You can drive to the lake with a standard rental car, no need for an ATV. There are some rough road bits, but we had no issues, you just have to go slow. There's a barrier and car park, we were asked for a voluntary donation to go through, and gave a couple of dollars.

Like everything in El Salvador, it's really clean, there's some tables for pic-nics and some small shops and toilets ($0.25, didn't use them). You can walk all around the lake, which is actually a volcano crater! The walk took around 20-25 min at a normal pace. You're surrounded by greenery and the hills are stunning. If you have a car worth spending a bit of time to visit Laguna Verde (= Green Lake, due to its colour). You can read about the local legend if you Google it.
