      Guided Tongariro Alpine Crossing hike
Chris and Corbin did an amazing job as. guides taking us on this challenging hike. Safety was a priority and they made sure that everyone was comfortable before moving to the next stage of the hike. They helped us navigate windy conditions on the way up and a steep scree as we descended. One of them always walked along with the slowest member of the group, so that no one was left behind.

      Friendly company great experience
Really lovely company and loved the guided hike through tongoriro alpine pass provided lots of breaks and additional information and kit. Only downscored because the “grandad pace” they stated it would be was definitely not that slow and meant some of the group turned back after 2 hours, which was a real shame. I think they could have continued at a more moderate walking pace. But overall we loved it and would book with this company again

      Tongariro Crossing 12th March
The Crossing, with Chris as our guide, was brilliant. Blessed by decent weather and a great group, it made up for the disappointment of not being able to go to Ruahape Summit. Transfers were good, food was fantastic, and Chris was a great guide. Someone said he knew every rock, and not only could he name them, he had an adventure to tell about every one of them. Truly good day walk. If Adrift aren't the best, I will be surprised.

      Great way to access Tongariro
Guided hike with drop off at start and pick up at end of the 21 km track. The guides were helpful and encouraging. It felt like a safer way to do this hike as a solo traveller.

      Great half day in Tongariro
Our trip with Adrift Tongariro was well organised and from the talk and weather report beforehand, always had safety in mind. We had glorious blue skies for the half day but the full day people had to consider high winds coming in later during the afternoon. Although starting together the full day people had to move on ahead at a particular point and we, doing half day, could take the pace at a slower rate which suited our group. Corbyn was great at knowing when we needed to take the uphill more slowly and tactful at moving us along on the flatter boardwalks or after a break! The scenery was amazing and thoroughly enjoyed the walk even though we could not make it to the better known landmarks of the full walk.

      Mordor 🏔️ & stubborn weather
Our guide-Julie offered us a great experience, the best as she could, as we took a private tour for 2 persons and unfortunately had a very bad weather… not being able to finish the track, the weather conditions were really bad altough in the morning the sky appeared to be opening, the day was really bad, not only cloudy, but very windy and rainy. Julie did the best and we safely made half of the hike, we did't saw the great sights considering the clouds and had to return half way. Julie is really a professional guide and Adrift a top professional company, we definitely recommand them for the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. P.S. You don’t have to bother about your lunch, they provide us a lunch with snaks and everything😁

      Fantastic Tongariro Hike
The scenery along the hike was by turns immensely beautiful, colourful, barren, and stark. Our guide was a fun, very experienced guy, and had lots of stories to share along the way. He made sure we didn't leave the meeting place until each participant was adequately equipped. We were given expectations for every section of this hike. The walk was challenging in length but with the right gear and a decent fitness level very doable. Unexpectedly there were wooden pathways and stairs for part of the initial journey which eased that section of the trip. We were blessed with a beautiful day. If you like hiking and a spectacular backdrop (and the odd LOTR reference) - not to be missed.

      Walk into Mordor
The Tongariro Crossing can be one of the most treacherous hikes in New Zealand, but the guides at Adrift make it a breeze. They share their knowledge of the region to augment the sightseeing experience, and were extremely helpful when taking photos and pointing out key areas of interest. For the more tricky parts of the hike, they give expert advice on how to safely complete the walk without injury. The packed lunch option was also delicious and great value for money.

Not the experience we were hoping for but a place of beauty.
Our young guide was clearly a very nice person and enjoys walking but we had to keep asking questions the whole walk to get any information from him. He seemed uninspired and might have done the walk too many times or was very shy. You don’t need a guide for this walk at all. It’s on a path and very clear where to go as it’s circular! The walk is worth doing and lasts approx 2 hours crossing streams and with a beautiful waterfall half way. Unfortunately we were disappointed at the lack of information. Also our tour company ‘Trailfinders’ sold this tour as a ‘Sunset tour’ which it might be at some time of the year but not in January as the guide said it was too late to stay for the sunset. We note this is now called a ‘pre- sunset tour’ which it wasn’t when sold to us. In short, take your own tipple , stop when you want to stop, dip in the water if you want to and time it so you see the sun set.

      Amazing experience
We really enjoyed the hike, it was challenging due to the climbing of steep hills but the views were incredible. Our tour guides were amazing, supportive and informative. I totally recommend doing this activity!

      Hike with the pro's
I had hike guide Dave and he was an absolute champion. He was really informative about Maori stories and culture, and very supportive for slower hikers (like me!). I purchased the premium hike and got lunch included and the wrap was really tasty - there was more food than I could eat! Their boot hire was also a great option for an international traveller like me. The drop toilets are a bit gross - bring tissues! It was so great hiking with a group, everyone in my group was lovely and we were all great friends at the end of the day.

Beware - pace expectation for the Tongariro crossing is high.
The experience started well, on a bright, sunny morning, with the pre departure briefing and gear check being conducted in a professional fashion. At that time we were assured that the pace of the walk would be “slow and steady”. This, combined with the website indication of the fitness level necessary for a successful crossing, gave us confidence that we would be able to complete the crossing. However, the pace from the start was quite fast and the emphasis seemed to be on completing the walk in as close to 7 hours as possible rather than using the available time to give all party members a good chance of success. We would suggest that the information regarding pace and fitness requirements are more consistent with the expectations for this walk.

Scam artists, book with someone else.

We got an email 2 days before our tour asking us to move to a day later but saying if we couldn't, they would go ahead with the tour.

We then got a second email saying all other participants had moved to the next day and to call them.

They said the weather was not good but tocall the next day and they'll let us know if it's going ahead or not.

We get an email the next day saying it's canceled and they'll rebook us for within 12 months.

