Loud obnoxious guides
The guides from Poinciana are very loud and rather obnoxious. It's hard to enjoy the natural beauty of the area when the guide is constantly yelling.

Toughest/most strenuous hike ever - but worth it
Jan 2020
We were only in a group of 3 w Poinciana, our guide was Syl who was excellent. There were 2-3 other groups all w Poinciana as the guides knew each other. There was a large group of 22 Germans from a cruise ship who went at a decent pace but with only 3 we moved fast. We covered the ~5.5 mi RT / 2200 Ft vertical gain from 930-200p

Syl gave us good interpretation along w his reggae music, he had sweet rolls and passion fruit juice at the top. It was a bit foggy but it hardly mattered it was a great accomplishment. Syl accurately described the hike with the 3 hills. It was REALLY strenuous with all tree roots and rocks, you need sturdy shoes. I am a 61 yr old and fairly fit and I was sore afterwards. You really need to watch your footing especially on the way down. My 30 yr old reasonably fit daughter did fine

The hike made Inspiration Point in Zion and other western hikes seem easy since mostly flat but steep trails... the hike gives you a GREAT perspective on the region, Syl even showed us a monkey in a tree and monkey traps. Thank god there was a little stand selling Carib's at the bottom! Do it instead of being lazy around the pool every day!!

False Advertising - "Small Group" is a lie
Jan 2020
This should have been a 5 star experience. The four of us are in good shape, and we were ready for a very aggressive, long and hard hike up and down the volcano. However, on Viator, the description listed that we would be part of a “small group” making the climb. In fact, the group was 33 people, with 3 guides. Our main guide, Hilton, was apparently responsible for 27 of the 33. This is a ridiculous, and dangerous, arrangement. Rapidly, the group fractured into a faster set of people, and a slower set. Hilton told those of us in the faster group how to proceed, and then we were on our own thereafter for a while until he eventually caught up. This arrangement mostly worked, and we made it to the top in just over 2 hours - it was as difficult as advertised, but quite fun. Unfortunately, with this many people at the top, there was almost no room to stand, let alone sit and recover. We all took turns getting our photos and selfies with the caldera in the background, but we didn’t descend the 600 ft. into it (disappointing). The problems really began within 5 minutes of starting the descent. A woman who injured her knee 2 weeks prior (and shouldn’t have been hiking in the first place) blew out her medial meniscus, and couldn’t walk. Most of the people in the hike needed to descend rapidly to get back to their cruise ship in time - so almost everyone continued with 2 of the tour guides on the descent. 5 of us were left to act as Good Samaritans, and helped the woman and her husband (and the 1 remaining guide) over the next 3.5 hours of descent ... she had to be carried down. We all took turns, and it was a very dangerous experience - fortunately nobody else was injured slipping on rocks and mud. Overall, what should have been a magnificent experience was just the opposite - horrible.

Much more difficult than anticipated
I am a decent 63 year old hiker who hikes regularly and thought this sounded like a good challenge. It turned out to be more difficult than I anticipated. Going up was difficult, but I made it. Coming down was not a good time. I ended up straining my quads so badly that I was barely able to walk, much less go up or down stairs, for 4 days. This put quite a damper on the rest of my vacation. So for those 50+ in not super fit shape you might want to think twice about this hike.

Awesome but strenuous activity
Jul 2019 • Couples
My adult daughter and I hike the volcano with Roger's eco tours. Our guide, Shamika and one other gentleman comprised our group. The hike was on the top of my list of St Kitt adventures but wasn't sure if my 60 year old knees could take it. It was a beautiful but strenuous hike. Gym shoes was adequate and I did bring hiking poles with me which were very beneficial. Our guide did have hiking sticks available. While the view at the top was beautiful, the journey up was spectacular. Shamika provided us with plenty of rest stops along the way and was very knowledgeable about the flora and fauna. We saw several monkeys and hummingbirds. She identified plants and their uses. We even tasted some fiddleheads. I would highly recommend this tour but make sure you wear proper footwear, bring water and a snack, and be in reasonable shape. Oh, and some ibuprofen!

