meet the local baboon which was a bit of an experience.
The trip starts with breakfast, followed by a hike (up a mountain) a dip in the rock pools, then the abseil.
After this you get the opportunity to enjoy the rock pools again and the option to jump into them before heading back to the Pitt Stop, which is a lovely restaurant:)

For someone who was soooo afraid to do this (and terribly afraid of heights), this was such an amazing experience and the guys made me (and the group) feel very very safe. The views are incredible and even the hike back through India Venster is something amazing. I would recommend this over and over again and would totally do it many more times!

My wife and I literally took the plunge and went abseiling in August 2011. We were fortunate to have been able to go up Table Mountain as we only had 4 full days in Cape Town and had rain on 2 days and the mountain was closed on the third day due to overly windy conditions. The Abseil Africa team was professional and clearly taught us how to use the equipment and assured us that we would be safe, particularly as we had no climbing experience whatsoever. My wife and I are not outdoors-type people, and therefore going abseiling was a big deal for us. The descent was terrifying and exhilirating, but we were surprised by the rather treacherous trek back up the mountain.
As the abseil scent goes down only 112 m., you have to trek back up the mountain to catch the cable car down. The spot where you land after the descent connects with the dangerous trek down the mountain, so going down is not feasible except for the most experienced climbers. The Abseil Africa staff will say that the trek back up will only take around 30 minutes and is relatively straightforward, but it really isn't, particularly for inexperienced climbers (and Abseil Africa markets itself as requiring no experience). Abseilers make the trek back up alone, as no Abseil Africa team member accompanies you back up. There are portions of the trek which are quite dangerous, where you are literally at the edge of the mountain, where one slip could send you tumbling down to your death. Morever, there are no signs whatsoever along the trek advising you where to go, except for the sign close to the summit which warns those going down that this was the DANGEROUS route down the mountain.
I was horrified by the other review here about the couple whose husband suffered a heart attack during the trek. They were very fortunate that there were other climbers they could seek assistance from. If there were no other climbers, there would have been no way for the Abseil Africa team to learn that there was an emergency.
There should at least be one Abseil team member who accompanies abseilers along the trek up the mountain to ensure they return to the summit safely. If manpower is a problem, abseilers can be assembled at the landing point while everyone completes their descent before the whole group makes the trek back up.

OK, first of all, don't book for abseiling because these guys probably won't respect the given time, so if you really want to do it even after reading the rest of my comment, just show up and wait for them to tell you when to go (might take about 15 minutes)
Secondly, when they say the whole activity takes 45 minutes, this means 1. put the gear on + instructions (10 minutes) 2. abseil down 112m (2 to 5 minutes depending on how quick you are) 3. Oh yeah, if you hike down 112m, you need to hike up 112m as well (30 minutes).
So basically, your real activity takes less than 5 minutes and with a fare of R750, this means you pay R150 per minute.
Also, when you sign the booking form, they will ask you if you want a T-shirt or a cap. If ever you check yes for one of those and then change your mind, they will force you to pay for the item because you've already checked it.
Waste of money. Totally ripped off.

I had mixed feelings on this and am writing a review to warn people..as I feel I should have been warned and advised as to what was ahead.
I did the abseil on a whim..I have done a couple before near ground level, but this is something else. It is very high up! Six of us did it, and 4/6 of the people freaked out doing the abseil, it really is not for the faint hearted.
The abseil itself...safe, breathtaking, terrifying. I have vertigo, but regardless did a skydive and this abseil to try and conquer my fears and to have a challenge.
We had to wait for about 45 mins sitting on the cliff edge, whilst the various people ahead of me lost the plot and took an eternity to get down. This was a personal nightmare for me being afraid of heights! We were however harnessed so it was safe. The staff were friendly and relaxed.
However, the walk back afterwards: there is no guide, the path is not clear, there is no water, there are some points that if you you fall, you will die. The guy at the bottom just tells you to go in one direction, and we spent the next 30 mins alone walking the cliff in searing heat, no water, and I was wearing slip on shoes...totally unprepared, guessing which way to go. Suffering vertigo I was very close to seizing up..it was a real personal battle, and if you are nervous and afraid of heights you may be in serious trouble. I was stunned at we were not advised of this, and had a right go at them when I got back, but he wasn't interested.
So, if you don't mind heights, do it, it's intense, exhilarating, scary, exciting. But wear decent footwear and take some water.
If you don't like heights, be warned, as they won't warn you. You may say its my own fault for doing it with a fear of heights, but regardless, it's nice to be prepared and to know what's ahead.