We called and asked for a refund as we can't rebook given we're on holiday for Australia. The guy on phone says they don't give refunds only rebook (terms and conditions clearly state they give a refund if they can't rebook to a suitable date). We pointed this out and he said that no refund was given as we didn't have the minimum group size. The minimum group size as again clearly stated in their terms and conditions is 2, we were a group of 2 and he says the minimum is 3.

They then tried to say we booked through someone else, despite booking directly.

They either have no idea what they're doing or are just plain trying to cheat to hold onto money. It was the director of the company himself that was giving us the runaround, saying he couldn't be wrong because he would know his own terms and conditions.

Just book with one of the other companies that offers full refund inside 24 hours

My friend and I just completed the guided Tongariro Crossing during this winter season. I must say it was a spectacular experience with Adrift Tongariro! We had a small group of 3 hikers and were very lucky to be guided with Hiro AKA our 'hero.' His professionalism and passion as our guide was incredible (5000/100); he was knowledgeable, relaxed and friendly.

The crossing was definitely not easy to hike, especially being winter, but we felt supported and Hiro did a great job with adjusting the hike to our fitness ability and paced it out. At one point my friend and I were struggling, Hiro went above and beyond the call of duty, so we could climb up the steep hill.

We were also very lucky to have stunning weather and see breathtaking views. We'd definitely come back again with Adrift, a safe and memorable experience - will request for the awesome guide Hiro again! Thank you!

I was really impressed with Adrift. Their website makes it really clear about the equipment that you need and they state on there that they check you have suitable clothes etc with you when you check in. They were thorough in checking that each person had appropriate clothing and footwear and water with them. They were also helpful in the days before the walk advising me to change my original day if I could due to the weather forecast when I contacted them. There were high winds on the day that I switched to and our guide made it clear that we may not be able to go ahead with the while walk until we had reached the deciding point and she was able to assess the conditions and how the group was coping with them. The visibility was poor in places and it was very windy on the higher part, so I was reassured at being part of a group led by people who knew the trail well. Fortunately the clouds cleared on the descent and we were all able to enjoy the views. I really recommend Adrift if you want to do the crossing as part of a guided group.

A real highlight of our trip: the Tongariro Crossing at 19.4km is not easy, but we managed it in seven and a half hours , thanks to our guide, Stewart, of Adrift, maintaining a slow but steady pace with which we could follow. Time was allowed for photos and snack breaks. Stew was informative, encouraging and excellent company.
Robyn took us to start and collected us from the finish so there was no waiting around.
Spectacular views and scenery - we had such a good day we ended up joining Stew for a further 6km sunset walk to the falls!

We were on the Tongariro Crossing Tour with a large group run by Adrift. We are not experienced hikers but reasonably fit. Unfortunately the pace was set by the Adrift guide and this in my opinion was at a fast pace with hardly any breaks. There was no chance to enjoy the scenic views as you had to try to keep up. It was a very hot and sunny day which added to the difficulty. I participated as far as Soda Springs where I decided to give the rest of the tour a miss as the pace was excessive (in my opinion). I overheard one of the rangers, who had walked behind us, telling one of our guides that we had started at a very fast pace.
With hindsight we should have carried out the hike on our own as you didn’t
really need a guide. This would have enabled us to do the hike at our own pace and enjoy the views. As we were not allowed to break away from our tour group we had no alternative but to turn back to the start as we were told that the Devil’s staircase would be climbed without any breaks. We were told by one of the guides that the group had to reach a particular point within a certain time. It was very disappointing as this tour is expensive and we felt a bit deflated that we couldn’t continue at our own pace.

I had an amazing day with Adrift Tongariro on the Tongariro Crossing. Adrift thoroughly checked our preparation, ensuring everyone in the group had the correct clothing and footwear for what started as a cloudy, wet and very windy crossing.
Our guide was superb - she judged the pace of our crossing perfectly, so that the group overall didn't struggle on the steeper sections.
Around 11.30 the weather miraculously cleared, giving us fantastic views of Mt Ngauruhoe, the Red Crater, the emerald lakes and Lake Taupo .
Thank you Adrift Tongariro for a fabulous highlight of my four weeks in New Zealand.

My friend and I booked to join a group guided trek. On arrival the weather had turned and we were presented with the option of postponing to complete the walk another day OR attempt the walk in the hope it clears up enough to finish it. We chose to chance it and despite the warnings with regards to wind & wind chill and not having the best visibility I can honestly say it was the most amazing experience regardless. As it turns out the other person on the group booking decided not to trek so we ended up having a private guided trek which was a bonus. Nothing is perfect and to me the moody vibe and being in the clouds just added a different dimension to the experience. We also had the mountain to ourselves with hardly any other hikers on the trail. We were able to make it over and with our brilliant guide Hero encouraging us every step of the way, my friend and I completed the trek in 7 hours and loved every second and every change in the weather - we had it all! I highly recommend a guided trek as we learnt so much.

Adrift are a highly competent friendly and well organised crew. They even lend you rain gear and trekking boots and poles if required and transport you efficiently to the start and end of the trek.
The trek itself is difficult but certainly doable for anyone with moderate fitness. The descent is long and would definitely not recommend anyone with infirm knees or feet.
The views and changing landscape throughout the trek are exceptional.
The guides are the real deal with very interesting stories to tell about the area landscape volcanoes and themselves which was all entertaining and informative.
I was staying at Lake Taupō a 90 minute car ride to their shop which is the meeting point. Contact Adrift as they will put you in touch with a shuttle or transport company for transport there and back.

Had a great trip with Stu, Hazel, and Robby. They were all great to work with and had an amazing day on the trail even with less than ideal weather. The team was very helpful with making the experience great for everyone, including getting those to the top who were able to complete it. Great time and great friendly staff.
