      Great local experience
The tour was great. Maweza knows so much and so many people! Bontle holds her own and will be great when she starts leading the tours. I think the way they set the tour up is perfect. It is important to see all the facets of this society and to hear the history that lead to it. I am glad they do not shy away from showing us the poverty that is a part of Soweto and South Africa. I would highly recommend this tour. The food we were given was delicious. And there was vegetarian option. The bus ride was a unique part.

      Thabo was the best guide!!!
Thabo was an amazing guide!! He was very nice and explained everything there is to know about Soweto. Soweto is a beautiful place that deserves to be more famous. Wether it is visiting Mandela house, having a traditional lunch and much more, Soweto is a must when you come to Johannesburg.

Excellent Guide - Great Bikes - Immersive but Safe
Me and my wife had an excellent tour around Soweto. Our guide was a genuinely friendly and nice guy called Mulalo. He had brilliant knowledge and very good way of presenting it. The bikes are modern and easy to ride, they allow you to see, and be properly immersed in the townships. You’re made to feel totally safe by the Guide, in what could be an in intimidating environment. It’s a pretty heavy/somber experience, but a very good and informative one. Should be coupled with doing the Apartheid Museum (also very good) if that’s what you’re here to learn about.

      Great tour. Highly recommend!!
We had a wonderful artistic stroll through Maboneng with Refiloe. He was a friendly, enthusiastic and very knowledgeable tour guide. Not only about the art, but the neighbourhood and Joburg itself. We could have walked around all day chatting about art and culture with Refiloe!! Great tour. Highly recommend!!

Great tour in a vibrant neighbourhood
Very nice tour with an enthusiastic guide in a vibrant neighbourhood full of original street art, mostly 'official' work. The guide made us feel very safe knowing all people around.

      Interesting and fun
Our bicycle trip through Orlando with our guide Thbo Mzolo was interesting and fun. We learned a lot about the history of apartheid and the Soweto-uprising in 1976. He answered all of our questions and took care of us while cycling (through the left-side-traffic).

Tour never happened due to guides never showing up!
My booking was confirmed via e-mail and shortly after I received the tickets. However, the tour guide never showed up on the day. When we called the guy he just said that they didn’t operate today. Luckily we were able to book with a local guide nearby, otherwise we would’ve driven to Soweto for nothing. I’m still waiting for the refund of my money also! Terrible experience!

      Very Worthwhile Visit
Mulalo was a great guide. He shared a lot of history, politics, and culture that I would not have learned in a guidebook. We learned so much about Soweto.

      Thorough, Informativve, and Fun
We had a great tour with Refiloe, who was both knowledgeable and eager to share his enthusiasm for Johannesburg and for the street art that we saw.

      Just do it
Refiloe was an amazing tour guide. He gave us a comprehensive way of viewing the various tags and unique signifiers of the local street artists which we continued to use during our stay in Johannesburg as we noticed street art in other areas. Highly recommend this tour!

      An introduction to Johannesburg
The Joburg CBD gets a bad wrap. With Refilwe, we asked the city for four hours, soaking up the sites and sounds. Would recommend as an introduction to the city.

An immersive, honest, and respectful tour of Soweto
We toured Soweto with Maweza and had a wonderful, informative, eye-opening time. The information and places he shared with us gave us a real feel for the township. Also, he skillfully set expectations for the tour, and ensured that we could be respectful of the people and places we visited.

Refiloe provided an awesome experience. My artistic 17yr old daugther absolutely loved it and we had the most fun. Refiloe’s knowledge of the area, the street art and artists not too mention his passion and enthusiasm made this tour a lasting memory.

      Unforgettable afternoon in wonderful Soweto
I spent an amazing afternoon with lead guide Mulalo Mphuma and Sihle Bontle (who was fantastic - shadowing Mulalo while training to be a walking guide) - I would thoroughly recommend to any visitor to Johannesburg. As a tourist from the UK in S Africa for work/ holiday - in Johannesburg for a few days, what I wanted from the walking tour was to connect in a meaningful way with Soweto (like a city in itself - 1.5million people) that wasn’t limited to a sanitised, tourist-orientated experience. I got this from this walking tour - an informative, respectful (to Soweto) and enjoyable afternoon spent with Mulalo and Sihle who are both from and still live in Soweto. The tour was personalised around what I wanted to experience - which was to get a feel for and understanding of Soweto. Mulalo gives an unflinching and honest overview of the history of Soweto in a way that ensured I could see the human side of historical facts - the racialised, racist laws that brought it into being, the struggles by the Black African majority population for freedom, the site of the courageous peaceful protest by Soweto children in 1976 that gave rise to a murderous, violent response from S.African police, as well as passing Nelson Mandela’s and Desmond Tutu’s family homes. We visited different sides of the township, from the more prosperous neighbourhoods, to the informal side settlement where people who experience the most structural barriers battle with ingenuity and resilience to make a future for themselves and their wider community. We stopped at a snack stop where I attempted to fit into my mouth a fabulous yet somewhat daunting open Sandwich - made of a tall slice of bread, chips and various bbq meats slathered in delicious sauces- larger than my head! Mulalo recommended eating through some of the chips first to reduce the enormity of the task… I did my best to devour it all. From a high point we overlooked the surrounding hills, on one of which was the Cape Town University Soweto campus, where Soweto students can attend without having to travel great distances from home. We also passed through an enormous, bustling shopping mall - full of every modern/ luxury item you could want - frequented by the shoppers all from Soweto. Mulalo and Sihle were keen to pass on an insight into a Soweto as a nuanced, varied place that is energetic and creative despite all the structural barriers they still face. I can’t recommend enough! Thanks both of you for an unforgettable afternoon.

