About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Rolf W0 contributionsImpossible to bookI tried to book on-line and the website would not access payment. I emailed their enquiries to make the booking and received no reply. I rang the number from the UK and got an incomprehensible person at the other end whom, although speaking English, I was unable to communicate with at all. This is a great shame given that I had had a good trip with them in 2009 and they are the most accredited outfit regarding shark conservation status and operate the best boat. I am left thinking they may not be operating any more, despite the website.Written 3 August 2023
- Z1220LCalexi0 contributionsWe didn't see a sharkAfter all morning in the water, we did not get to see a shark within 10 meters (and from the surface of the boat). The company offered us to do the activity another day, probably knowing that all the clients of that day were foreigners and most of us would not have time to do the activity again. In my case, I was leaving the next day to my country, they told me that they would call me to offer me a solution. I'm still waiting for that call ...Written 12 March 2020
- Andrey Igorevic... T0 contributionsCheeper than cheepWe came in a group of 13 people which was enough to pack the whole boat but the company added two other tourists so it was too crowded onboard. The smell of gasolin was so strong that it made many of our team members sick. The cage is quite small, suitable for three to four people max, but the company put six people every time so we kept pushing each other. After coming back to the base frozen and shaking (water was 14 degrees celcium) we waited in queue for shower for at least 20 minutes. The shower and toilet are in very poor condition, it has not been refurbished for 30 or 40 years. Finally, we were “treated” with lunch. There were two salads (enough for half of our team) and veg lasagne that I could not eat. It was probably very overcooked so it looked like a jelly consisting of 60% cheese, 35% dough and 5% vegetables. It looked disgusting and tasted like pure fat (no taste) The only positive side that we saw small grey sharks really close, there were many of them.Written 17 January 2020
- nourhanelbadry0 contributionsA lot of Fun !! No white sharksIt’s a 2.5 hours from capetown. The experience is amazing, one of a kind where you see the sharks 5cm away from you. We saw smaller sharks but no white sharks. We enjoyed this a lot. Went into the water twice, each for 10-15min. When you get out you smell like fishWritten 9 January 2020
- chrisadey41410 contributionsThink carefully before you goJust finished our trip and we are all a little disappointed. We did not see any white sharks which is the whole point of the trip hence the name of the company. I know they are wild creatures but the guides told us during they hadn’t seen a white shark in weeks which leads me to believe they only see them once in a blue moon. At £220 for 2 people it is way to pricey and for lunch there was a vegetable lasagne which was horrible. Just choose wisely before goingWritten 6 January 2020