Abseiling off of Table Mountain was definitely a highlight from my trip to Cape Town. Although I was nervous since I had never done anything like this before, the guides were helpful and encouraging. The key is to avoid looking down and to just enjoy the amazing views around you...I can't even begin to describe the feeling of hanging off of the side while looking over as the clouds began to cascade down the mountain!
The one issue that I had was not with the abseiling itself but the 25 minute hike back up. I abseiled alone and once I got to the bottom, a guide told me that I just had to follow the path back up to the top. By this point the winds had picked up and clouds had moved in so they were closing the abseil down. The problem was that the path was not at all marked and at times it became difficult to judge where to go since the path not only consisted of dirt trails but also climbing over large bolders. I began to get a bit nervous when the clouds starting coming in which greatly reduced my visibility. In the end, I made it back up to the marked paths at the top of Table Mountain but not without a bit of stress. I wouldn't want this to discourage anyone from abseiling since it is a great experience but it may be a good idea to abseil with someone else or wait for the next person at the bottom so that you can tackle the hike together.

Like a previous poster, I'm more anxious about the hike back up than the actual abseil. I'm in decent shape but petrified of heights if I'mnot attached to something. Ziplining, rock climbing, jumping out of a plane... No problem. Walking near the edge of a cliff where one small wrong move and I'm a goner... No so much. Can anyone convince me that I'll be alright?
Written 10 December 2018
The hike back was not bad. I am not a fan of heights but you are so focused on where you are going on the hike that you don't think of looking down. I was chatting to someone the whole time and never thought about the height. Between the conversation and concentrating on where I was walking, it went by quicker than expected.

How much time should I allocate for the abseil?
If some of the party want to abseil and some don’t, will there be enough to do while waiting?
Written 5 November 2017
Hi there, the abseil it’s self is only about 6 minutes long but it’s probably more like 20 minutes to get rigged up and safety demo etc. The hike back we did leisurely so in total we were gone a little over an hour. There’s a cafe on the mountain top and WiFi lounge. Personally I think there’s plenty to occupy non abseilers. We spent the whole afternoon on the mountain and loved every minute.

Hi; few questions.
We are planning on doing this on 01/12 - should we book in advance?
Also, for the combo package it says transport is included TO the mountain but return transport is not. How does one get back to Cape Town?
For the cable car, do I just book a cable car ticket online?
Thanks a mill!
Written 17 October 2017
For the Abseling, u can decide to do it while u r up in the mountain there is no line to wait .
Unlike the cable car, i would recommend u to book in advance b/c of the long lines, yet u can buy the tickets onsite .
For transportation I would really like to answer ur question but I used Uber and its available there with very reasonable price .
Finally, Have Fun 😍
Written 29 October 2017
Hi I would just like to know if you book a ticket online and the cable cars are not operating for example due to bad weather can you cancel the abseil and use for a different day?
Written 26 March 2017
Yes if cable cars aren't operating I can rebook. We did book online. Best crew to take photos and videos of your abseil! Cool experience

HI there
We reccommend that all clients book online, you also pay less when booking online.
However if you dont want to book in advance then please give us a call on the day to check operation status and availability before you leave for the mountain.

Hi there
When are you planning on going to the mountain? At the moment the first cable car is at 8am so its best to be there as soon as it opens. If you run late you can always just call or text/whatsapp us on +27720651520.

I read that the staff takes a photo of you before the abseil down, when you just hang there. Do they use their own camera? If so, how can you get the picture afterwards?

Hi, what time would you recommend we book the abseil? We are thinking of doing it on the 19th Dec and know it is a very busy time. We would rather do the morning just in case it's windy but are unsure what time to arrive at the cable car station in order to ensure we will not be late and miss our abseil slot.
Also do we need to hike back up after the abseil in order to get the cable car down or is there a mid station?
We were thinking about coinciding this with a tour to Robben Island at 3pm but I am unsure if this will give us enough time, what is your opinion?
I'm sorry about all the questions but unfortunately I can't access your website at the moment for some reason.
Thanks
Anna

Hi, we booked a 10am slot and got to the cable car for 9am...the queue was already ENORMOUS !! We got up in time though. We had to meet people about 1pm, and still had plenty of time to do the abseil, walk back up, take lots of photos and grab some lunch before heading down. You do need to go back up in order to get the cable car down, but I'm sure you will have plenty of time. I hope you enjoy it, it's great fun.

I abseiled Table mountain as a fit and healthy 15 year old in 2000 and loved it... I'm now 32 and after a serious accident I'm a below knee amputee (who also suffered significant spinal injuries-lucky not to be paralysed... I'm coming to Capetown in 2wks time and there's a huge part of me that feels I NEED to do Table Mountain, just like I did all those years ago... It feels like quite a spiritual thing and something that would prove so much to myself to give it a go again!! Has anyone had any experience with abseiling it with a disability?? Would love to hear from you if you have!! I'm very determined!! Thank you in advance!! Kathryn Xxxx👍🏼☺️