Amazing view, guide let it down
Jul 2019 • Couples
After reading the other reviews on this we (my partner and I) were expecting a strenuous hike on this trip, as we do a lot of hiking at home. But the hike exceeded that high expectation. It was tough, mostly because of the fact of the heat was so high and the ground so slippy. I myself fell twice on the roots and really hit my shin hard creating quite a bruise that’s still there 2 weeks later. Due to this most of the time we were walking you were focusing on where to put your feet rather than the stunning views.

This brings me to the guide. Our guide set off at such a high pace that we really struggled to keep up. He didn’t really tell us any faunal tips or knowledge just seemed like he really didn’t want to be there. Both of us questioned whether he was in fact high. To be honest it was like going up on our own. I wasn’t expecting an expert but it would have been nice like another review says for a few titbits. He also spent most of the hike on his phone. We passed a few other groups with guides on the way up who on the two minutes it took to pass them the guides had told us more about the fauna than ours did, pointing out different types of tree and saying funny stories and keeping people motivated.

On the way down we gave up on trying to keep up with our guide, instead we decided to walking at our own pace and stopping to drink water and take photos on the way down. Our guide for most of this time was so far ahead that actually we couldn’t see him for most of the way down, instead figuring out for ourselves where the path went. In the end the hike took us 4 hours total which is quite impressive. The reason I gave it 3 stars was for the views and the stunning rainforest and the reason it isn’t 5 stars is because of the guide. I would do this tour again because it was quite impressive and the views and rainforest were stunning but I would definitely specify the guide.

Great hike, loved it!
We had Andre as a guide. He was very informative about the area and hike. The hike itself was great with steep area of roots to climb then rocks at the top. Definitely use a walking stick! The views were of the crater, which didn't look like I expected it to. We didnt see any steam but Andre said some days you can. We really enjoyed it and are glad we did this! We both wore tennis shoes and did fine. It was mostly covered by rainforest canopy so my hat and sunscreen weren't necessary.

Great hike, lousy guide
Mar 2019 • Family
As other reviews have noted, this is a rigorous hike climbing 3,000 feet in 2+ hours. The volcano and surrounding landscape is gorgeous, though you're looking at your feet a lot as you hike due to all the slippery roots and rocks you'll encounter.

I would have given this hike a five star rating, but our guide was a big disappointment. He never introduced himself or gave us any information before the hike, he simply said follow me and took off. He had no knowledge of the local ecosystem and didn't stop to explain anything related to the beautiful tropical forest surrounding us. I wasn't look for a lecture, just a few interesting tidbits would have been fine. He also left behind a husband and wife team that were struggling to keep up and several times we had to urge him to stop and wait for them to catch up.

Wonderful (but intense) guided hike up the volcano
Feb 2019 • Couples
My wife and I (both late 40's) enjoyed this hike. Jalil was a terrific guide - funny, friendly and knowledgeable. The hike IS intense (especially in short bursts like the hills), but very doable. We were with a small group (5 others besides us) and had the trail to ourselves. We wore tennis shoes which worked out great. I would not recommend Teva / sandals, but true hiking boots are not needed. Do expect to get a bit muddy (on shoes, legs and butt). There were no mosquitoes, and you are in the forest 95% of time (no sunburn risk) I do recommend a guide (the first time you go at least) ) and Poinciana tours were excellent

Lovely trip
Jan 2019
Delightful hike and the mos enjoyable thing I did on my R. C. Cruise week. Decently organized, we met and left the terminal and drove 45 minutes or so to the mountain. 8 of us started up and 6 made it to the top. 4 were oldsters (I’m 63) and they fell behind. The leader Hilton didn’t give us much colour and kept telling us to wait. Eventually we were allowed to go ahead so got there in about 1 1/2 hours. It’s beautiful at the top however there wasn’t much to see as it was cloudy and misty. De Jean took us and she was a young sweetheart and opened up a lot to the 4 of us. On the way down we passed those still still coming up. At the bottom we were met with snacks and the world’s smallest bar. I had to leave eary as I needed to get back to the ship. I was swatched out to another bus.
It is a difficult hike with lots of opportunity to twist an ankle, slip, fall, scratch legs on roots, rocks etc and conditioning is important. Most people would need about 5 hours up and down. Fantastic day and I would do it again.