- Bogdan O0 contributionsAmazingFantastic trip Verry Verry good guide good pick up times no waiting and also we where a bit scared we will not have enough cage time but there was plenty of time like more than half an hour total cage time. Great adventure Thank you white venture team!!Written 31 December 2019
- travelafrica920 contributionsAMAZING sightings and really friendly crewWe had an amazing time with the crew of White Shark Ventures and we saw about 10 sharks at one time at the boat. I would definitely recommend you go with this company as they also put a lot of effort and money into research of the great white. They are very well educated and know a lot about the sharks. Great experience!Written 29 December 2019
- d0minic00 contributionsThe Jaws tripThis was the trip of a lifetime, I finally got to see a great white shark up close. The day started with a two and a half hour drive which was a little bit tiring. But we were given breakfast and a very informative briefing. The staff were very knowledgeable and instructive and the gentleman who gave the briefing was very friendly. Safety was very high on the priorities. We went to sea. After about 25 minutes we dropped anchor and the sharks soon showed up. We had lots of oportunities to take pictures from the deck, and then it was our turn in the cage. What a thrill, the adreniline was pumping. It was a bit tricky trying to take pictures with one hand while holding on with the other and holding my breath but I got a few good pictures. We spent about two hours at sea and then returned for some well earned lunch. A totally fantastic day, many thanks to all at shark ventures (sorry the only name I remember was Edger). Regards Dominic O'Brien.Written 9 December 2019
- J8101XDlaurentm0 contributionsWhat an experience !!Great experience with Dwight’s team. We really enjoyed it. The crew was reassuring, highly professional and took the time to teach us about the sharks habits. We can really see they are passionate about the subject and want only good to the sharks (which are really not considered how they should) We saw almost 20 bronze sharks and 1 white shark. (Nature gets its way) Only negative point: 2,5 hours drive from Cape Town but worth the time !!! Cherry on the cake: they have a sustainable policy and a ecotourism certification. Thanks a million for this great momentWritten 2 November 2019
- ivywong0 contributionsGreat experience. Well organisedThe activity was well organized. Staff were very professional. we managed to see many sharks. It would be better if there were more shower facilities to reduce the waiting time.Written 29 October 2019
- David W0 contributionsDon't be scaredAn excellent, ethical Shark Dive operator. Really freindly helpful crew, some of the cost is re-invesetd into helping the sharks survive. We had a good briefing beforehand, short trip out to the site, excellent cage dive facilties, saw lots of Bronzies and a couple of Great Whites, a really enjoyable couple of hours.Written 27 October 2019
- Daniel J0 contributionsTruly memorable and educational excursionWe were collected from our hotel in Cape Town and driven to Gansbaai for the cage dive. From start to finish it was well organised (using what's app prior to pick up), safe and extremely educational. All the staff were knowledgeable and dedicated to preservation and teaching about the sharks and the ocean environment. Breakfast and lunch was provided which was an extra bonus.Written 11 October 2019
- dnzcnk0 contributionsBreathtaking experience!!First of all, the manager and the staff was really professional as well as respectful to the nature. We were convinced that they really love the ocean and invest in protecting it. We were given very comprehensive (almost documentary level) info about the environment and sharks. The safety orientation was also perfect that we had no second thoughts while diving into the cage. Our booking had be cancelled twice in two consecutive days because safety is first; but the communication was so perfect and timely that we managed to find alternative programs in the meantime and we could get on the boat on the third day even though we had to drive all the way back from Cape Town (totally worth it!!!). It should also be mentioned that the staff’s handling of the sea-sickness was really professional and comforting. We learned that there is no total prevention from or cure to the sea-sickness so you don’t need to feel weird even if you are effected by the motion. So, do not hesitate; just dive and enjoy!!!!!Written 25 September 2019
- Tom1108990 contributionsExcellent cage diveAmazing day, up to 12 bronzes at 1 time, did see 3 great whites, biggest around 3 metre, other two were a bit smaller, at least 2 dives in the cage. The sharks were coming right up to side of the cage, all staff on and off the boat were very helpful and polite, overall really good day outWritten 20 September 2019

This was an amazing experience that everyone should have! This experience is 100% safe and you don't need to know how to swim to participate! The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable! The transportation to and from the facility was very convenient and safe. The van was comfortable. You get a lot of time in the cage and get the opportunity to see a lot of sharks! My group was fortunate enough to see a sting ray, seal and some dolphins as well!

I can't say this enough - this was a trip highlight on a dream vacation. To actually see a great white shark ... and many of his smaller Copper Shark friends ... up close and personal in the Great White Shark Capital of the world was incredible. Any lover of Shark Week should do this dive.
I had already resigned myself to the fact that white sharks weren't as prevalent in the area because of Orcas killing them ... so when the first shark we saw as we dropped anchor was a 14-ft white shark, I couldn't believe it! She was a beauty! And then to get in the cage and come literally face to face or face to tail was outstanding. I didn't want to leave!
A fantastic crew from start to finish! And they offer a video of the trip - buy it! You won't regret having the memories!

