If you visiting Arniston, you cannot leave without popping into Kassiesbaai, its a tiny fishermans village on the sea side, so peaceful and beautiful, it also has a very nice beach if you like to take long walks or swim. The little village is full of small white cottages which is where the fisherman used to stay, today a few of them are rented out as homes and one or 2 are now running as a Bed and Breakfast and restaurants or tiny stores, where you can purchase small arts and crafts made by the locals or a quick delicious meal, colddrink, etc. Our favourite restaurant and I highly reccomend it is WANDA's for lovely freshly made seafood.

We arranged via the Arniston Hotel to have dinner at the Auntie's Kitchen - in a house in Kassiesbaai. Local cuisine made with recipes that have been in families for many years. Take your own drinks, and go for the experience.

We discovered Mien's Tea Garden in Kassiesbaai where we had lovely meals. Mien is one of the locals and she prepares food for you in her cosy home. We had lunch the first day, my calamari was the best calamari that I had in a long time. We went back the next morning for breakfast. It was so interesting talking to her and her husband about the village and its history.

Kassiesbaai has had many fishermen’s homes bought & refurbished for holiday rentals & this is what we expected when we booked after reading about the place.
We left only an hour after arriving as we could not stay. We were booked and paid for 3 nights.
In the heat of February it was impossible to stay. We were told by the host as we started trying to open windows that they did not open, and it was unsafe to open them anyway due to the crime. She said too, that the only window that opened wide, in the one bedroom, must be shut at night when we sleep due to crime. No fans to keep one cool either. The window mechanisms, all but 2, were so corroded that they could not open, or had been sealed off.- it was impossibly hot & stuffy. The stoep had only a collapsed broken bench, no other seating or umbrella & the ‘braai’ room indoors had every window sealed off. There was no portable braai to use outside & 2 broken or filthy grids.
This cottage was dirty, hot and and an uncomfortable place to be with locals knocking on the door asking for money or car wash only a short while after arriving. There was 1 roll of toilet paper for 6 people & no bath towels. When I asked I was told that it is ‘self catering’ & the email stated this!
We are frequent travellers who always stay in self- catering, which in our experiences means ‘supply your own food & we will provide all the facilities therefore, including dishwasher etc’
We have never been in such an atrocious place.

This should be refurbished and made acceptable before owners attempt to hoodwink people into renting.

We visited Arniston for a few days, we’ve been going for years and I can honestly say Mien’s breakfast was the best I ever had in Arniston. I would drive all the way from Cape Town to eat there! Amazing food, amazing prices and amazing owners! Love to hear their stories about Kassiesbaai! Salt of the earth people!

If you are wanting to visit an authentic Cape fishing village, then look no further! This is no artificial settlement built to rake in tourists, but a real working community, focussed on fishing, which has been in existence long before the word "tourism" was invented. It was an interesting experience to wander round and take in the sights - some of the humble homesteads could do with a bit of TLC, whilst others had been lovingly maintained. Time hasn't exactly stood still here - the abundance of satellite dishes and TV aerials are testimony to that, but the lifestyle and dependency on fishing is still the driving force of this charming seaside settlement.

This is a must if you're going to Arniston, or even if you have to make a detour. We took a walk through the beautiful houses and ended up eating at one of the local restaurants Well worth the visit.

In May 1918 a convoy of British East India ships was heading around the Cape to repatriate wounded soldiers from Ceylon. The sea was rough and the weather was foul. The Arniston lost sight of the convoy in the unrelenting sea. Believing they were off St Helena Island the captain decided to beach and wait out the storm. He was wrong. The Arniston crashed onto reef meters from Waenhuiskranz beach. Of the 378 people on board only 6 survived. The village of Waenhuiskranz became known as Arniston. Kassiesbaai, a historical fishing village lies to the east Arniston slipway. The whitewashed thatched houses are a National Monument, of the working fishing village, the only ones remaining in South Africa. The Fishermen's Union controls the building of houses in traditional style and has twice been successful in preventing relocation. The beauty of this village lies in the authenticity and naturalness of the originality.

This little village reminded me of a Scottish fishing village so felt right at home and loved exploring it. Visited a little craft shop then came upon a restaurant called Willeens run by Diana which had tables outside with a wonderful view of the beach. Great seafood or toasted sandwiches and a lovely place to enjoy some of the local wine. Felt very safe to wander around. Watch out for the jellyfish on the beach.
