Fantastic tour! Our Guide Jeff was very knowledgeable and has a sly sense of humor in his delivery that made the trip memorable. He expertly put us in the middle of a large buffalo heard. The open top van was the best way to view these wild animals safely from close range.

Hi 'chuck' - Thank you for your review and I'm very happy you enjoyed your tour with Jeff. Jeff is very qualified but he 'thinks' he has the ability to find a huge buffalo herd every time . . . but like the rest of us . . . it's luck. :o) Hope you have a chance for another tour in the Hills. Unbelievable experience for my family ! Spent all day seeing all the highlights including Rushmore for an hour crazy horse for an hour but the best was driving around looking out the roof of the van at all the animals .. we saw bison, marmots, white wild goats and wild bighorn sheep, Burros, deer, and lots scenic views from the top of mount Coolidge .. even had a picnic lunch in Custer park at a lake . Jeff was fun and great ! Highly recommend it .. the best way to see it all in one day !!

Howdy jrob - The Mt Rushmore +Safari is our most popular tour. It has the most variety you will see in a single day tour. Thank you for your kind review. I'm very happy you and your family enjoyed it. I hope you will have time in the future to return to see more . . . there is lots more! Be Well - Rich

Jeff was our tour guide , he was friendly, knowledgeable, and and all around great tour guide! He took us to Iron Mtn Road, Mt Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Sylvan Lake, Custer Park Visitor Center and the Wildlife Loop and more! He told us everything about everywhere we were, so many cool facts. He went out of his way to stop if we wanted photos and to help us see wildlife since we were here off season and they were hiding. This trip was worth every penny and Jeff was an absolute delight to have as our guide! We learned a lot, saw a lot, and had fun!

Hi 669marianner . . . I'm glad you enjoyed your tour with Jeff. He is our most 'seasoned' guide and he is starting his fifth season with Open-Top. I'm happy that he found some wildlife for you to see, this time of year you never know exactly where they might be. Thank you for taking time for you kind review. I hope we have a chance to tour with you again someday. Be Well - Rich

Admittedly we booked this tour well in advance for the last day of our visit to SD, but by the day of our tour, we already had visited most of what we wanted to see in the previous 5 days. So my wife and I purposefully cut the tour short. Our guide Jeff clearly is very knowledgeable and very proud of the Black Hills and its history. Even though he wanted to make sure he gave us the whole experience as previously planned, he was polite on our request to shorten up the tour which we appreciated. After driving ourselves all over the Bad Lands and Black Hills (as well as out to Devil's Tower), it was a pleasure to be driven around in the open top van to Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Sylvan Lake and the Needles Highway. Quite frankly after driving many mountain top roads, being able to actually relax and appreciate the scenery on the Needles Highway was a gift! Jeff made sure we got all the pictures we wanted. Next time I'd try the jeep vs the van. Seems like it would be a lot more fun.

Howdy Omachel - I'm very happy you enjoyed the Hills touring with us . . . as well as self-touring. I'm thinking you must have seen most of the Hills during your stay FYI - Travelers You will need a minimum of four days to visit the four regions of the Hills. It's Big here . . . Black Hills are 125 miles by 70 miles . . . Custer State Park is 110 sq miles (biggest in the nation) . . . Devils Tower and Badlands National Parks are a 2 hours drive from Black Hills . . . Lots of things to do and see. Thanks for taking time for your review. I'll pass on your kind words to Jeff. Be Well - Rich

We had such a blast with Jeff and Open top tours. We ended seeing quite a bit more bison than I ever expected and the deep knowledge from Jeff was great for us and was very engaging for our young kids.

Additionally, they went out of their way to give us additional ideas for the other days we spent in the Black Hills and make our entire trip a great one.

We had a great day with Jeff. A knowledgeable personable retired teacher who was fun to be with in our group of 5 raging from 18-65. So much history, so much to see. It was wonderful not to have to worry about driving. It was an 8+ hour tour but the day went quickly. We would have missed a lot of scenery and interesting sites without our guide Jeff. The open top jeep was so cool too! Rich(owner)was extremely easy to work with and gave me some tips too. Thanks to both Jeff and Rich for the great experience.

Hi Emaryl - I'm very pleased you and your family enjoyed the day. The coolest tours we offer all include Custer State Park. The Park is the reason we developed the convertible-top-vans. You never need to exit . . . you just stand and get 360 views of everything. Thanks for your kind review I will pass it along to Jeff, I know he will be pleased. Be Well - Rich

Our driver, Larry, picked us up in Keystone and we were off for a fun day. Larry was very personable and provided lots and lots of good information. He really took good care of us. In addition to Mt Rushmore & Crazy Horse Memorial, we saw a lot of beautiful country. We also saw antelope, wild turkeys, wild donkeys, and lots of bison -- many up close, right next to our van. During those times, we could stand up in the safety of the van for picture taking. It was a woderful day. Thanks a lot, Larry!!