I was a bit dubious to chose White Shark Ventures at first due to the lower number of reviews in comparison to let’s say Marine Dynamics etc but because I had a few restrictions (such as I had to book very last minute, for the following day for various reasons), and White Ventures were the only company with availability, I booked with them (via an external company called Caleb Express Tours) but boy was I wrong to at all doubt their service. They are an excellent company inside and out in my opinion. Everything ran 100% smoothly and I have come away from the experience being thankful that I went with this company.
I am a solo female traveller of 23 (for context) and I got picked up extremely early (5.10am!!) to commence the journey to Gansbaai. I’m not sure how to spell his name (sorry!) but Ivan picked me up and was lovely from start to finish but knows that at that early time, people aren’t too fussed to chit chat and would rather rest or go back to sleep. We had a few more pick ups and then on we went to the dive shop. Once we were there, we had breakfast (there’s a big selection of food and plenty of it, so you won’t go hungry and there’s something for everyone) and then we had a safety meeting and he gave us some general info about sharks, what to expect etc etc.
Once on the boat, it was a 15 minute journey to where we anchored (as explained) and the skippers started to Chum the water. Ivan then gave everyone lots of information and facts about sharks until it was time to get ready. It’s first come first serve, so whoever is ready to go into the cage when it’s time, gets to go first but everyone gets a turn to that’s not really an issue!! If you’re not in the cage, you get a great view from the top deck anyway (what I did after my go in the cage). I went in the cage first and saw 2 GREAT WHITE SHARKS !!!!!!!!! I was so happy, such an incredible experience, you’ll love it. One was bigger and one was smaller. It took a while for them to come but once they did it was amazing. You had about 20 mins in the cage (that would be my guess... I’m not actually too sure) and then the next people went and you warmed up on the front of the bot where the sun is shining! There’s refreshments on board in case you get hungry or thirsty etc. The view of the white sharks is unbelievable from the top deck so even if you don’t fancy going in the cage, you’ll have a great time.
I went in the cage a second time right at the end of the trip as they were asking for volunteers for one last go (5 people went in the cage at a time and we had 22 people on the trip so the last ‘go’ had 3 spaces spare). I think the amount of time you have in the cage/ how often you swap over will depend on 1) how many people dive with White Shark Ventures that day and also 2) luck, how many sharks are about that day!! Although, there was about 4 other boats out on the same day as us and apparently while we were lucky and had pretty much continuous shark action throughout the trip, the other boats were a bit unlucky. So unlucky in fact that towards the end of our trip, a boat came to join next to us to try their luck in our area of the sea to see if they’d see more sharks that way!
After everyone had had their turns, we went back to shore. They provide hot showers and also if you’re not too bothered about a hot shower or the queue is a bit too long, upstairs they provide hot flannels ! Then lunch is served, a hot lunch! We got veggie lasagne, cold slaw and salad. They show you the video of the day which is available for purchase and then talk you through the sharks that you saw and there is some more info about sharks, and the possibility to ask any questions that have not yet been asked/answered throughout the day although you can ask questions any time, not just at this point of the day.
Then after a bit more chill time, we headed back to Cape Town. Ivan was really nice and as it was the beginning of whale season he made some detours and stops to see if we could spot any whales, unfortunately we had used up all of our luck with the sharks but a very nice extra attempt to make our day even better !! The views were beautiful too. Most people slept on the way back and we got into Cape Town just after 4pm. So it’s a full day!!! I was so tired after this day and all the adrenaline.
I never write reviews really unless a company really truly warrants one and I thought they provided a 5 star service and would use them again in a heart beat. I would also recommend this company to anyone wanting to go cage diving with white sharks !!!! My dad is coming to South Africa in a few weeks and I’ve told him to go with this company :)

Searched for a while for a shark cage diving experience that was invested in the environment and came across White Shark Ventures. Could not have asked for a better experience! All the staff were amazing and very passionate about what they do, i loved learning about their conservation efforts as well as fun facts about great whites. If you're going to go cage diving, support the environment by supporting these guys who are doing it in the best way possible!

I was so scared I didn't know what to expect as this was my 1st time after along time at sea, as I am really just fearful of big waters. Anyhow, we got collected in Capetown, and when we got there was welcomed with nice breakfast. The take-off and briefing were very thorough which made me to feel at ease.
We had an amazing time, we were just surrounded by the Sharks and a great site was having a Great White come to our boat and it was just exciting!
I will never forget this experience, it is my highlight of this year! All the love to the staff of White Shark Ventures.

Was an amazing experience! We had a full boat unfortunately a few people were seasick, however, we took this as an opportunity to jump back in the cage! Staff were super friendly and very informative! Didn’t get to see great whites but was still incredible to be in the water with 3.5meter bronze whalers! Definitely one of my highlights from my trip!

I highly recommend White Shark Ventures to anyone who is interested in seeing sharks in South Africa. The pickup was exactly on time in the morning and the bus was comfortable on the two hour trip. The owner does everything on the tour and provides a great safety demonstration and preview of the day. On the boat, we saw whales on the way out and back, tons of bronzie sharks, and one great white. In the cage you are literally face to face with these animals and you never feel unsafe at all. After the tour the lunch was pretty good and you get to watch a video of the day with everyone else on the tour.
