The center of the city is so beautiful with many wonderful stores, galleries and restaurants. El Jardin is peaceful and a great place to sit and admire the beauty of your surroundings and all of the friendly people.
There is a rougher and rougher crowd around here on weekends, so I'm not sure what to think any more. This used to be one of the safest places and loveliest places to gather in Mexico, and now it is not so. Makes me sad.
The Zocalo is an absolute must for New Year's Eve. The fireworks and light show was easily the most spectacular midnight countdown I've experienced—far better than Times Square. Difficult to put into words. Just go!
I love San Miguel de Allende and one of the main reason is the Centro region of the town. Such a fun place, great restaurants around, the beautiful church and the overall ambience makes it my top pick.

The "zocalo" is the main square of a city or town. In San Miguel de Allende it is called "El Jardín", officially "Jardín Allende". On a map you will find it in the "Centro"...the center of the town. Its address is Portal de Guadalupe 10. The street "Portal de Guadalupe is one block long, along the east side of the park. The north side is bordered by the Calle Principal. To the south is Calle Correo, and to the east is the one-block-long street "Portal Allende".