      Unique and memorable tour
I highly recommend the tour with Maweza, he was very knowledgeable and friendly. We got to know the area quite well, with its history and people. During the tour, we were shown houses of Tutu and the Mandela couple, in addition to learning about their lives. It wasn‘t terribly in depth, so even for an impression it‘s worth going. After the tour, I picked up details from the internet. The tour operator never responded on tripadvisor or sent any message re starting point, which I found confusing re list of starting points on here and people saying it‘s the Pietersen museum. Same happened to another person, so we waited and called the company ultimately; the others had met at a coffee shop opposite the museum. I‘m also in two minds about visiting the basic settlement - it was good to hear from their community leader and to speak to an inhabitant however a bit awkward re tips as everyone we met stressed for us to please give what we can and the little traditional merchandise layout at the end was especially uncomfortable as we were being pulled in every direction to come and buy. Children kept following us asking for sweets too which we didn‘t have with us. Rather than giving here and there awkwardly I‘d prefer for the operator to say x amount of your total cost goes to their projects - I‘d be more than happy to pay a premium.

I really recommend the tour if you are an art lover or someone looking for unique and not typical experience traveling Cape Town. Besides,it’s time&cost-effective! Not only appreciating artworks on the street of current artists, it had personally deepened the overall understanding of issues hidden behind the highlight of Cape Town. And it was impressive to feel the vibe from the host Sipho that he has so much passion on local art based on his great storytelling skills. It would be one of the moments hard to forget during the trip to Cape Town.

This is one of the most stunning and unique tours I've ever gone on. One Day Africa was easy to communicate with to organize the tour and it's so rare that you get to learn about street artists. Sipho from One Day Africa shared a lot of background not only about the artists but also the Salt River community that I would never have figured out on my own. Since my first tour with One Day Africa, I've gone on additional tours such as the Cape Town Bike Tour and the Soweto Walking Tour. It always feels like you're hanging out with a friend! I did this as a solo activity.

The amount of art was astonishing! Sipho also shares a lot of great stories about South Africa and the meaning behind the art. A can’t miss activity in Cape Town

We had a great time walking the streets and exploring the beautiful street art pieces with Christian. We felt safe and enjoyed his knowledge of the community and the art pieces themselves. The street art was so stunning! He is a genuine and friendly guide, and we liked interacting and learning from him.

Remember to take with water, a hat, sunscreen, and something to take pictures with. Try to keep most of your valuables at home, just in case.

This tour was so much more than I expected! Sipho was very knowledgeable on the artwork, artists & themes and gave great insight into the meaning of the works. He also gave insight into the community and everyday life as well as how the last 2 years required creativity/flexibility of those in the arts & tourism like himself! My 13 year old daughter, who is very much into art, was impressed and will share with her classmates and art teacher.
This tour is a must and will impress you for sure! Thanks again Sipho! Appreciate your insight and positive can do energy!

This was our first tour upon arriving in Cape Town and it was an excellent introduction to the people, history and culture of the city. Our guide was very knowledgeable and he was able to provide context and history on each piece of art. We were lucky to be the only people on the tour that we booked, so it was like having a private guide. I definitely enjoyed the tour and would recommend it to anyone.

I try to hit up a street art tour in every city I visit. Often, it is a way to get to know the counter-culture of the city which is exciting. There were some impressive and inspiring pieces on this tour and our guide provided background on the people on the neighborhood and the artists for each one including the messages behind their works. Many were sponsored or commissioned pieces which can reflect the vision and hope of the community. There was some surprising (to a visitor) street art too that really indicated the politics and view of the people. It was eye-opening but also good to know where some community members stand on important issues. The commentary about subjects other than art was interesting as well and I enjoyed our discussion and tips for places to go too. I recommend this tour.

Chandy was an exceptional tour guide. His knowledge of not only the art itself but the stories behind the artists and why they chose the area was both informative, and enriching as my husband and I got to really understand some of the history of the area. Anyone looking to learn about Cape Town and its beautiful stories should book him immediately. Chandy will NOT disappoint

Great, impressive and meaningful street art, a guide who not only gave us insights into the street art but also into the country and its people with very interesting conversations about "God and the world". Highly recommended to experience a different side of this great city. Thank you Terrence(?) for the great afternoon.

I enjoyed seeing the art and hearing the meanings and stories behind the murals. I gained insight into some of the concerns of the community and even the country. Our group was so engrossed in our tour that we lost track of time.
