Visit to mountain top village was an experience. It is a traditional village for the farmers and the stock. No electricity or running water. A look into how these people have lived and still live in this remote location. Our guides were very knowledgeable and extremely good drivers as the road up to the top is very challenging. A great day out.

Thank you for reviewing our Standard Sani Pass day tour. We are delighted that you had a great day and thanks for the 5 stars! We try to give our clients a window into life in a simple Highlands village and hope that this experience will challenge a lot of preconceptions people have, both about Africa and about themselves and this will be a most enriching experience! I will pass your praise on to our guides who are themselves passionate about Lesotho and its people. Glad you appreciated the difficulty of the driving conditions and their expertise in dealing with them!

My family (parents and 11 year old son) just got back from a day trip to Lesotho with Drakensburg Adventures. Tsebo, our guide, was amazing in so many ways. Here are a few observations about him. He is a very skilled driver, which is critical on the drive up to Sani Pass! He has a deep understanding of the culture of the Lesotho people and was happy to share it with us. We saw this in the myriad of interactions we had with people along the way, from driver to driver, with the shepherds we talked to and with the delightful woman who welcomed us to her home for lunch. Tsebo also knows a ton about the flora and fauna. He also has a good sense of humor and is a fun, curious guy.

Overall it was a great trip. I wish we would have had more time (multi-day rather than just one). Drakensburg Adventures is spot on in how it engages with local people.

Thank you for this most insightful review and the 5 stars! We have a special team of freelance guides who we work with and are delighted you had such a wonderful time with Tsebo. Not only that, but that you were able to identify and appreciate his special qualities! We have passed on your praise to him! On our Standard Sani Pass day tour, we have tried to set up an experience filled with interesting and varied people to meet and places to go. Of course, a day trip is limited, and we hope one day to be able to take you on a longer trip to explore further the incredible place which is Lesotho!

We stayed in an en suite Rondavel which was brilliant. Clean and comfortable. So glad we booked the evening meals as they were excellent value in the restaurant. The staff are very welcoming and look after their clients. Booked the day trip up the Sani Pass and Dan our driver was excellent, he has a love of the area and is very personable. No rush, enjoy the day and experience the people of Lesotho as much as you can on a one day trip.

Thank you for great review and the 5 stars. I have passed on your praise to our staff. We try and give good solid value for money in all we do, in our accommodation, our restaurant and our tours. As Drakensberg Adventures, we have tried to set up a day tour which gives visitors to Lesotho as much of a “taste” of the country and its people as is possible in so short a time. The day’s itinerary has been carefully set up and we are glad you appreciated this. We have passed your praise on to our guide Dane. We hope to be able to show you more of this special place in the future.

During my stay at Sani Lodge in December 2018, together with Drakensberg Adventures I undertook the 5 day tour "Roof of Africa" to Lesotho. My tour guide was Mondli, whom I highly recommend. He has a great knowledge of the country and its people, is very familiar with flora and fauna, is a great driver, speaks very good English, has a good relationship with the people of Lesotho and always has a smile on his face. You simply notice his passion for his job! I recommend to book direct to Mondli as a guide!
The tour itself was great. The scenery is breathtakingly beautiful, the people are incredibly friendly, the attractions, activities and accommodations were very good. The drive to the Sani Pass is an experience in itself. Thanks to Drakensberg Adventure for the great organization of the trip.

Thank you for this comprehensive review and your 5 stars to us. Your experience mirrors exactly what we try to create on all our tours into Lesotho. The country is physically spectacular, the people warm and genuine and our guides are all highly knowledgeable and passionate about their work and about Lesotho. Mondli is one of our team and we are delighted you had such a wonderful time with him and have passed this on. We hope you return one day and allow us to show you more of the magical “Mountain Kingdom”.

Matthew took our family up the Sani Pass and into Lesotho. He was so knowledgable and passionate about the area and and clearly had a good relationship with the local people. We felt safe and in good hands the whole time. We were able to ask any questions and we felt we learnt so much. It was good visiting the highest pub in Africa, but also to go on to the highest point in Africa and to visit a lady living in a rondavel and learn about the family’s life. Can’t recommend this day tour highly enough.

