Best thing we did in Ella!
My friend and I went to Halpewatte for a plantation tour and, even though it was a public holiday so there were no workers in the fields or factory, it was an absolutely amazing experience. Our tour guide was Sallay and he was really knowledgeable and great to chat to during the tour. We got to pick some leaves for the last 20 minutes of the tour with a woman who had 35 years experience as a tea picker! Basically what we learned was that we would make terrible tea pickers haha There was also a tea tasting once we went back inside. It was really interesting to taste the teas and get to attach the information we got during the tour to the actual teas we were drinking. This plantation is only 15 minutes outside of Ella town centre so for anyone staying in the area who doesn’t want to travel the 2 hours to Nuwara Eliya this is perfect. It was one of the best things we did in Ella and I would HIGHLY recommend Halpewatte to anyone.

Exceptional Tea plantation tour with plucking experience
Salay was an excellent plantation tour guide. He explained all the grades and details of harvesting tea leaves, including interesting facts. It was good fun. We would definitely recommend him. Murugai was our on-field instructor, she was very quick in plucking the right leaves, and it was great fun! We ended it with tea tasting.

To start off, the views from the plantation were insane. Our tour guide, Sallay was delightful. He was well informed, gave excellent explanations and made the experience very memorable. He’s also a great photographer for those travelling alone 😋

Ella black tea factory with Master Siva.
If you are in Ella you must visit the tea factory. It’s really interesting to see how our tea becomes tea. Mister Siva made the experience really entertaining and easy to understand. He really is the master of tea with his 40 years of experience. Book a ticket don’t look back!

      Good trip
Good fun for a short trip out of Ella. Short but interesting talk about the tea, the leaves and the methods. Picking the tea was great fun and eye opening. Easy to take a Tuk-Tuk (15mins) there and back for around $10

We asked our accommodation about a tea tour (when in Sri Lanka..) and this is the one we ended up at. It was around 5 AUD for a tour of the facility to go through the whole process of making tea. It was actually surprising how little we knew. The tour guide was highly knowledgeable and spoke well, only got a bit hard as some of the tour was near some very loud equipment. Worth mentioning it's a full on factory with moving parts and all and based on some of the behaviours of the people in our group I'm surprised noone lost a hand, but if you use your brain a bit you'll be good. You get to taste 4 sample cups of tea, and that concludes the tour then you can purchase a whole range of stuff, they aren't pushy but you can buy most stuff in town a little cheaper.

We visited mid-morning when all areas of the factory were working. Our experienced and knowledgable guide, Sallay, explained every step of the tea-making process very clearly and talked about how different types of tea are graded. He clearly has a great passion for his subject so we now know a lot more and he may yet convert me from coffee to tea! The tour lasts about an hour and it flies by. It’s only a short tuk tuk ride from Ella and we’ll worth a visit. Thanks to Sallay and the rest of the team.

Went on two tea factory tours during our holiday and this one was by far the best as you get a tour of a factory in full operation in fact you get to walk right next to the machinery and see it all in action.

The guide provided lots of detail on the tea process and the tea tasting at the end of the tour was really interesting and there was no hard sell in the cafe and shop. Would highly recommend.

I gave this tour five stars for three reasons: first, most importantly is the guide ( Mr. S. Sivanathan) he know how to share his knowledge in a theatrical yet technical manner infusing the engineering and chemistry in tea making machine detail with anecdotal story lines. I am grateful to his devotion to share the miracle of tea making with the young generation. My grandson, age 7, from California was very interested and intrigued right through the 60 minute tour. Second, the views. Third, the tea tasting lesson at the end to understand why and how the process creates the award winning tea! I highly recommend this tour, tea tasting and tea factory experience for any curious and interested. Traveller.

Our visit to the Uva Halpewatte Tea Factory in Sri Lanka was an experience I won't soon forget. Opting for the tour that included tea leaf plucking, I was treated to an insightful journey into the world of tea cultivation and processing.

Upon arrival, Mr. Sallay warmly welcomed us and commenced an engaging explanation of the intricate tea-making process. His wealth of knowledge and clear articulation made the complexities of tea production accessible and fascinating.

Accompanying Mr. Sallay was his partner, a master of tea leaf plucking whose name escapes me but whose expertise was unmistakable. With astonishing speed and precision, she deftly plucked tea leaves, showcasing a skill honed by years of experience. Her generosity in sharing freshly plucked leaves with us exemplified the genuine hospitality of the Sri Lankan people.

Following the enlightening plucking demonstration, we ascended upstairs for a tea-tasting session overseen by Mr. Lahru. Here, amidst the fragrant aroma of freshly brewed teas, we were treated to a sensory journey through the diverse flavors and varieties of Sri Lankan tea. Mr. Lahru's expertise shone as he guided us through the nuances of each blend, enriching our understanding and appreciation of this beloved beverage.

All this was offered at a remarkably affordable price of $10, making it an accessible and enriching experience for visitors of all budgets. The Uva Halpewatte Tea Factory tour truly encapsulates the essence of Sri Lanka's rich tea heritage, offering a blend of education, hospitality, and sensory delight. It's an experience I wholeheartedly recommend to anyone seeking an authentic taste of Sri Lankan culture.

It's a short but beautiful drive from the town area of Ella to the tea factory. We participated in both the tea factory tour and the tea estate tour. Upon arriving at the tea factory, you have to walk inside and take the stairs up near the weighing scales, then follow the visitors' sign until you reach the tea shop/reception.

Each tour costs 10 USD per person. I highly recommend both tours. During the tea factory tour, they explain the origin of Ceylon Tea, the differences among teas, and guide you through the journey of freshly plucked tea leaves throughout the factory. Our guide was both funny and knowledgeable, making the tour a lot of fun.

The tour concludes at the same place where it started. They offered us the opportunity to try four different grades of black tea. It was really interesting to taste and understand the differences.

Our tea estate tour began at the cafe, and we walked for about 5 minutes to reach the tea estate. Our guide gave a brief introduction and then handed us over to a local lady who works in the estate. Then, we walked another minute or two uphill with our tea-picking baskets. Ladies received a red dot on their foreheads to match the local women. We took many photos and did some tea picking before concluding the tour.

We ended up purchasing some tea from the teashop. They offer some excellent single-estate teas

We had a great day at the Factory. We started with the Tea Plantation tour and got to pick our own tea leaves the taste the tea. The guides were knowledgeable and explained lots.

We then did the Factory Tour. It's good to note that it's only a working factory a Monday - Friday so when we visited it was not in operation however our guide Siva was so knowledable, explained so much and we got to see some of the machines in action. It also meant we could take photos too.

Tea tastings were delicious and really reasonably priced in a beautiful setting!

Fantastic tour at the tea factory.

Siva was our guide and I’ve never met anybody so passionate about tea, and he really helped to make the experience so great.

From a really in-depth lesson about tea and how it’s made, to a fantastic tour of the factory in the middle of their work... it was a great experience and would highly recommend to anybody visiting Ella.