Our tour guide was Larry. While he seems like a nice person, he chews and spits chewing tobacco the entire 10-hour tour. It is absolutely disgusting to see over and over again. As some who is directly interfacing with the public, this seems horrendous to make me endure this.
Larry was a very pleasant tour guide but didn't provide the energetic and entertaining commentary that we expected based on other reviews. Unfortunately, he also speaks very softly so it was difficult to hear him most of the time. Sitting in the back, we missed 85% of what he said as he only used the mic once. He also only spoke when asked a direct question.
There was no overview of the day, how long we would be at each place, no communal introductions.

The vehicle we were in was not in the best shape. The top looked bolted on from another vehicle. Two other vehicles had broken down the day before. Did not seem like a put together company. Lunch was at Subway. Was not impressed as we were from out of town and would preferred to eat at a local place.

All in all, if you have your own car, drive yourself. We found no advantages from taking this tour except not having to deal with parking at national monuments. Overpriced and not worth it.

Hello - I am sorry you did not enjoy your tour with our company. I do apologize if you could not hear your guide during the tour, he is supposed to be using the PA when he deems it safe to use the hand mic, and he was in error if he didn't*. I know we got off on the wrong foot . . . the day of the tour you were upset with the guide for only allowing one hour stop at Mt Rushmore (as is stated in our TripAdvisor listing). From your review I believe there may have been several misconceptions about what Open-Top-Tours offers. (Introductions and Overview) "Our Mount Rushmore Monument and Crazy Horse Memorial for one hour each and then the top opens." ---- Unlike big bus tours we provide a more casual personalized tour and make sure to answer all questions asked (*and provide narration about attractions as we tour*). The tour information listed on TripAdvisor explains that Mt Rushmore and Crazy Horse are limited to one hour tour each (its already a 10 hr tour). After that we make stops at many other outdoor attractions, and the length of the stop depends on what wildlife are available for viewing and how many photos our guests want to take. We try to be flexible with our stops (within limits). (Vehicles and Safety) The vehicles we use are unique and for a reason, they all offer exceptional viewing for our Safari tours. All are inspected and maintained for safety and comfort (as stated two were in for repair). We use several convertible top vans with sliding tops. We also have "Moby" our one of a kind Safari style van with a Lexan (bullet proof) see through roof, removable side panels for unobstructed viewing and has individual leather reclining seats (with seat belts). It also has an aftermarket roof extension that allows our guests to (legally and safely) stand at any time during the tour for photo ops (as pictured in our TripAdvisor Safari photos). Moby was the Safari van you were on that day and you may have been expecting something more like a traditional standard van. (Lunch) As stated on our listing, "A picnic lunch is provided at Stockade Lake." We stop at a Subway so everyone may pick what they would want for the picnic. This is offered on our Standard tours, however any tour may be converted into a Private tour that would include eating at a local place. There was no tobacco used by our guide. He is recovering from surgery that sometimes affects his swallowing. He tries to be discreet whenever it is required to alleviate the problem. I'm sorry for this upsetting you. I appreciate your taking time to review your tour. Be Well - Rich To Our Future Guests: If during any of our tours you feel we are not providing what you want . . . please let the guide/driver know . . . (more AC or more heat, can't hear please speak louder, open top or close top, and although we frequently announce restrooms as we tour please let us know if we need to stop.) Thanks and Be Well - Rich

Absolutely breathtaking views! This is definitely the best way to see Mount Rushmore and the Black Hills. We had lunch at a beautiful lake that was so tranquil. My 10 year old son absolutely loved learning all the history at Mount Rushmore.

Reminder: bring your SPF! You will need a hat and lots of water in the summer.
Larry was our guide and he was a kind and gentle soul. He is an AMAZING driver!

As other reviewers have noted, he does speak softly and does spit into a cup. The PA system was used in the vehicle, however, you still may miss out on some of his knowledge.

However, I admire a person who although having health issues continues to provide a service to others. Larry knows this town like the back of his hand. And he's willing to impart this knowledge. Larry knew exactly where the bison were located in Custard State Park and we had the chance to park and watch a whole herd walk by us! So, if you are willing to give someone a chance to show their pride in their community and don't mind a little ptyalism...this trip is for you.

I can't say enough about this company. I talked to Rich on the phone before booking and he was a wealth of information. He booked a private tour for the 6 of us, picking us up at our hotel in one of the open top woody vehicles. My husband has health issues and traveled with a wheel chair and they were glad to accommodate that and make it a private tour. Jeff arrived at the hotel and spent a 9 hour day with us. It was wonderful to have a driver/guide/information specialist for the day. I must admit the heat began to make us wilt by late day but he put the top back on and AC. Our teen grandchildren loved the open and being able to stand up at times. Rich had sent me links to various routes we could do with stops on our other days.Cindy rode with us for her first day of work and was helpful to me. Thanks for a great day.

Thank you JR for your kind review. Jeff is good as a guide and is a great person . . . he is our first choice for any special needs tours. We are very happy that you and your family enjoyed your day. Our guests comfort is foremost and when things heat up or get too cool . . . we open/close the top and use AC/Heaters as needed to keep everyone comfortable. Thanks again for your review and I hope you will return someday. Be Well - Rich