Thanks very much for this review. We have set up and operate tours which we think will offer visitors a unique and unforgettable experience. Our guides are a major part of this, and so often go unrecognised. We therefore especially appreciate your words about Matthew, one of our team of excellent freelance guides who work with us. Matthew has been a guide on the Pass for over 10 years and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the table. Every trip is special for him, and he does his best to ensure that every client on every trip gets the maximum enjoyment out of the day he spends with them. We recognise and appreciate the superb service he gives, and are delighted that you have recognised this too. The hike to Hodgsons Peaks from Sani Top is a superb day, allowing a variety of experiences including the 4x4 element driving up Sani Pass, the cultural element encountering Basotho shepherds and their flocks along the route and of course, stunning mountain scenery as you cross the alpine plateau and scale the peak to enjoy your lunch with a 360 degree view unparalled!!

I did two tours with Drakensberg whilst staying at Sani Lodge, both with Christine who was a great guide. I was impressed by the way in which everything was organised and the thoughtful set up of the tour company, as they clearly are thoughtful and sensitive about giving something back to the local communities.

Thank you for your comment, Dave. We have tried hard to build positive relationships with communities so that they can see benefits from tourism which can be a double edged sword!! Our community tourism initiatives in Lesotho have been recognised as "Best Practice" by the Lesotho Tourism Development Corporation, and they have required all companies operating in this area to follow the same principle we use. We also endeavour to ensure that all the guides we use are passionate about what they do and have a deep knowledge about their subject. "Pay peanuts, get monkeys"!

We did two hikes with Drakensberg Adventures as part of our package at Sani Lodge. The first was a hike to Hodgsons Peak at the top of the Sani pass - the drive up was quite an adventure, not to be missed, in itself. The second was a hike to the paintings of the Bushmen. Both were lead by Dane, who was knowledgeable, fun, chatty, understood the needs of the groups and gave us options. Highly recommended

The road up to Lesotho was horrendous. Not a pleasant experience at all. The guide Mathew loved the sound of his own voice and had an opinion on everything and everything. Some of his information was great and we did learn things about Lesotho that we wouldn't have otherwise. The village visit was interesting.

The road up the mountains called Sani Pass is indeed in a most shocking state currently. It spans an altitude gain of 1000 metres over 8 kilometres. The floods due to heavy rains over the past rainy season has seen mountain mud slides and rock falls so the Sani Pass road has taken tremendous strain . It is the Department of Transport in South Africa who is responsible for the road maintenance but they seldom do anything. In fact over all the years, it has been up to the Basotho people coming down the Pass and tour guides themselves who repair the road when they can and all by hand without machinery. So what you experienced is a neglected road in Africa ; real Africa! And not a tarred road in Europe. You can imagine what a road in that condition does to our vehicles on a daily basis. Well when the road is concreted and all the beautiful trees and rocks and birds no longer along the sides of the road, the road will be smooth but the experience mirrored by any mountain pass in the world; manicured, sanitised, altered and flora and fauna gone forever. You were lucky to experience it in its raw state with the beautiful rare birds sitting on the old, rare vegetation and wild flowers alongside the road. It forces one to slow down in life and enjoy the beauty of the surrounding awesome mountains. Driving fast along a concrete/tarred road does not lend itself to going slowly ,drinking in one of nature's wonders. And you also have a story to remember for life which you will tell your grandchildren about. They will be so envious to hear about your real adventure . Drakensberg Adventures has two guides called Matthew. One was born in Lesotho ,speaks fluent Sesotho and knows the country like the back of his hand . The other is a highly experienced, knowledgeable guide who imparts information that guests need to know about the unique country of Lesotho and its special people. There are tours you can do with other companies where the guide does not impart any information at all and you simply reach the top of the Pass for a beer in the Pub. You will pay more for these tours and learn nothing about Lesotho and Basotho culture nor learn how to engage respectfully with the Basotho people. It is entirely your own choice as to how you wish to spend your travels and engage with people in a foreign land. Travelling broadens the mind but only if you allow it and listen to what others have to say about a topic you know nothing about. Glad that you did learn something about Lesotho from your trip and that is what travelling is all about so you did benefit from your tour which is the aim.

Thank you for your review. Matthew William is indeed a most excellent guide and has been guiding for Drakensberg Adventures for many years. His knowledge and experience is unmatched and his understanding of the Basotho culture and people is profound.
