We went and looked at blown glass shops and had ice cream fun for the whole family. Stopped by the Catholic Church for mass on way home

Makawao is a small town in upcountry Maui with many art galleries (photos, jewelry, sculpture, carvings, art prints, clothing...) and several restaurants. It is considered a paniolo town (Hawaiian cowboy)... Some of the eating spot highlights of the town are the Komoda Bakery, Polli’s Mexican...More

Cute and quirky mountain town! Winding drive up from Kahului leaves you in a boutique lined street with some interesting finds. Hot tip: It's actually COLD up there in the evening shade, so bring a windbreaker at least.

I was not impressed with Makawao however I suppose that is because I was expecting more and it just was not there. Wares are expensive there so be careful. I suppose a large part of it was there were no activities going on at the...More

Makawao Town is in the Upcountry of Maui and a destination in itself. It is considered cowboy country. Although we didn't see any cowboys, we saw lots of horse farms outside the town. It is a great place to explore with lots of interesting shops,...More

We didn't originally have Makawao on our Maui itinerary but we met a few locals that lived here and told us that it would be a fun place to check out. We found great causal eateries and fun shops to peruse. Really lovely art galleries....More

Never had heard of this town and so glad we took a 15 min drive off the Hana hwy drive to see it. The drive is so pretty and for a day out of the sun, this is perfect. It is located higher, thus cooler...More

Makawao has a lot of little specialty shops featuring local art as well as a small selection of restaurants and places to get food. There is a small general store, as well as a bakery that has great baked goods. It is definitely not a...More

We took the local bus there and spent the morning and afternoon looking through the small stores. Glass blowing was amazing. Some great art shops. Several places to choose for lunch. We went to the Mexican restaurant called Polli's which has Mexican food but also...More

We made a side trip on our way back from Hana to visit Makawao as we read it offered locally created art, etc. from the area. Well, that was true but the people were less than welcoming. The only store where we were greeted and...More

Yes Most restaurants and stores and galleries are open seven days a week. It's fun little town. Great Mexican at Polli's. Great drinks and food also at Casa Nova. Enjoy! Maui no Ka Oi Maui is the Best!
